-Zero-
Sigh, college has left me only with my laptop. I had my rig, but I use only my laptop now.HP G6 seriesAMD A4 APU8 GB ram300 GB Hard drive15" HD ScreenThe only upgrades I've done were the increase to 8 GB ram (with a Corsair Vengeance module). I plan on installing a Vertex 4 512 GB SSD once summer break starts and prices have gone down further.Over the years I gave my Rig little upgrades but before returning to start my second year, my father and I decided to sell it. He's a gamer(can you believe THAT??!?) and he came up with the idea of making a "successor" rig. So yeah, we dished out the money and built it. Here are the previous specs comparing H.Y.P.E.R. to S.O.L.A.R.I.S.H.Y.P.E.RCase: Cooler Master HAF X Full TowerMotherboard: ASUS ROG Rampage III ExtremeCPU: Intel Core i7 980xMemory: G.Skill Ripjaws 24 GBStorage: 2 120 GB OCZ Vertex 3s in RAID, 6 Western Digital Black 1TB hard drivesGraphics: AMD Radeon HD 6950 in CrossfireDisplays: 3 Samsung displays in EyefinityS.O.L.A.R.I.SCase: Rosewill BLACKHAWK-ULTRA Super TowerMotherboard: EVGA Classified SR-X HPTXCPU: 2 Intel Xeon E5-2687W Octa-CoreMemory: G.Skill Ripjaws Z 64 GBStorage: 2 OCZ Vertex 4 512 GB SSDs in RAID, and 4 Seagate Barracuda 3 TB Hard Drives(so around 13 TB storage WITHOUT formatting)Graphics: 3 XFX Double D Radeon HD 7970 GHz editions in Tri-FireDisplays: 3 Dell Ultrasharp 30" in EyefinitySound: Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcardSpeakers: Logitech Z906 5.1 Surround Sound systemKeyboard: Mad Catz Cyborg S.T.R.I.K.E 7Mouse: Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T 9so we went ABSOLUTE OVERKILL on this system. Bear in mind that H.Y.P.E.R had not been given a massive upgrade since 2010, in fact, the only things that came and went were the GPUs and the memory, everything else I bought and left. Also, this rig is our Futureproof build, as in we won't be upgrading for 5 years or so. Both systems are watercooled and we did heavy tweaking to make everything fit(ie. the soundcard and the GPUs). Sadly, I don't have any pics up yet, with college classes and what not in the way. We sacrificed CPU overclocking for Multitasking, but man, it runs, no, it destroyed our previous build.....it's like comparing a snail to a tachyon....I kid you not!! I won't be able to play on it until summer so yeah.....sigh....again....Note: when I mean I can't play it, it's because my parents live elsewhere while I live in my Uncle's trailer home......at this moment he himself lives North from here and he didn't bother to sell his trailer house. I asked him if I could live there during my stay at the UofI, he said yes, so I live for free.....except not cause I work and pay bills and what not and with my ex breaking up with me, I miss my rig even more. I could've stayed in the dorms but NO, father said: "too much money".......and to think we paid over 10 GRAND to build S.O.L.A.R.I.S.....man, this is turning into a life story. I should send it over to the Mako Reactor to talk about how my father doesn't love me and what not...haha.... zx0
It just about plays 1080p mkv when hooked up to my tv. I think we got the laptop in 2009 so it's not ancient, but it does take a while to get the video started.
ZeroPenguins
Fair enough, thought you meant older like 2004ish or so. My old laptop barely plays 720p hahaha, it's a Pentium M 1.6GHz single core... Got it in 2005 for an all in one cheap price of $1700 hahaha
vcxz
Got an older laptop from an uncle that wasn't being used and collecting dust. Wiped it fresh, installed Win XP, and took apart to clean in and out, etc.Dell M60 PrecisionProcessor Intel Pentium M 735 / 600MHz / 1.7 GHzMemory 2.0 GB (max)Hard Drive 60.0 GB - 5400.0 rpmDisplay Type TFT active matrixGraphics Processor AGP 4x - NVIDIA Quadro FX Go700Video Memory 128.0 MBI do have an issue with it though, it's processor should do 1.7 GHz but it's always stuck at 600 MHz (Checking through CPU-Z and Speedfan applications). I've checked out Dell.com for latest drivers and fixes but it hasn't been effective. I've read on some forums that if the power adapter isn't recognized by the system (different power adapter that came with laptop) the laptop uses a different StepspeedTM. I've tried changing the power settings as well (Portable/laptop, home/desktop, Always on, etc). I've also checked out the BIOS as well and troubleshooted some stuff. What I'll probably do next is try Win XP SP3, I have SP2 on it right now. I need to use XP for certain CAD programs so Win 7 is out of the question (although I really want to investigate with Win 7).Any input is appreciated Fair enough, thought you meant older like 2004ish or so. My laptop spec wise for integrated GPU is utter crap, only 32MB IGP, I think its a mobility Radeon 7500 or something along those lines. Have you tried running up the CPU to 100% and see how the clock speeds increase? Try prime 95 http://www.mersenne.org/Then use CPU-Z and see if it bumps up to 1.7GHzGood luckEdit:If you're curious to what CPU I have it's a Dothan 725 2MB 400FSB Pentium M. Forgot to add spec wise everything is the same as your laptop apart from my shitty IGP and clocks speed. Neolux
I got the ASUS K42jc Laptop about 2 years ago, I would rather it's specs be higher, but it is alright for most games and it runs VMs just fine. I would rather have gotten a Desktop, but unfortunately I need to move my computer quite often. Here are the specs:Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce 310MProcessor: i5 RAM: 4GB
Marc05
so we went ABSOLUTE OVERKILL on this system. That's not an understatement. You have to be pretty damn wealthy or save up for a long time to build that kind of system. The most expensive thing in my computer is my video card (6990) and my liquid cooling.
