Is the "No Used Games" policy true about the 3rd Gen consoles true?!

Actually. "EA" has been doing it since Battlefield 2? Online Multiplayer Passes? Yeah. Been that way for a long time. Sad thing is people won't stand up against it, they just kind of sit there and take it; paying the $5-$15 to get an online pass after buying it used. Why the !@#$ should I need to pay for a game again to enjoy all of it? I'm the consumer, I purposely bought it used because that was the price I could afford. If they threw in a crap ton of freebies to make it seem worthwhile for $60, I'd go in; but sometimes it's not worth it - is what I'm arguing. Seriously, quality of games these days are dropping because developers are too busy thinking of ways to milk as much money out of their games as they can.

I actually had to call tech support and screw them over to get a free online pass for Battlefield 2. Yes it was wrong of me to do something that I wasn't entitled to, but hell - a lot of people could've done this and got away with it. (The Indian Tech Support Guy just typed my name somewhere and gave me online access even though it was my brother who used the code before me.)

i am unsure about xbox and nintendo (cause i havent looked) but i know Sony is trying hard to push this matter because their tired of seeing sales on new games going down since people just trade in their games and others buy them because of the cheaper price so Sony is trying to pass the ability to label the games with codes that once your console reads it thats it no other console will be able to use it much like redeem codes once used thats it

and if sony has their way this will be passed very soon -_- i mean look at the whole bricking problem with their ps3's i STILL havent updated my ps3 in 2 years because i rather like being able to play movies and games on it and not have a dusty door stop (their have been class action lawsuits against them because of this and sony has won each time they have gone to court so sony has pretty much said F*** the fans because they know we'll keep paying)

so yes i truly believe if given the slightest chance this will happen because sony dont care about their fans one little bit

p.s go ahead and send me messages or do it on here about how im wrong because i dont really care thats how things are and im sure this will happen if their given any chance of passing it at all

Never realised that EA had it in place for battlefield 2, I never came across it... excuse my ignorance. I must say though, while the principle for them is sound (that they don't gain profit from second hand sales) the ethics is questionable. The second hand game market is very small compared to the first hand sales, even accounting for all the games bought outside of shops like GAME and Gamestop. I know a lot of people (myself included) that does not like buying second hand, yet will not sell games to buy new ones should they want them.

Bring back the days when a new game costed 30 maybe 40 euro, back when ps2 reigned supreme. It pisses me off that the console makers decided "new generation, new prices!" just cause they had a 3 or 360 on the console dashboard. Look at the Wii. I don't know if it is the same everywhere but here in Spain Wii games cost the same as a PS2 or Gamecube game cost so many years ago... and it is the biggest bloody seller. You'd think Sony and Microsoft would get their heads out their asses and realise why. But meh, until something like the whole SOPA incident comes about, where everybody voices opinion, then I doubt they'll change their ways.

I actually don't see Sony going that far, like in the first paragraph. Instead, I see them just having a code included with the game for a pass to use it and if you don't have the code, such as a used copy, that you would download a pass for $9.99 like they are starting to do now. This is actually their best option for making some money off of used sales, since they currently make $0.00 off of used game sales and still deserve their dues for making the games. The developer, though, gets the majority of the money from the pass. This would probably become mandatory for even single player games, which is fine, since I think the developers still deserve some money on a used sale, though the people selling the game used would have to adjust the price accordingly in order to sell it.

Also, I think the topic title should be changed. This is actually the seventh generation of gaming coming up with the next consoles. The PS4, next XBOX and WII U are seventh generation gaming consoles, since the PS3, X360, and Wii are the sixth generation gaming consoles.

I bought BF3 for £20 second hand and thought what a bargain!

Went online. "please enter your online pass code."

had to buy 1000 fucking microsoft points (because they only let you buy them in 500, 1000 etc)

Then it turns out I'm missing half the online content because I don't have the 'back to karkand' dlc for 1200 micro points.

Consoles need some sort of regulatory board to stop this kind of extortion. I remember when they used to give you things for free on XBLM:( or was 800MSP at the highest, not 1200 for everything. Next stop 1600:(

NO both microsoft and sony have stated that there will be no lockouts for used discs

For one thing, such things have already been happening.

Another thing, neither of those companies said anything to the effect. They simply stated their next consoles would have disc drives. -_- There is already games on the current consoles with lockouts on used discs as several people have pointed out.

Not only would such a move kill Gamestop and whatever other companies like it are still around, but it would also kill Gamefly and any other rental company. These companies buy new games as well as used, so such a move if it were to happen would actually cause them to lose money.

Killing Gamestop is kind of the point. Game companies make nothing from used sells from these places, yet these stores make billions a year in used game sales. Game companies want to try and force gamers to buy new whenever possible.

This is very true. The Game Companies are doing this so they can get their dues, as well, since they gain nothing from used sales. It is also understandable, because if they don't get money, they can't continue making games. Getting rid of ways to buy used, though, isn't that good of an idea. Requiring you to have to pay for an online pass on a used game is a way for them to get some of the money back also, but only if the person ever wants to play online. That is also where DLC comes in. It is there to provide even more income for the developers. I am perfectly fine with this current system, personally, since they do deserve to make money, in some way, off of their own products.

That's probably THE most obnoxious thing they could possibly do, require a consistent internet connection to even operate the console? Completely bull. That's like saying I can't use my laptop to do anything unless I have a hard wire connection or even a WiFi signal; which is false. I can still play games on my laptop, write essays, and look at previously downloaded materials.

Great point. Any most providers nowadays in the US are starting to limit data usage, like ATT and COX. That would send our usage through the roof, just like having background data on, on our smartphones.

If this is confirmed to happen by sony and microsoft, I'm done buying their consoles like alot of other folks here have said. I've thought about spending my money less on video games, and this would be the perfect incentive for people like me. Games are already too expensive as is for about 60$.

There was an article in the latest Game Informer (take with grain of salt because Gamestop, the biggest profiteer of used games, owns the magazine) about how it's unlikely it will happen.

The backlash would be too great unless they completely did away with disks (my opinion).

No you guys shouldn't worry they would never blocked used sales. Used sales arent bad for the industry on the contrary they allow more people a game a try and if they like it they can buy other games from the devs and wat not. The reason for this fuss is that used game retailers like gamestop, GAME are making massive profits(well not GAME they just filed for bankruptcy), but gamestop had profits of like 1.5billion for fiscal year 2011. And the publishers just want more profits. I personally think that in the next they will just have a evolved form of the online pass to try to get some money from used game sales.
