This year's 33rd issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is announcing on Saturday that the upcoming new film adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga will be released on March 30.

The film will be directed by Masahiro Hosoda (Dragon Ball Z episode director, Nangoku Shounen Papuwa-kun) at Toei and written by Yūsuke Watanabe (live-action 20th Century Boys trilogy, Gantz, Bloody Monday, Future Diary), with Tadayoshi Yamamuro (Dragon Ball Movie 4: The Path to Power, Beet the Vandel Buster) acting as the lead animation director.

The announcement also features the URL www.dragonball2013.com, which currently redirects to a blank page on Toei's official website with the URL http://www.toei-anim...13_dragonballz/.

In a comment printed alongside the announcement, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama notes that the adaptation will mark the first time he has been so deeply involved in the production of an anime, in this case as early as the screenwriting stages. Toriyama also says that the film will retain the atmosphere of the original while adding small amounts of "modern flavor."

The announcement lists Fox International Productions Japan as a member of the film's production committee, alongside Shueisha, Fuji TV, Toei Animation, Bandai, and Bandai Namco Games.

The official website for the magazine had already opened a "D" teaser page with a countdown to a "surprise" on Saturday, July 14.

Update: More film details added.

Update 2: Details regarding film's production committee added. Thanks to Liam for the tip.

From the picture, it's at least going to be set during the Buu saga or right after (grown Gohan, kid Trunks and Goten). I'm interested in finding out what the story will be about. Will it be an all new story, or will it simply retell part of the Buu saga (a way to watch Kai, then go to GT without going WTF!!!)? We'll have to wait and see what develops.

Well its going to be around the Buu arc since you can see Goten and Trunks. But alot of people over on Daizex is wondering if they are going to do a rebuild movie like the Eva movies for the Buu arc. I think that would be amazing, split the arc in a few movies or one huge movie. Im just excited that they are finally doing a movie since the 90s. Im not counting the new OVAs since they arnt movies like movies 1-13.

So far its looking promising since Akira is going to be deeply involved in this, I wonder how much money they left at his doorstep to be involved haha. Cant wait to see the animation in HD.

I hope FUNimation will get around to licensing the last couple OVA's and grab this movie as well. Dragon Ball Z is just one of those shows where I think the dub cast outshines the Japanese cast (for one thing, Goku sounds like a girl in the Japanese version.... ).

Wait a DBZ movie that's not live action? Yeah!

I haven't seen DBZ since Toonami days (not sure if Team Four Star counts). One of these days I need to properly watch the thing (contradicting what I said about Sailor Moon lol). I hear those DBZ Level things are good.

Also let me just leave this here...

Funny thing is is thats not even Goku. There is no SSJ5. Here is where the AF and the picture came from: http://thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/fans/dragon-ball-af-origin-revealed/

All hail Toriyama-sensei!

For finally getting off his ass and giving the DBZ fans what they're asking for - "more DBZ ... that is not GT! ... and that doesn't suck!"

This is perhaps one of the few series I've only seen the dub of although when it gets released, I'll probably be too hyped to wait for a dubbing and just watch the damn thing with subtitles.

Yes ... even though adult Goku is voiced by a woman ... sigh.

This seems very promising. I can see this going in either a really good path and or really bad. If they don't do it correctly, it will be a complete bomb but if it is done right, there will be a huge hype over it. I am honestly hoping for the latter. Huge Dragon Ball fan so even with the possibility that it could bomb out, still really excited about this!

Well, I found this:

'...will be set betweeen the 517th and 518th installments of Akira Toriyama's original manga. Specifically, it is set during the "lost decade" of story time after the end of the battle with Majin Buu. Kuririn, Piccolo, Vegeta, and other familar characters will appear in the film. The film is not a spinoff, but a story in the official history of Dragon Ball.'

now I'm looking forward to it even more!

Hopefully this turns out to be a great movie! To go down in History with some of the other greats that the DBZ movies have presented us. I really look forward to hearing more about this and hopefully they will get around to dubbing this as soon as possible.

Now that has gotten me even more excited to see what becomes of this movie, I now know at least it will be some bad spin off. Thanks RazorDan for that useful piece of information.
