Okay, so I'm in the middle of watching One Piece but I want to watch another anime on the side. Something ~13 episodes or shorter, something that has an actual ending (no sequels), preferably dubbed but it's not necessary, and definitely really, really... really.. really good. Emphasis on "really". Don't really care for the genre, but definitely keep the mecha and ecchi to a minimum.

HighSchool of the Dead. will blow your mind. it might have a sequel down the line. but if you want something to blow your mind this is it.

As will Phantom ~ Requiem for the Phantom. Though its 26 eps long not 13. has a clear cut ending. no sequals. lol

Blow your mind at how they ruined the show by completely disregarding any form of the story and going straight to fanservice including massive blobs of fatboobs that can jiggle fast enough to avoid speeding bullets. The manga was totally better as it focused more on the actual story and less on the insane retarded fanservice. Seriously the fanservice was not needed in this type of show. Episode 1 was epic, the rest was garbage.

Since you want something short... I'd recommend Angel Beats!, ef ~ a tale of memories, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, and if I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Aoi bungaku is a short series, 12 episodes, however it doesnt continue the same story throughout. It is the most mind blowing series ive seen. Its a heavy series to watch as opposed to the light-hearted one piece, thought u might want some balance

You're right about Highschool of the Dead. It was nice to watch a zombie anime, but the fanservice really ruined it for me. Shame, really, I think I'll stick to The Walking Dead instead lol

Lol the reason I didn't want a 26 episode anime is because I'll probably lose interest by the time I get to around episode 15, but I have heard good things of Phantom so I might check it out.

Ha, that guy on the image at the anidb site looks like Light from Death Note.. So, from the looks of it, it's basically a mix of a few stories. To be honest, it looks really interesting so I'll definitely check it out

I think Serial experiments lain might be right up your alley. Short series too.

Also the first GITS movie if you haven't seen it. Paranoia Agent was also fun, but not much of a mind-blower, just paranormal.

under 13 episodes, no sequel, and blow your mind. My first thought is Baccano, but serial experiments lain is a total mind fuk so I'll second that but I don't think its under 13 episodes, but I wouldn't remember that for sure. But if you want action and short, Baccano

oh, and on high school of the dead, I found the fanservice absolutely hilarious, when the bullet went between the two jiggling boobs going in directions that completely defy physics I literally rolled on the floor laughing and couldn't stop, if you don't take the fanservice seriously its some of the most hilarious I've seen, and I've seen a lot

Eden of the East is a short anime with a lot going on in it. It's an 11 episode series with 2 movies so essentially 13 episodes just like you wanted haha.

Also, check out Mushishi. It's a 26 episode anime so think of it as 2 x 13 episode anime series. It is extremely good, I'm sure most people would agree although I can't really put my finger on why it's so great but it is.

Sorry for late reply but Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle will blow you mind. Well not much for anime series but the two OVAs Tokyo Revolution and Spring Thunder. But of course you need to watch the anime series, it is still good to watch but a bit slow but worth it for the OVAs.
