I have spent about a year away from watching anime's (that i had not watched once already anyway) and exploring all the good ones out there.

Was wondering if you guys could rattle off an essential list that I should take the time to watch.

I have seen the likes of:

Afro Samurai

Trigun

and probably more that I cant remember right this second.

Now onto your topic, some of the greatest animes I have watched are in your list so I think recommending some of the ones I have watched and enjoyed will more than satisfy you.

Naruto & Naruto Shippuden: This is an anime I am currently watching and I really enjoy and in a way is like DBZ and One Piece, due to it size in episodes and action. It truly is a great show

Gurren Lagann: I stumbled across this anime while looking for epic animes and I must say that this one was not a let down, though to watch it you had better be ready for change, kinda like the changes in the story in death note.

Bleach: This animes is also like naruto, one piece and DBZ, well in my opinion anyway

and lastly Phantom: Requiem for the phantom is a great anime about assasin's

First off, are you wanting a particular genre or are you just wanting to know the big hitters?
