[Anime] Good older anime (say late 80's- early 90's)

I find myself not getting into a lot of the newer anime coming these days, and have already seen all the top names one might think of, so im looking to find some good older anime. sometimes i get turned off by anime style used back then, and it stops me from really giving the show a chance.

any recommendations for some good older anime?

I like more darker themes, but action and romance can work too

You could give fist of the north star a try, That's about all I can remember unfortunately, I've seen lots of old anime movies but I never could remember them.

Macross-It's Mecha/Action and has alittle romance, I think http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross

Serial Experiments Lain-It's has a dark theme, no action or romance though.
