What are some formats that you guys like the best? im asking because i see MVK everywhere and ok im fine with that until i want to get some HD anime and it ends up in MVK, now i cant play that on my computer because its a old 2005 model i believe and i cant update it. I would play the vids on my PS3 or Xbox but they don't play MVK, and i would stream them from my computer to my PS3 but again crappy computer wont do that either, any help here on what i should look for will be nice....

Note:i do use AVI or MP4 most of the time for my PS3....

First off it's mkv.

Secondly people use it because it allows the use of multiple audio, video, and subtitle tracks. Along with the use of soft-subs. That way you don't have to mess with encoding the subs into the video, and you can easily rip the subtitles and edit them etc. Overall MKV is the best format, just that most media players besides your computer are unable to play MKV.

If you are wanting to play them on various things like PS3, 360, etc.. then H264 codec MP4 would be best. Actually the majority of MKV is encoded like that and then everything is muxed into the MKV. As MKV is simply a container, just like MP4 is a container. H264 is a codec. Most AVI container files use the XVID or DIVX codec.

You could possibly use Yamb to demux the dub audio track along with the video file from an MKV back into MP4 and play them. I haven't really tried since I play everything on my computer anyways except for when I'm using my iPod which then I encode my own files for from the MKV's.

I think you mean to say you can't play 720p videos. Not all mkv videos, because if you say that your pc is a 2005 model and you can't play mkv then I think you have not installed the codecs required to play them. http://www.cccp-project.net/

Get the codecs you will be able to watch mkv 480p vids. And as for the 720ps you need better graphics card 256MB or above(But I don't know if you're pc has the slots for a 256MB above graphics card).

no no i can play normal 480p mkv almost just fine, with a little bit of freezing (but rly rare) in the videos. i was asking for, what is a good/small(doesn't rly need to be small)/nice/& compatible formats(or as Koby said container) to play on consoles. & Koby i would love to re encode my own videos but as of right now idk how to do that. i mean all i do is reconvert some if i rly wanted to but that takes to long and wastes space so i don't.

Your computer sounds like one of my old ones. It's not that it can't play mkv it's simply the H264 codec seems to take better computers to play them as you can have an XVID codec MKV file equivalent to the H264 one and it'd play but not keep up with the H264 one.

I hear some people install a codec into their CCCP called CoreAVC which runs the H264 codec much faster and efficiently allowing older computers to keep up. I think it costs though but you might be able to find it pirated or something I don't know, just look it up. With it you should then be able to play 480p H264 MKV and possibly even 720p. I'm not completely sure as when I had that issue I just re-encoded all my Anime to XVID or just downloaded XVID AVI files until I had enough money and bought a new computer back in 2008.

As for re-encoding videos. I always used AutoMen from Doom9 forums. Although I tried using it on my new laptop I got over the Holidays and it seems to crash every time I hit encode on Windows 7. So I don't know what to do, haven't contacted the creator about the problem yet.

Here is a link to the files that the PS3 Can play--http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html..

Here is a link for the 360 file types that can be played on Xbox 360--

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945416?sd=xbox..

If you just want to change the format from mkv too mp4 or AVI, just use video converter.

Here is two links for some that work well..

And a Question LiquidSnake--- What program do you use when you watch your videos on your computer??? and do you have the cccp codec Pack??

Another encoder you can try is handbrake, they released a new version this month that works alot better then the last one. It has built in presets for apple products like ipod and iphone. The old version failed alot when trying to encode mkvs that weren't encoded with it, but the newer version seems to be better. It's not perfect but as far as free goes it's the best I've used so far. Biggest problem with it now is that it needs vlc to play the preview encodes. While I don't really have a problem with vlc, handbrake seems to do something to vlc's files that cause it not to fully close when you let the preview file play till the end. I work around this by closing it when it opens and then playing the preview file with mpc-hc. If you decide to give it a try you can pm me and I'll try to help with some of the settings. I'm still learning myself though, so all I can really offer is what not to do.

na man i don't need to know what my consoles play i know that already, i mean ive had them for over 5years now so i better know what they can play xD...... & for everyone and you, i use to have just the regular MPC with a xp codec pack but i recently just got the CCCP HPC-HC ed.. it works better then my last ed so that's nice, but still cant even play 720p MKV. i tired testing Gundam Unicorns first ep that i have in that QT and the video plays with only a little video lag, and the audio at a point like jumps 20secs or so further. i can fix that by jumping back a few secs in the vid but no matter what it always jumps further.... anyway i don't need help with that as much as id like to know what all the codecs do, i mean my old one use to only have two pulled up one for subs and the other for the video i belive. now there's like 5 of them, two of witch are the same but i have no idea what the others are lol...

Note: im going to look for a trend later for some answers for this.

As an Anime watcher I prefer MKV because as already been mentioned multiple audio tracks are nice and make life easy. Although to be honest if it wasn't for the dual-audio thing I wouldn't be a big fan of MKV, they seem to glitch a lot.

When watching shows that aren't Anime I'd prefer MPG because I feel it's a higher quality and more reliable format.

When editing I prefer AVI or MPG because they're file formats that work with almost every video editing software, Window or Mac, and that makes them more useful when for whatever reason I have to switch computers.

Honestly overall AVI is my favorite. It's not quite as good quality as MPG, and the file size tends to be much larger than most, but if you don't know what file type will work on the machine you're using then use AVI, 9 times out of 10 it will work. Unless the machine will only play some obscure format that was made specifically for said machine(I'm looking at you digital camcorders) then it will play on your device.

If you just want a comparison of codecs and containers you can check out the two links below.

Codec Comparison

Container Comparison

Personally, my favorite codecs are mpeg and x264, and my favorite containers are mpg, mkv, and m4v/mp4. Mpeg is probably still my over all favorite because I am most comfortable with it, but as I get better with x264 I prefer it more and more. I use m4a/mp4 for all my music, and have done so for some time now.

If your having playback issues hanging, freezing, etc. Why no look into coreavc. It a wonder codec for h264 playback that greatly reduces the load on PC during playback. I use on old traveling laptop from around the same time (2005). And it allows me to play back 1080p movies with out any hiccups.

Mind you coreavc isn't free, but I think it's worth it's weight in copper :ewhz:

Personal preference is mkv. and thx 'nomadcf' the for the info on coreavc it has helped my playback issues on 1080p.

The link to get it working correctly with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (Included with CCCP) for anyone interested is,

http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=CoreAVC

Hope the link worked, first time I've attempted to add one, regardless it's there copy and paste if it doesn't work out.

Hope this is of help to someone.

If you are gonna do AVI, then it's best to use these settings for the majority of 396-480p Anime:

Audio: MP3 128 kbps

Video: XVID 1,100 kbps

cool but im only converting HD stuff, and only when stagevu cant encode them properly. there have only been two things that i need to convert right now, one is the 1080p AVI rip of Gundam Unicorn Ep2, stagevu uses the Japanese audio track for some reason.. & Freezing Ep1, i cant seam to get it to encode at all. would the same settings apply to HD videos as well?
