Chapter 5: The Squad

Coach Persocom looked at the students gathered in the gym. The room was packed as 44 students were currently in it. Everyone was chatting so the gym was abuzz with noise. He looked at his watch. Just as he was about to speak, Danny waltzed in followed by Wren. Upon seeing him many conversations died down.

" Looks like he's got a reputation," said Koby, standing next to the coach. King walked in a couple of seconds later.

" Right let's do it," said Persocom to Koby. The captain nodded but was surprised when he saw King. Why's his face so red? wondered Koby. Oh well, I'll ask him later.

" OK!" boomed Persocom. His voice silenced everyone else's.

" Now," he continued. " The Kametsu Youth Football Association's new squad rules mean that out of 44 of you, only 18 can be selected." His announcement triggered fierce whispering in the crowd.

" QUIET!" shouted Persocom. The crowd again lapsed into silence.

" Now because of this I will pick 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 strikers," The crowd looked confused. " I will leave 3 spots as reserve," he explained. " Now here is the squad, Goalkeepers are Steve and Nero." Steve nodded casually but Nero gasped in surprise. " Defenders are Koby, Xander, Dennis, Yukito and Vandame," said the coach calmly.

" WHAT?!" exclaimed Danny in shock. The coach looked at him coldly.

" Is there a problem?" Danny bit his lip and shook his head.

" Good. Now midfielders are King, Rezin, Meglad, the currently injured John and Danny." No surprises there, thought Koby. " The attackers are, Iki and two freshmen, Leki and the first girl to ever represent us, Wren," Now the crowd looked shocked.

" A girl?!" shouted someone.

" Are you crazy?!" asked another. Danny stood up.

" Has anyone got a problem with that?!" he asked loudly. Everyone shut up.

" Good, well there is a friendly match between us and reigning champions East Kametsu High next week so training starts tommorow after school. Dismissed!" said Persocom finally.

Danny smiled at Wren but he was deeply angry inside. Why the hell is Vandame in the team? he thought to himself. Damn!

Chapter 6: Starting XI

Dennis walked down the corridor. So, there's five freshmen in the squad, he thought. He opened his classroom door and was confronted by Lelouch Kekashi. Dennis sighed.

" Dennis! You gonna win the cup this year right?!" babbled Lelouch. Everyone knew him. He was crazy about football but he sucked at it. This somehow meant he became the team's number 1 fan. Dennis spotted Steve, Xander and Meglad and smiled. At least the rest of class 2C was normal.

Koby entered his classroom and immediatey ducked as a book went whistling past his head. He sighed as he saw Vandame throw another one at him. He ducked again and leaped at the delinquent. Vandame barely dodged him and the bully swung his fist at Koby. The football captain evaded and grinned.

" That all you got Vandame the kicker?" he taunted. In response Vandame laughed manically.

" Lets see how you avoid my kicks!" The rest of the class looked fearful. All except Rezin who just slumped in his chair, wrapped in his own world. Suddenly Jay appeared in front of Koby.

" You guys should stop" he said.

" Move idiot!" yelled Vandame, flooring Jay with a visicous roundhouse kick. Koby arched his eyebrows in surprise. Looks like his kicks really are amazing, he thought. As Koby and Vandame squared up to each other again they both were halted by Reijou who stood between them with a baseball bat.

" Stop now," she commanded. Vandame grinned andreturned to his seat.

" Looks like your as sharp as ever, Koby" he said. Koby also grinned and returned to his seat.

" Your not half bad yourself," he said in reply. Reijou lowered the baseball bat and sighed.

" Why is class 2A so crazy?" she moaned aloud.

Indy walked into his classroom.

" Hey Indy," greeted Eve, the class president.

" Hey Eve," Indy smiled in return. He greeted Yukito and a tired looking Naomi.

" What's up Naomi?" he asked her.

" Reijou had us up for ages practising routines for the match." she moaned. Just then King strolled in.

" Hey guys," he greeted sullenly.

" What's wrong with you?" asked Indy.

" I just realised the teams gonna get picked today," he said.

" So? You're bound to be in," said Eve. Naomi nodded in agreement.

" Yeah! You're the best passer in the school," said Iki. King smiled.

" Thanks guys," he said and as he looked at their smiling faces he thought, man, 2B is the nicest class in school.

Danny and Wren walked to the clubroom. Danny was surprised to see everyone already there. When Vandame saw him, he sneered.

" Well looks like the great Danny has finally graced us with his presence" In response, the freshman shot him a black look.

" Cut it out," ordered Coach Persocom curtly. As silence fell, the coach said.

" Right now I will name the team to play in the upcoming friendly match." Everyone present leaned forward in anticipation.

" In goal, Steve. In defence, Koby, Xander, Dennis and Vandame" Yukiito nodded, hiding his disappointment at not being selected, whilst Nero just sat there overawed by it all. The coach continued.

" In midfield, King, Rezin, Meglad and Danny. King will play centrally with Rezin on the right and Meglad on the left, Danny will playmaker behind the two strikers. Finally, the two strikers shall be Wren and," the coach looked up. So Wren will partner me up front, thought Indy, interesting.

" Wren and Leki," said the coach calmly. All the players present turned to look at Indy, their faces holding expressions of shock.....

Chapter 5: Humiliation

Two days had past since the coach's surprise team selection. The match was in a couple of hours so Koby had called a team meeting at lunch.

" Thanks for coming guys," he greeted as he entered the clubroom. He was mildly surprised to see everyone present especially Vandame and Danny. Means they are serious, he thought to himself.

" Right everyone knows that East Kametsu are the very best. However I believe that if we give it a 110% we can beat them," he stated emphatically. Everyone nodded in agreement. King stood up.

" Yes! Koby's right!" he said. " Go Kametsu!" The squad all stood up and took up the cheer.

" Go Kametsu! Go Kametsu!" they all roared. Coach Persocom stood by the door and smiled. Good to see they are up for it, he thought, and good to see Indy's not taking it too hard.

Danny walked onto the pitch and was almost blown away by the surreal wall of sound that greeted him. Damn, East Kametsu Academy sure have some amazing fans, he thought. In response, Danny heard a huge roar go up from the Kametsu High fans. He smiled.

" I guess our fans aren't too bad either," he said to Wren. She nodded as Koby came back from the toss.

" We kick off," he said. Now Danny nodded. As the team huddled, Koby said.

" Remember, man-to-man we are better but all of their players are excellent passers and in Reishin and Lance they have 2 players who are already professional."

Wren and Leki stood over the ball. The referee blew his whistle, sinalling kick off. Wren passed it back to Danny who accelerated forward, past two players. He looked up and saw Rezin bursting down the right. Danny played a brilliant cross-field ball which was superbly controlled by the winger. Rezin saw Leki screaming for it but just as he was about to cross he was sent flying by a visicous tackle from Lance. Lance grinned and ran forward with the ball. Xander went to stop him. Suddenly Lance flicked the ball ahead and raced past a stunned Xander.

" What the-?!" gasped the defender. Lance continued his run. Koby frowned.

" He's too close to our penalty are. King go tackle him!" ordered the captain.

" NOW!" yelled Reishin, losing Koby whilst the defender was distracted. Lance played an inch perfect pass, exactly where Reishin wanted it. Dennis moved to stop the striker but Reishin nutmeged him and ran through on goal. The striker grinned and smashed the ball into the bottom corner. Steve barely had time to blink as the ball flew into the net. Not even 2 minutes had passed since the game started and East Kametsu were already ahead. A huge roar went up from their supporters.

" Damn!" cursed Koby. The rest of the Kametsu High team and their supporters looked stunned. Danny looked at Lance.

" You cheater!" he yelled at him. Lance grinned and squared up to Danny.

" What did you say?" asked the amused winger.

" You fouled Rezin," said Danny. The referee was there and pulled them apart.

" Stop now!" he ordered. " Or you'll both be yellow carded!" Both players backed off with Lance calling to his team loudly enough for Danny to hear,

" These guys are awful! Let's go for 10!" Danny swore in frustration.

" Come on guys, get it together!" shouted Reijou from the sidelines.

" It won't be that easy" said Coach Persocom to himself. " If we don't get it together we will humiliated,"
