EvE Online ... yes, you have to pay.

Sci-Fi based mmorpg. Biggest single server game around. Thus, not as many players as wow, but better play nonetheless. Skill learning is real time based (aka you learn even when you're not online as long your account is active).

Downside: Very aggressive pvp aspect, very long skill tree's to become truly competitive, long list of bastards who've been around forever and love ganking noobs

Upside: Great graphics, can be very friendly if you find the right crowd/corp, user friendly, lots of options to play with

this man is correct. If you are looking for something different then you MUST play eve. It may be a pay by play game, but it has some of the most stunning visuals ever, epic gameplay and the scale at times is ridiculous.

Although, I do suggest you get in with a bigger corp if possible, as there is many hardcore players that like to chew noobs up for kicks' n' giggles. The game really does allow alot of freedom in orientation and internal fighting. I remember getting caught up in the Goonswarm fights....not pretty.

Only other reccomendation for the game is get as many friends as possible to play, "frigate packs" can take down bigger ships, but two or three noobs wont stand a chance.
