I thought it was for people like us?

Lately, I have realised a lot of things about anime. As it progresses, it is becoming more violent, and things like that. Just the other day, Iw as watching... I think it was SBS, and it showed an anime episode. Dunno what it was called. But some guys on motorbikes kidnapped a girl and decided to rip her entire t-shirt off in front of her boyfriend. It was horrible. What are your views on this? I thought anime was for people like you and me, calm, relaxing and enjoyable. I don't see how these actions in an episode are enjoyable to watch. I always thought anime was more enjoyable with more fighting and drama and love triangles. I definetly don't prefer this type of anime I see at the moment.

What is SBS? Like anything else Anime has a lot of different themes/genres. If you don't like shows like that then watch something else. There is plenty of Anime to choose from. It's not something new. Anime like that has existed for a very long time.

SBS is an Australian TV channel.

Anime, much like any other movies or TV shows, have different genres, some action, or horror, or slice of life, etc.

Believe it or not, what you described in this particular anime, can and does happen. It just hasn't been seen in your life, but it can happen, which is what I love about anime.

Not everything is slice of life, butterflies and rainbows. As Koby said, if you don't like that type of anime, then simply don't watch it. If all anime was the same, then it would be repetitive.

I believe it appeals to what people call suspension of disbelief,(not sure if that's the correct term) We may not like something or find something plausible in real life but we can justify it in a work of fiction as it contributes to a good story, hence we find it enjoyable, that show you were talking about I believe it was Akira actually has a pretty good story based on the themes of sex, drugs, violence etc, so stuff like that would be justified.

Also we can't always have stories about the classic, guy fights, saves girl/world, learns a moral lesson in which nothing too extreme happens to anyone scenario since that, unless you're some kind of prude, would get very boring.

As Koby said, not everything will fit your tastes, you like hotdogs plain, I like them with ketchup and massive amounts of gore and breasts, that still doesn't stop you from having your plain hotdogs at the end of the day.

That is a very good quote, nice one. I will have to use that one day lol.

the anime you're talking about is Akira, it's a movie. At least it's likely, i remember a scene like that there. Akira is really an impressive work and remains such throughout years, it was released decades ago if i remember right. And yes, stuff like that happens in real life, no one said anime is supposed to only depict the good side of everything, i think that if the scene caused such a reaction in you (disgust), then it was bloody well done.

Yeah, what Shade said.

Lol, though you might say that you find it disgusting, Akira was a landmark in animation history and is one of the best things to come out of the industry.

It was a real surprise for me to see something like that as well, but I enjoyed it because it was different and it showed the skewed view of life, the one that really exists. The only other anime I've seen that's similar in that sense is Death Note.

And if people don't like all the bloody violence, they can always watch the censored version but I prefer to watch everything as it was intended - Untouched by black markers and Scene-cutters.

I kinda agree with what idl12 said. There's all kinds of people, each with their own interests. I bet there's a ton of anime you watch that I'd completely dislike, and ones I like that you don't at all. This isn't wrong or a bad thing. It's simply prefrence and what makes us all unique. Do you understand now, ilovezerokiryu?

:) Now, after all the replies, I understand one thing: Most of you all have a different point of view about anime, and I guess it is up to you and you only to choose the animes you love and want to watch. And yes, I am agreed with Arvo92 on the quote! :P

There are a lot of things that people consider to be just fantasies but actually exist in our society...... you havent just experienced such things (neither have I we are lucky) but people would like to use it to make their manga/anime more realistic while some may use it just for fanservice..... if you dont like it turn a blind eye to it but thats kinda impossible because not all anime are goodygoody and thats what makes them so interesting.... and one last piece of advise you better stay away from hentai if even such mild scenes make you sad/disgusted

I kinda tried to put a lot of crap into just one post so if you don't understand it then its just fine

A general rule of thumb is that most anime isn't really for children. If you want to watch kiddie stuff, then don't complain about the things big kids want to watch. Most anime is breats, pantyshots, and gore. With liberal amounts of sexual innuendo. That's just what anime is these days.

I believe the anime your talking about may be Akira.Yes that scene is quite disgusting and violent, but it does have a reason.

The character who sees his girlfreind get her shirt ripped off and then subsequently punched in the face is named Tetsuo. One of the main themes throughout Akira is that Tetsuo suffers from an inferiority complex, which means that he feels inadequate and feels like as though he is below everyone else and that everyone is better than him. This is further emphasized throughout the film by the fact that in several scenes (including after the scene you are reffering to) he is needed to be rescued by his best friend Kaneda.

My theory is that the purpose of that scene was that it was the scene which proved to be the last straw for Tetsuo. His girlfriend is being assualted by a gang of rival bikers, who are also about to destory Kaneda's bike and all the while Tetsuo is helpless and is unable to do anything about it.Then Kaneda and some more of Tetsuo's freinds arrive and save him and his girlfreind. It is at that moment that Tetsuo becomes convinced that he is completely inferior to everyone as he constantly has to rely on others (prodominently Kaneda) to help him and is incable of doing anything himself.

I've seen Akira, its old and violent along those lines, so yes those types of anime have existed for a long time. These types of anime are not my cup of tea either. I like when anime get dark but when it goes overboard or gets unnecessarily cruel I tune out.

SBS in Aus deals with movies and other things world wide, you can get Italian, Japanese, Greek anything you want on there if they show it.

Anime has a wide range of 'types' but I am guessing what you saw was not what the U.S class as "main-stream" ie: Naruto, bleach, Inuyasha ect.

Most people know only of the main-stream anime, so they are rather shocked to find there are things like what you saw, 3x3 eyes, the orig Ninja Scroll movie... Sorry Yuri xD

Uh you can't really. XD That'd be like me saying that I didn't think that western cartoons are all alike. Anime is just the Japanese term for cartoon. There are five million + genres. I'm not going to watch a kid's anime expecting deep plots, and I'm not going to expect soft, sweet love and lots of drama from a mecha anime.
