Okay, so to all the Final Fantasy fans out there, i got a question for all of you.

HOW FAR DO YOU THINK THIS FRANCHISE WILL GO?

i.e. how many MORE final fantasies do you think square enix will make before doing something else?

i think they're gonna keep milking this cow till the end of eternity.

Hence, i say that there will be ONE MILLION KAZILLION BILLION ZILLION more games ... but FF7 WILL STILL RULE!!!!! :P

Hard to say. The Final Fantasy name alone is so popular that it would be stupid not to keep making the series not to mention the ungoldly amount of money they make. The only way I can see the FF series coming to an end is if they made a few FF that were lame games. EXample, if FF XVI and XVII were a bust I can see them ending the FF series to try to save face. Personally I didn't care much for the last installment. Found that one pretty lame.

Yeah, they'll expand upon their current universes more and more eventually. A compilation project for VI and IV sound pretty good right about now. Oh, and FFVII remake will come once they want to make some safe money.

As for the main series of the games.....well I think we're done with the main titles for this generation given how long it takes them to produce a game these days. So I say last call will be FFXV for the PS4 and if that doesn't sell, then the series will definitely end there.

well i guess it the end of FF then, both FF13 and 14 sucked BIG TIME

"hey square enix you f**kers hurry up and remake 7 already, you suck at trying to come up with ya own stuff you useless c**ts"

FF7 is really not as good as people say it is. It amazes me how highly talked of it is but i guess thats me though. I personally would like to see a remake of FF8 or FF9.

what the people want is blood since almost every good game in this generation has it!

final fantasy 1-10 are the best but they screwup on words but the sequels and prequels been getting good like final fantasy 7 crisis core and we still got to see what final fantasy versus 13 has to offer since it has blood in its game play and thats what we currently need a good story with blood in it and on the game play, dont get me wrong i like the others but i got bored with the same thing over and over they need to improve there gaming and stories because im getting sleepy with the same stuff over and over i hope final fantasy versus 13 gives me a big slap in the face like crisis core did because square enix your gunna loose your stock holders with that big surprise of failures of final fantasy 11,13 and 14. still we'll have to wait for what final fantasy versus 13 has to offer and see if it improve the games of final fantasy.

TBH I don't think the series will survive much longer because SE is really losing their edge with making games good the latest games XII ((no really nailed down story and multiple main characters...)) and I heard XIII was rough too but I've yet to play it.

Unless they really get their asses together and actually make a awesome story plot like 8,9 or something the series probably won't make it past 20

I think they should go back to their roots and listen to the fan's more and remake some of the favorites ((7...eww..,8 Yay =D, and 9 would make awesome remakes and would net them million's more easy =/))

I'd just like to say that a remake of FF7 is NOT safe money. It has been said multiple times by people that to actually remake the game they would need a team at least twice the size of their current one which considering they have around 200-250 people working on the games would mean 400-500 people and even with that size team would take them at least twice as long to make so around 8-10 years.

Lets do the maths on that. I know from experience that the initial wage for a programmer is around £23-£25k so if we average all the staff to have a wage of around £35k to include all the managers and senior staff (some senior programmers can earn upwards of £70k) we have wages of between £14-£17.5 million a year just for wages. If we work that out for for the duration of the project that means wages in the range of £112-£175 million for the whole project. If we take the middle value (£144 million) and divide that by the average price of a new game over here (developers get no money from second hand sales) which is around £40 they would need sales of around 3.6 million units just to cover the cost of the wages which is using a conservative estimate for the wages.

This model also doesn't cover other costs such as:

  • Building the engine for the game which will probably add another 2 years to development time at least.
  • Voice Acting which would need to be included for the game to be up to the same standards as the more recent FF games.
  • Updating the music for modern times.
  • Fuel costs for the electricity being used.
  • promotional costs for TV/print adverts and launch parties.
  • The cost to translate the game to 9/10 languages (Japanese, Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese Dutch)
  • Manufacturing and shipping costs

These are just some examples of costs, I'm sure there are more than I haven't thought off. It's thought that the original FF7 cost around £20 million. I would say if we add all the other costs together a conservative estimate would be about £220 million which would mean sales of 5.5 million units just to break even. Considering the average game needs sales of about 1-1.2 million units to break even that somewhat puts it into perspective. Plus in the the time frame we're talking about we will definitely be talking PS4 maybe even PS5 by then and development costs have grown exponentially in the past from around £1m on the PS1 to £4-5m on the PS2 to around £20m for the average PS3 game so it that progression continues we'll be looking at development costs for the average PS5 game of around £200m and, if a FF7 remake was on that console it wouldn't be an average game given the scope and polish SE are known for giving their games.

Now, I'm not the one saying that this will never happen, but, Yoshinori Kitase, who produced Crisis Core has said "If we were to recreate final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we'd imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together! So it's looking pretty unrealistic." which would mean development time of around 10-14 years which could increase wage costs to around £225m already.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the chance of FF7 being remade is about as likely as pigs flying over an icy Hell. Don't get me wrong, I'd love the see it remade as much as the next guy as it would be a significant improvement over what we've seen instead, even though I think it's over-hyped and not all "that".

To answer the question of the thread it wouldn't surprise me if the series continue indefinitely. If they do stop it because of failure in future games it won't be stopped completely, just for enough time for people to forget about the series then, bam, back with a reboot. Don't forget this is the franchise that stopped Square from going bankrupt in the 80s.

If the new Deus Ex was anything to go by, then SE seems very hopeful to be hitting the 20-region.

In all seriousness though, at this stage I've lost all hope for future FF titles. I've disliked almost everything SE has released after Sakaguchi was thrown out and Nojima went freelance. Saying that, despite my lack of hope for improvement in quality in the near future, some part of me really wants them to find their feet and recapture what they had pre-Wada.

While the idea of FFXIII-2 churns my stomach, I will be buying it simply to see if it is an improvement on XIII.

I feel that the idea of Final Fantasy has changed so much that it's gone farther away from what it was. Each title telling it's own story without competing with previous installments, or having to live up to some kind of legacy. While X-2 was fun in terms of its gameplay, it also opened up a path that ruined the complete-ness of a title. It gives SE an excuse to leave a story half-finished or barely even polished, if they can whip out a sequel or related title to add depth. A title I really feel did not need this was FFVII - those sequels/prequels have so many holes in them it's not even funny if they're actually supposed to tie in with the original title.

So to answer - despite the dropping quality, I think Final Fantasy will continue and then when they reach a point where it's make or break, SE will have to repeat the origins of Final Fantasy and hope to God it pulls through.

And no, I do not want an FFVII remake...especially if it gives them an excuse to include their retcon characters.

let's be realistic here, SE are going to milk the franchise until it stops making money, and I don't know about anyone else, but i liked 13, but I seem to be alone on that one. 14 was fail, no question about it. SE can't make MMO's to save their life, and right now they need to try and save their asses.

as awesome as a ff7 remake would be, or even a ff8 or 9 remake, I would like to see them not made to ff13 graphical standard, but perhaps a little lower scale, they already have the character design and gameplay design done, there would be no need for the to change it, so all that would be left is to code and model the whole thing. i've done both modeling and coding so that will take a LONG time to do, and a long time to get right, but a lot of the "limbo work" is done for them already.

i would actually really like proper 3D voice acted PS vita versions of FF1-6 since they were all pixel graphics originally. Why try for something new when you can milk what you've already made ^_^

I remember when square was in a position where they had to be creative otherwise they would have gone bankrupt and then final fantasy saved their ass. Now they may not be that desperate but there games are slowly going down i think because a lot of the guys that worked on these games have slowly retired or whatever. Until the series gets put under the kind of stress that is going to bring them back to their roots they are going to continue to lose fans and not just ordinary fans, the ones that saved them in the begining. They are two bad games away from dying and one good one to return them to where they were.

Final Fantasy will go on for as long as the franchise makes money. For the main series, it's really hard to say. Square really seems to be going safe with making side stories and spin-off titles that the main series is going off track. I hope Final Fantasy XV will a better experience and that Square will STOP with the MMOs. -_-
