mavrik
So I'm still looking for a good host for my anime series, but before I actually start uploading I wanted to find out if anyone has any issues with M4V files or prefer MKV files. Since I stream all of my videos through iTunes to the AppleTV's in my house I've been converting my files to M4V files with all the iTunes Metadata as well and wanted to know if people would want those files or if they prefer the original MKV files instead. The M4V files are still Dual Audio and have subtitles, and you would be able to just drop them right into your iTunes TV Show as well.
Tanis
I prefer MKV myself. But I'm so used to people using things like AVI/OGG/etc, that I just use MKVmerge to 'fix' them.
Cyrus
MKV for me. I just use MKVmerge to 'fix' them. Same here
lemmingllama
MKV is a better file type overall. However, why not just upload both and let people decide which they want?
mavrik
MKV is a better file type overall. However, why not just upload both and let people decide which they want? Well I would prefer to just upload one format and not spend the time (and bandwidth and space) uploading files to a host that aren't going to be touched if no one wants them. I'll just stick with MVK since it looks like that's what everyone else prefers.
ElementalCards
AVI was popular and well utilized back in the day. MKV replaced AVI as the preferred format, so go for that. Edited February 21, 2014 by ElementalCards
Tsukumo Yuma
I prefer MP4.
StaticX
Definitely MKV, Why would anyone else use MP4/M4V? Besides, If you encode them with the right Level limit and Reference Frames, You can just mux them into MP4/M4V files (e.g. 1080p = High Level 4, 4-5 Reference Frames)
D.Knight
Go for the MKV. Definitely the most preferred format.
ezikialrage
As long as the file size is not ginormous I really do not have a preference.
aMvEL
I'm guessing the perferred format generally is mkv, but everyone has different use cases for their videos.Regardless which container you decide to release in, it's extremely easy to remux into both mkv and mp4 with their respective muxers (mkvtoolnix, mp4box, ffmpeg, etc.etc.)
Moodkiller
Definitely MKV format! You could also start a poll on this topic, list the different file types, and let people vote. That would give you a very clear indication But at the moment it looks like MKV is the way to go - Happy uploading! P.s. What file host are you looking at using? mavrik
Thanks everyone for the replies, looks like MKV is the format to stick with. Just for a side note as well, I don't do any encoding myself (don't know if any of you thought I was doing any of the encoding) and for the M4V files I just use Subler to repackage them (not re-encode) so I can play them on my AppleTV and other devices. I haven't found a host yet that I like, I'm going to look at the hosts that other uploaders here are using and then just pick one that is more commonly used and then probably start uploading Good Luck Girl (just got it today from CBM and it looks pretty good).
Moodkiller
Sounds good - looking forward to it To give you a quick insight, the common and popular hosts here are Uptobox, 1fichier, davvas and mega. I would highly recommend using any of those Edited February 24, 2014 by Moodkiller

lemmingllama
h265 is usable ? It is, but it should only really be used on mini-mkv's right now. Give it a couple years and it should beat out h264.
