This question is a little difficult because there is really not one pure answer. Neither is better in all categories of judgment. What do I mean?

Fullmetal Alchemist has emotion, it draws you in, makes you feel for the characters almost like what is going on is real.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood has a better story. The story is much more diverse and interesting and the animation is a lot higher quality. However it seems to lack the emotion of the original and to me falls a little flat at time. The beginning was horribly rushed to where I cannot really recommend watching the beginning. They assumed everyone had watched the original so they rushed everything. Even afterwards the pacing is too fast. The fast pacing may be why it lacks the emotion. It doesn't give the time needed to draw you in.

Overall, I've only seen 39 episodes of Brotherhood and honestly I could only give it an 8.5/10 while the original on the other hand still holds true at a 10/10 for me. The emotion is where it counts the most. Without that it just falls flat.

I couldn't say. Not to the extent of Koby's explanation at least. I haven't really watched very many episodes of Brotherhood. To my knowledge, goes to show how animes can differ from their manga counterparts.

I pretty much stopped after a few episodes of Brotherhood just because I felt the story was becoming stagnant. I had watched the original like, years before; I guess the it was like beating a dead horse - I just didn't want to go back and rewatch a re-do of the story. (It takes a lot for me to go back and re-read a book; and so far Halo: The Fall of Reach holds that title.) Many people say Brotherhood is superior to the original, but oftentimes I find they lack reasons as to why; other people I just want to punch in the face because they're so insistent about its superiority. I remember when people thought Brotherhood meant "Fullmetal Alchemist Season 3" not "Original Manga Re-do."

I actually like Full Metal Alchemist a little more than Brotherhood. Brotherhood has the better visuals and story, but the original series drew me in and made me care about the characters. My family was particularly upset when Hughes got killed in the original. Hughes gushing over his daughter was funny. I think the characters were actually more developed in FMA than FMAB IMHO.

I think they're both really good in different ways. FMA has more depth and to me, it's darker and more emotional. FMAB is funnier and it has a better story (probably because it follows the manga but I started reading afterwards so I didn't really know at the time). FMAB also has better animation and is available in HD which is way better. However, with that said, I still liked the the original adaptation slightly more than the second one.

While I like the story of Brotherhood better, it doesn't have quite the emotional draw the original has. Also I like the music for the original a lot more than brotherhood. Brothers is still my favorite anime song to date. I feel like it was sort of smart for Brotherhood to quickly cover what happened in the original, but it did lose a lot of the emotional tension. Hughes's death was no where near as horrible in brotherhood, even when I watched the original a second time it still hit me pretty hard.

this is kinda hard to tell.. both series are good but i would prefer fma brotherhood for that since it is completely tied up with the manga.

i also love how the characters where being designed in fma brotherhood.

the only thing that i love on the original full metal alchemist was how it ended. (i much more prefer sad endings anyway)

^ what he said, though I prefer brotherhood over the original, the ending for the original was much more sad, which I like(though I have complained about it in the past, brotherhood ended really happy, but was still great.

Eh? Did that many people really like the animation style of Brotherhood that much better than the original? I honestly thought it almost all looked the same to me. What was most irksome to me probably had to be the OP's and EDs. I was already used to the original's...

The original.

Couldn't sit through Brotherhood. It was like watching it all over again but not as good...

Did you get past episode 13 before dropping Brotherhood?

The story is completely different at that point.

They fit the first series first 26 episodes into the first 13 of Brotherhood with some slight changes to make it accurately follow the manga.

If you didn't get past the first 13 then obviously you'd think it was nothing more than a rehash, but you should really try to continue watching it. It may not be as good as the original, but it is a completely different story.
