Anime+Live Action=Failure?

I remember in 2009 watching Dragonball Evolution.Having been a fan of DBZ from a young age I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie.Big mistake.I was horrified by what I saw in that cinema and was actually pretty upset at what 20th Century Fox did to my beloved Dragonball.

Fast foward like about a year.Having just watched Death Note (first anime I saw that wasn't Dragonball or Naruto) and loved series I found out that there is two live-action films of the series being shown on Film 4.Having spent between 5 and 6 hours glued to the T.V watching the two movies,I went to bed at 4am feeling very happy about seeing a good live-action film based on anime.

With rumours of a potential Akira live action film and Kenau Reeves playing Spike Spegiel in a potential Cowboy Bebop live-action film and a Neon Genesis Evangelion live-action film being possible, the question that I would like ask everyone else is what do you think about anime being made into live-actions films?

The difference between the Dragon Ball movie and the Death Note movies is that Dragon Ball Evolution was made in Hollywood thus they creators had probably never even saw the Anime and they Americanized it in hopes of drawing in watchers that don't give a shit about Anime. While on the other hand the Death Note movies were made in Japan by people who actually had seen the Anime and actually cared for it's story enough to not want to screw it over.

Any Anime movie turned Live Action in Hollywood is guaranteed to be a failure.

So I take it your not looking foward to Cowboy bebop with Kenau Reeves?

Chances are slim that they'll even make that movie. Keanu Reeves has been trying since 2008 to get the studios to pick it up but they still haven't agreed to it. They did write a script but it was extremely high budgeted and no one felt the pay out would be worth the risk at those stakes. The last statement about this movie was on April 6, 2011 and Keanu Reeves gave an interview where he said he still is trying to get it accepted but that it's 'still uncertain'.

I would love to see live action anime's done but people with the right vision need to be behind it and make sure they do not water it down to please or gain a wider audience. I could see Reeves playing Spike maybe back in his Bill & Ted days but not now. I read James Cameron is said to be working on Battle Angel Alita and that Speilberg may do Ghost In The Shell, we'll see.

Okay, here's a little something that's about to get ruined - Akira

One of the greatest anime movies in history, which potentially brought the anime industry to where it is today is gonna be remade by Hollywood.

Bigger fail - Akira remake or Cowboy Bebop remake?

Supposedly the Akira remake will be in two parts and will follow the manga storyline, which is much better and much more coherent than the anime storyline. It will probably be Americanised though, which will just completely ruin it.

I have to agree with Koby. If Hollywood touches it, it's going to be an abomination. The Dragonball movie and The Last Airbender were enough proof. I did hear about Cameron wanting to make a Battle Angel Alita movie too. I'll admit I have a little hope for that after considering Avatar, but still not going to be looking forward to what they'll do to it. It's funny, I actually like the live action Death Note movies better than the anime. You can tell that they want to do the anime justice.

What's sad is that Avatar: The Last Airbender could have been amazing had it been in the right hands. I mean, had the director actually watched and enjoyed the series, it wouldn't have come out like that.

Honestly, not all live action animu movies are bad. For example, the Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni live action is actually quite nice even though it's live action. But thenyou've got the K-On!! live action that's just a fail. My point's pretty much that it's the studio, not the fact that it's animu turned live-action that can make the live-action movie any good. Although you've got DBZ: Evolution, which was a fail even though the creator himself oversaw it. There was no excuse for fail like that.

Another example of a Japanese Live-Action film. Reminds me of my previous post, lol.

Umm you do know.. Avatar: The Last Airbender is an AMERICAN made CARTOON right? It's not Anime. That was essentially America messing up it's own stuff there.

Yes I know it's technically American, but I always call it an anime anyway referencing to the style of the cartoon and its anime influences. I never call it an American made cartoon either since the animation itself was made in South Korea.

hm...keanu reeves as spike...lol

as to hollywood destroying anime...it does really depend on who is the director. Think about it...it speilberg or cameron, heck even Mr. Jackson or Blomkamp or Abrams got a hold of any of the anime rights to do a live movie, they could make masterpieces. Americnised, but still good.

Akira is looking up to be decent at least, but they are obviously changing the setting a bit to relate to their target audience. Manhattan instead of Neo Tokyo. Also, going in to see a film like this, you have to go in with an open mind. Pre movie bias is a huge factor in what people think of a movie. Look at The Last Airbender, alot of the fans went in to see it, and hated it. Yet it was a pretty high grossing movie in the overall market.

I'm personally looking forward to the Akira movie, as Di Caprio is connected to the movie, along with rumours of Nolan being involved as well. The Cowboy Bebop has potential, Reeves bringing in his "Neo-esque" style could make it for a decent portrayal of the cult classic. The rumours of a Macross/Robotech live action movie got me more intrigued, as well as the GITS-Speilberg, and Battle Angel Alita rumours...can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hopes up, but expectations low...I'll just have to wait and see...

The only live-action adaptation I've liked so far is Blood: The Last Vampire. I haven't liked any others, whether they were made by Hollywood or in Japan. To be honest I'm not looking forward to seeing any of the rumored upcoming Hollywood projects either, simply because the right people aren't involved to make the adaptations faithful to the source material. If it was Peter Jackson maybe, but the current people? Hell no.
