Online Game Connection Issues

Hi one and all,

Lately, well for the past 2 months I have been having issues with an online game I am playing. The online game is Star Wars: The Old Republic. now the issues I am having has got me baffled and I don't know what to do (I have been spending 2 months trying to fix it.

My Issue at first sounds like a simple one but gets quite complicated so lets begin:

Issue:

When I connect to the game I get 1 - 2 minutes of game play before the game's ping goes from 200's to above the 100's and continues to rise. The reason for this is due to my modem losing it's internet connection. Now for the fun part, out of 3 in my house I am the only one that does this to the modem when we play SWTOR.

It does not matter if I am the only one playing or if all 3 of us play I will disconnect the modem when I start to play. I have called my ISP and they tell me everything is fine with my line connection though they can see internet drop outs. I have changed over the modem filter, replaced the modem itself with a better newer modem and also done a full factory re-set on my laptop and it still doesn't work.

Things I have tried but with no luck:

- Ethernet Cable

- USB Wifi Adaptor

- Updating Drivers

- Rolling back Driver

- Disabling QoS

- Creating extra firewall outbound and inbound rules

- Buying a New Modem

- Calling ISP

- Changing Modem filter

- Lowering in-game graphics and anything else that will make the game use more internet data.

- Re-setting my laptop back to factory settings (Deleting everything and starting fresh, you can imagine how annoyed I was when this didn't work. I have backed up all my data though on External HDD's)

There is probably more but it has been ages since I done most of this. Do you guys have any suggestions? Know of any good modems that work great for gaming?

I have created two other threads on other sites should you want to read up on what I have tried and also error reports etc:

My post from swtor:

I am having an issue when I join swtor. When I join a game I only stay in the game for a short amount of time before I get kicked due to a bad internet connection. But wait! here is the thing, I do not have a bad internet connection and I am the only one out of three people who play swtor that has these connection issues when I join.

To add to my trouble the reason I get disconnected is when I join my modem seems to freak out and disconnects from the internet (sort of like restarting the modem), disconnecting everyone in my house from the internet until it restarts.

The other two people in my house play the game just fine until I join, this error only happens when I join the game. They also don't have to be playing for it to happen, I have tried to play without them on the internet and I get the same issue with me joining and getting kicked due to connection errors (due to my modem restarting.) This only happens to me and I have no clue why, I have been able to play swtor in the past on this computer and this modem, but after a few months of not playing I am now having issues.

If you need any more information please let me know.

My post from whirlpool:

Hi,

I have an unusual problem, well to me anyway. I have a TG782T modem that works fine majority of the time. But lately I have been trying to play this one online game (Star Wars: The Old Republic) which I have played in the past on this modem without error (months ago).

I have moved into a new house since the last time I played it without error but now when I play this online game I only get a few seconds/few minutes of game play before my DSL and Internet lights turn off, the modem power light stays on.

Now here is the odd bit, I am one of three people who use wifi with this modem to play this online game, they are able to play just fine no issues at all but the moment I join whether it is by myself or while they are playing, the internet will drop out.

I should also note that I have recently played this game at my parents place who are with the same ISP but have a newer modem. (I don't know what type it is) I can play on that modem without any issues, it is just my modem that seems to be giving me issues and as I said I am the only one out of 3 that have this issue with the modem. We are all pretty much the 2 mtrs away from the modem when we play and I am the closest one to it.

I created another topic on the games main site thinking it was a game error, obviously I didn't find any solutions but if you want to see what was suggested and what I tried then here is the link:

When your 'modem' crashes, how are you connected to it? Are you connected by cable or are you connected wirelessly?

If your 'modem' crashes for both cable and wireless connections, it is probably a 'modem'/'modem' config problem.

WiFi most of the time but I have tried cable to, same error. Would a config problem affect one laptop though? I am the only one out of 3 people that have this drama.

Just read through your other threads... I assume you have tried resetting your modem to factory settings.

Also... Does this only happen for SWTOR? It doesn't happen when you're downloading/uploading/download+uploading ?

I have read through my other threads and done pretty much everything suggested to the best of my ability. Yeah I have had two modems, both give the same result, I reset my first modem to factory settings and the new one should pretty much go without saying.

This issue only occurs when playing SWTOR though only recently I have been getting disconnected from the internet for no reason (This has been happening only for the past two weeks). Last couple of days I have been getting IP issues saying someone else on the network has the same IP as me and I can't connect, this is sometimes an easy fix as I have to wait for a couple of minutes.

Other times though my laptop has trouble finding my modem, everyone else has internet but my laptop says there's no internet and that it has trouble connecting to the modem, this is for both WiFi and Ethernet cable. I will have a more of a play around with the modem after work.

Welp, you've tried everything short of switching modem/router brands (and using a USB wifi adapter)... Google returned this.

Changing the wireless mode should be pretty straight forward.

The guy then mentions 'Enable Strict UDP', which, for me, can be changed under my firewall settings (it's not displayed as an option, but I know it is part of the 'DenyAll' level of blockage). You might need to download and read your modem/router's config to find it.

A couple of posts down, another guy mentions changing the MTU size worked... I doubt that it would help with your problem, so I wouldn't bother. If your upstream MTU size is already 1492, then leave it as is.

I double check your router and make sure you have no intruders. There is a technique that kicks a user off via wireless connection to grab a negotiation packet that holds some information that can be used to get on the network. So I would double check all users on the router.

Fixing the MTU won't do much than possibly fixing buffer issues via UDP mostly. So if anything lowering it could solve buffer issues, but not all the time.

Also if you could post your computer specs (especially networking nics) and additonal software like antivirus/security/malware/ip blocking software that would be useful as well.

A software called Wireshark should be able to tell you if there's outsiders using your net connection if I remember correctly. It should be able to show you almost anything you want about your LAN.

Sorry for the late reply was testing something new and it seemed to work but didn't wanna post back saying it worked to early. So far from what I am seeing it seems my laptop charger was to blame, I read that terrible chargers can cause hardware issues on your laptop causing internet connection issues. Since swapping out for a new one, I am yet to have any online drop outs expect for the odd one to three a day at most on a bad day.

Cheers for your help and assistance guys, I hope you can understand when I say hopefully I won't need to come back to this thread for further help.

Once again thanks!

I don't see how a laptop charger can cause a modem/router to lose it's connection, but whatever works for you i guess >_>

I got the idea to try it when someone else had similar issues to me and also swapped out there old charger for a new one with good results. It is beyond me but hey it works for now i guess.

I can see that happening, since laptops "need" a certain amount of power. And most laptop chargers are somewhat computerized themselves for safety purposes.

His problem was the that the whole modem/router would disconnect, not just the laptop.

The only way I see this happening is if you are connecting the laptop and modem/router to the same power outlet. Of course, if others know more, please correct me.

Thats the thing, the laptop was acting up due to poor voltage from the charger. If the charger isn't providing the correct power, the laptop power distributor would cause power interruptions to other pieces of hardware on the laptop.

@ Java: What John is saying is that my connection issue wasn't just laptop based, it cause my modem/router to disconnect from the internet affecting everyone one the internet and not just me. Though I was the only one that could drop the internet out like that while playing SWTOR.

@John: They where as my laptop charger cord wasn't long enough to go to any other outlet, when I swapped for the first time to a new charger it was plugged into another power point. But now I run it back in the same outlet I had issues with and I still have minimal issues, so maybe that type of charger didn't work well with the outlet that it shared with another laptop and the modem/router.
