Googler123 Posted June 25, 2014 Report Share Posted June 25, 2014 Hey everyone, this is directed towards mostly packrats as myself, but if you have a suggestion don'thesitate to post. Here goes: I have and external hdd 2 TB bursting out the seams with games I'll probably never play and video I'll never watch. There are some rare stuff so I don't want to delete them just like that, though I've made some sacrifices lately. Mostly newer stuff I know I can get easely. Do you guys backup your data in the cloud? Do you do so with redundancy i.e. on multiple sites? Do you have any way of generating accounts to free online storage? Lastly would you consider this a wise approach to put your files like so with no local copy, even with redundancy? I know I should "just buy a new hard drive" and I probably will soon, but as there are many free storage options online I thought someone has found a way to "exploit" them so to say. undertehker Posted June 26, 2014 Report Share Posted June 26, 2014 (edited) I recommend buying another external hd as well.They are cheaper than buying blanks discs as far as I know (gigabyte per dollar wise). You could use a cloud thing but I don't recommend it. The reasons being corrupted files, site shutdowns, stuff getting deleted, etc. Are your games on steam or any other drm site that can be easily re-downloaded? If so, delete those. I too found that they're better than optical disks (cost wise, transfer speeds, space and other reasons). My external 2tb hdd is a seagate too, no problem with the brand on this end either. I asked this question because sometimes hdd s do fail, and a local copy can be lost, so an online backup is a +. I was thinking maybe you some of you avid downloaders might have online backup scheme to not need a hdd in the first place.But alas, the next paycheck is soon upon me, 2 more tb for the grinder . At 5$/ month unlimited backup I might be tempted to try it. However my concern would be I'd pass a 5 TB the first couple of weeks . I also thought about a hdd caddy for my laptop, but seems like too much of an investment regarding the benefits.Thanks for all your sugestions. Seems like a trusty hdd is still the answer. What is important to backup are things that cannot be replaced, such as personal photos, documents, videos and so on. Those files should not be too big, and Dropbox. Google drive, OneDrive and the highly reputable cloud storages should be sufficient for most cases. JimDaddy Posted June 27, 2014 Report Share Posted June 27, 2014 I have a 3TB (though I need to upgrade soon) for all my anime, then I have a portable 1TB I use for backing up my user folder on my laptop, any documents I don't use often enough to warrant having them on my laptop and then I also have about 95% of all the installers for the programs I have on my laptop plus others. I also have a couple other "spare" portables that come in at 640gb and 1TB. I have a couple other drives, but they are either in use, like my 250gb for my wii, or don't have enclosures, like a 120gb that just sits on one of my desk shelves. They way I look at is if an external hard drive fails then I am out of a shit load of anime and movies and it can take hundred of hours to download those episodes and movies, But if a data dvd is destroyed then I am only out anywhere from 12 to 26 episodes or 5-6 movies depending on quality. On the other side of that, you're spending a long time burning all that data to the discs. Especially if it is TBs of data. Add in to that that the data is unupdateable unless you get DVD-RWs which significantly increases the amount you'd have to spend for your backup plan. This isn't to say that the thought hasn't crossed my mind though. When my anime collection was only about 80GB I used the disc plan with my HDD plan. Now that it's nearing 3TB+, it's near unfeasible for me to have anything besides the HDD because of the cost associated with it. Cloud based storage would be ridiculous because my upload speed is only about 80kb/s and DVD-R couldn't work because I'm constantly updating TV rips to BD rips to Dual Audio BD Rips. I just couldn't take it if a 1TB hard drive died on me and i had all my Anime stored on it.
