If you've read the title you'll know the basic parametres of what I am looking for.

What i'd really like is a good 'might vs magic' sort of story.

So yeah, any suggestions people of Kametsu?

also I don't want fag magic like harry potter:) (sorry potter fans but its true. wands and broomsticks are lame-ass)

Well, there's one I read a while back that I really liked. It's a stand alone book.

The name of the book is "Heroes of the Valley" by Jonathon Stroud, the guy who wrote the Bartimaeus Trilogy.

The book is really interesting in the sense that it pokes light humorous fun at the stereotypes used inmost fantasy books. The story and characters are so unconventional from most fantasies that it's a very good read.

I'd give it a 9/10.

I'll take a look into it.

I just finished The King Maker, King Breaker dualogy by Karen Walker. They were pretty bad, all talk and no action. Also the main character had the most god awful accent. I only read the second book as I thought it had be more action orientated....but I was wrong:(

If you haven't read them:

The Sword of Truth Series (Not really magic vs. magic but a very good and very long series)

Warrior + Witch (Two Separate Books) by Marie Brennan

I don't exactly remember what these were about, but I remember that I liked them so much I finished both in about 6 hours. Plan on re-reading them pretty soon.

The Circle Trilogy by Nora Roberts

This is more vampire than magic, but it does have magic in it and Nora Roberts is an excellent author.

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan

This is easily my favorite all magic series. Very adult, dark, bad things actually happen, etc... This one is in fact magic on magic, so I highly recommend this series.

Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist

Another one I don't really remember but I do remember that there was a lot of magic and that I liked it quite a bit.

The Magicians: A Novel by Lev Grossman

Another very adult all magic book. I personally didn't like it, just a little bit too "realistic" I guess. I just kind of took the magic out of magic by making it all sciencey and whatnot. Might be your cup of tea though.

Hmm, maybe House of Night? It's a series of books about Vampire Magic and stuff. My friend is currently reading them and she says that they are very mature books and that there is magical abilities and stuff that each character posesses.

House of Night books might be a little girly for the OP. The main character is female and while the overall story is pretty good there is a lot of twilightish teenage girly angst and stressing over boys and whatnot.

OP if you have any interest in vampire books:

Anything from Annie Rice (Queen of the Damned, The Vampire Lestat, The Tale of the Body Thief, etc...)

Vampire Academy Series (Female main character and it gets pretty girly at times but shes a sarcastic baddass that likes picking fights and pissing people off so it makes up for it)

Vampire Beach Series (Male main character in high school, pretty funny series)

Evernight Series (Female main character, less girly than House of Night and a little bit more than Vampire Academy, but a great story with very good writing)

Morganville Vampires (Mainly focuses on a female but several male main characters as well. Not too girly, overall a pretty good series)

And the last I can think of that wouldn't be too girly would be the books that True Blood is based on. I don't remember what the series is called but searching True Blood in amazon would make the book series pop up. They follow a female character but I don't remember there being much if any girly stuff.

Edit: Forgot about a series I meant to mention in my last post:

It's actually quite a few separate series that are all part of the same story (I don't know why they couldn't just make it one long series).

The first series is The Dark Elf Trilogy, the second one is The Icewind Dale Trilogy, and I can never keep straight after those two which one comes next. The author is R.A. Salvatore and the books are amazing. I personally never get past the 3rd trilogy because I find that the fighting just gets repetetive but there is a lot of magic. The main character mainly fights with dual swords but he has a little magic of his own and there are standard mages and sorcerers and whatnot in the story. Just don't do what I did and buy all of the ones currently out at one time to find you can never read through all of them =P.

I would suggest these series:

-The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay

-The Dragonbone Chair, The Stone of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams

-The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

Also, the authors I listed themselves have countless other works I've enjoyed. These are just some obscure books I wanted to make sure I shared. lol

Some other authors I'd suggest are: R.A. Salvatore, Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin (obvs), Neil Gaiman (obvs), and Piers Anthony.

if you want something very deep and complex, the Wheel of Time series (starts with The Eye of the World) by Robert Jordan is as good as it gets, unfortunately he died before ending it, but the books are about 800 pages in length so for 10 books it'll last you a while.

If you want a lot of action with decent plot, but mostly action, the Drizz't Do Urden books by R.A. Salvatore are pretty decent.

If you want good all around fantasy then the Obsidian trilogy by Mercades Lacky (excellent author, does a few other series, leans towards machiavelian villains and uses a lot of grey areas) and James Mallory is very good, also the Farseer Chronicles by Robin Hobb (starts with Assassins Apprentice) is an excellent read, a bit more politics than action and the fantasy elements are very subtle and toned down, also the Green Rider series by Kristen Britain is a good read, starts with Green Rider so its easy to find, but its not finished.

If you want to laugh your ass off then the disc world books by Terry Pratchette are excellent, and you can start just about anywhere in the series, they tend to be a short read.

The Anita Blake Vampire hunter series by Laura K. Hamilton is good but goes down hill after book 4, about sociopathic vampires, lots of blood, sadism, and just F'd up characters.... until it becomes a cheesy porno around book 9 if memory serves.

The best fantasy books in my opinion are by Neil Gaiman, Stardust I think is the best and pay no mind to the movie as it got just about everything wrong, the first 3 times I read the book I did so in one sitting and its not exactly short, it starts slow but its hard to put down after ch. 4. Neverwhere is the next big one and its more on the darker side.

I can recommend more, but I think that's the best of what I have to offer

thanks for all the help so far!

^I've always been tempted to read terry pratchet but it always seemd that the book I picked up was volume265 of the disc world so-on-and-so-forth. So put off reading them. But may take a look into it now.

I will take a good look at the other recommendations made by everyone!

Aww, there is some similar thread and i tried to find it to copy my answer from there lol. Sigh

Definitely agree there.

-The Dragonbone Chair, The Stone of Farewell, and To Green Angel Tower by Tad Williams

-The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb

Robert Jordan, George R.R. Martin (obvs)

And there... especially books from Robert Jordan, his awesomeness is unsurpassed.

if you want something very deep and complex, the Wheel of Time series (starts with The Eye of the World) by Robert Jordan is as good as it gets, unfortunately he died before ending it, but the books are about 800 pages in length so for 10 books it'll last you a while.

*cries* True, but i heard he left lots of sketches and that his wife and another person will be the ones to finish it. Good thing that his wife helped him with his others books as well so the last one wont be ruined completely hopefully.
