Just an update on my own rig. My Tritton headset broke (this was my second, and they cost around 150-200 euro, so I'm hesitant about getting a new one, since the build quality is so crap), meaning I had no need for my sound card, so I took it out. I immediately noticed a dramatic change in temperatures. Since the sound card was literally and I do mean literally, wedged right next to the second GPU, that GPU had no room to exhaust air through its fan. It used to run around 65 degrees idle (idle meaning just running my secondary monitor @ 1080p, no games or anything). Just checked now, its idling at 51 degrees C (to compare, the top GPU is idling at 37 degrees). The difference in temps is of course because of my PSU, which is exhausting air towards the second GPU.

So I learned a valuable lesson. Leave room for an air-cooled GPU to exhaust air.

Alright I have a Dell Inspiron 580.

Intel Core i5 760 @2.80Ghz Quad-Core

6GB DDR3 RAM

1TB HDD ATI Radeon HD 5450 1GB

Dell 0C2KJT Motherboard

300 Watt Power Supply

Monitors:

Dell SP2309W 2048x1152

I recommend getting a new PSU, make sure its modular, that means you can plug in only the power cables you need. Also, make sure its 80+ certified. Go here to check http://www.plugloadsolutions.com/80PlusPowerSupplies.aspx

As for graphics cards, any graphics card from the Nvidia Geforce GTX 500 series or Radeon HD 5770 upwards will do for Arkham Asylum. I had a 5770 in my last computer and it played AA on medium settings, IIRC.

Yeah, as Rikuo said, you definitely need a new PSU. Your current GFX card by itself recommends a minimum PSU of like 350 watts iirc, which you do not meet.

Actually, she can run it just fine on a 300 Watt. My last computer was a HP Pavilion, it came with a 300W and a 5450, and it never gave me trouble.

I know my PC could NOT. I had to upgrade when I put in my 5450, and the official site for it, recommends 400+ watts:

With my 300 watt PSU, the PC failed to ever display anything via the 5450 card, period.

Got an older laptop from an uncle that wasn't being used and collecting dust. Wiped it fresh, installed Win XP, and took apart to clean in and out, etc.

Dell M60 Precision

  • Processor Intel Pentium M 735 / 600MHz / 1.7 GHz
  • Memory 2.0 GB (max)
  • Hard Drive 60.0 GB - 5400.0 rpm
  • Display Type TFT active matrix
  • Graphics Processor AGP 4x - NVIDIA Quadro FX Go700
  • Video Memory 128.0 MB

I do have an issue with it though, it's processor should do 1.7 GHz but it's always stuck at 600 MHz (Checking through CPU-Z and Speedfan applications). I've checked out Dell.com for latest drivers and fixes but it hasn't been effective. I've read on some forums that if the power adapter isn't recognized by the system (different power adapter that came with laptop) the laptop uses a different StepspeedTM. I've tried changing the power settings as well (Portable/laptop, home/desktop, Always on, etc). I've also checked out the BIOS as well and troubleshooted some stuff.

What I'll probably do next is try Win XP SP3, I have SP2 on it right now. I need to use XP for certain CAD programs so Win 7 is out of the question (although I really want to investigate with Win 7).

Any input is appreciated :byebye:

Pretty sure a 300 watt should be fine. The rig in my sig runs a 7750 just fine on 300 watts and my card is more powerful.

300 watt would not work on my PC with only a 5450 when I plug in 3 external hard drives.

On the Radeon website, they said that the 5450 requires at least a 350 watt PSU iirc.

EDIT: http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/ati-radeon-hd-5000/hd-5450-overview/pages/hd-5450-overview.aspx#3

^ It recommends at least a 400 watt.

As I said though, with my 300 watt PSU, my PC would not work with the 5450 if I plugged in 3 external drives.

So 300 might be enough for basic use, but it is definitely NOT enough to allow everything to run and still have any room for more.

Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop

Bought this laptop back in 2009, I think it was, from Dell (customized). Was the first laptop I didn't just go to Staples or Best Buy and buy from the store. Looking to upgrade probably some time next year and really my only reason for that is becuase of the video card and processor. Not a heavy gamer but the games I do tend to play seem to need a good graphic card (Batman Arkham series, Sims 3, Mass Effect Series, etc).

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8800 2.66GHz

Memory: 8.00 GB

Hard Drive: 500 GB (2 TB external hard drive for backup and 1.5 TB portable hard drive)

Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670

OS:Windows 7 Home Premium

Notebook cooler: Cooler Master NotePal U3 (I love this fan/cooler. It's supposed to be for up to a 19 inch laptop and comes with three fans that you can attach wherever you want on the stand. It is a bit bulky but keeps the laptop cool.)

Laptop (ASUS G75V)

CPU: i7 3610QM, 2.3GHz (not OCed, 8 threads)

RAM: 16GB 1600 MHz

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 670M

HDD: 1x 360GB SATA3 SSD, 1x750GB HDD

Screen: 17.3" LED LCD

Razer DeathAdder

Desktop (Old now, haha)

MOBO: Gigabyte EX58-UD5

CPU: Core i7 920, 2.2GHz (not OCed)

RAM: 6GB 1600 MHz

GPU: NVIDIA GTX 275

HDD: 1 x 64GB SSD, 3 x 2TB HDD

Monitor: 24" LED LCD

Razer Lycosa, Razer Deathadder, Sennheiser PC350 Headphones

Unsurprisingly, Windows rates my Agility 3 SSD as the highest scoring component in my laptop. It's sad SSDs are actually constricted by even the newer SATA standards.
