Hey i was just wandering how do people get caught downloading copyright material and is there a way to help prevent you getting caught? (other than download less) See I live in the UK and currently have a 40GB download limit now i assume that if i was downloading 40gigs monthly then questions may begin to be asked. I'm just wandering to you tech guys out there what would be a safe amount to download monthly? and how much do you guys and girls download especially if you are from the UK?

As far as I know I don't have any monthly cap and I don't worry too much about it. I download what I want and when I want it. About the only thing I've ever been cautious of is certain things like Hollywood movies via torrents. I no longer get them through torrents since many companies can easily monitor and grab IP addresses from them. As far as downloads through MegaUpload etc.. only you and MegaUpload know what you are getting and no one else can spy in on you unless your ISP is secretly spying on you (if that was the case, you'd be doomed either way, but as far as I know here in the states they aren't allowed to do that... yet anyways).

My internet provider started monitoring me when I use to torrent download. They'd send me emails stating that if i don't stop my illegal activity they would suspend my account. I stop downloading via torrent and sites like what Koby has mentioned (besides it's way faster for this way). Mind you when I upload pictures to Costco, they sent it to me again, so I replied them a vicious email back. I haven't heard from them since.

Over here, my internet providers don't really care about WHAT i'm doing with my internet speed.

I don't think they have a right to care either. They're getting their monthly bills paid. What do they care if i'm using the speed to get anime or for forensic research.

And yeah, I download what I want, when I want. If they ever phoned me to tell me to stop downloading, I'll tell them to screw themselves and get another one of the thousand or so internet providers.

The 40GB limit is pretty standard in the UK. They will only hassle you to upgrade to a more expensive package if you reach the limit.

A lot of ISPs also use traffic shaping to limit speeds of torrents, thats why I just use sites like MU now.

If you're downloading torrents, one good program to use is Peerblock. You can select lists of "bad IPs" that you want to block to prevent others from tracking you. Some people swear by it and others say it's useless. In my opinion, it cannot hurt, so I have it running when I'm doing torrents.

I live in the UK and I have unlimited download limit package. But when I got a bit paranoid on this I decided to read up the terms and conditions of my ISP they said that if my downloading was unusually high then they would end up monitoring what I was downloading, so I thought I would test them. It's been about a year and a half and I haven't heard anything negative from them, no price increase, no suspending of my account, no warnings and I download about 40-80GB a month =).

Well, the copyright laws in US and UK are a lot stricter than here in India. But regardless, if you wanna download torrents, download them from private Torrent sites like IPT or sumthing like that and not Piratebay and the likes. Moreover the ppl who were caught for copyright infringements were using software like Limewire or Kazaa. I know ppl in UK who use seedboxes to download stuff from trackers and then to their PC's, which could a good idea if you are really looking for privacy.

Yeah, how dare you take advantage of the "unlimited downloading" that they advertise. Sheesh, if that had been me and I could afford a solicitor, I would have taken them to court for false advertising. That's what is, you first say "unlimited" and then in your terms and conditions, it turns out to mean the complete opposite.

For me where I live they've only given me a phone call about torrents once and guess what I did afterwards nothing, I continued to download as I please with no hassle. If I can't find it on direct download sites then I hit torrents but Like Renzourin said torrents are faster but allot of lechers don't like to seed so it's always second option.

I've read my T&C and it mentions nothing about not allowed to download torrents or anything like that, just only thing I have to be worried about is they say they are allowed to change their T&C as they see fit. Usually they would cut me off if I'm using to much bandwidth but I went for the uncapped unshaped package so it doesn't matter to me in the end as long as these rippers don't mess with my natural cycle.

Yeah I'm not too bothered about it though because when they say usually high they probably mean something like 300+GB a month so I should be fine. The thing that annoyed me was the way they advertise their download speeds with Megabits instead of Megabytes, only just learnt that a few days ago, and I thought I was well under my promised speeds. But 1.2MB/s = 10Mb/s so I have been fooled once again by my provider =).

Hehe, I know quite a few people who were a little po'd when they found out providers were advertising in Mb instead of MB. Anyway, like one guy said I always run peerblock when I do download torrents. It makes me feel a little better, but I try to stick with direct downloads.

Does peer block actually work, I've hard quite a few people say it doesn't work never tried it myself.

No, peerblock is only used by idiots who are fooled into a false sense of security. It does absolutely nothing.

Think about it. How does torrents download? It connects to people in the swarm. Meaning if you're connected to them it has to be sending data back and forth, thus how it downloads. Well if it's sending data back and forth it must know where that data has to be sent to and from right? Well that means it can be traced. Sorry guys but no matter how you try to cover or hide yourself it does absolutely no good to someone who knows how to look.
