Mass Effect 3 - The Choices come to Haunt

Okay, I've been trying for a while to find a flaw in these game series to rub in the face of a BioWare fanboy here and I have failed miserably in every possible way.

Fact of the matter is ... there has NEVER - EVER - EVER been a game like the Mass Effect series before. These games make you make choices that you have no idea will affect the game later on.

Choosing whether to pick Ashley or the biotics guy to live (Yeah, I forgot his name.)

Picking between Ashley/biotics guy and Liara as the romance interest.

Killing Wrex off or having enough Paragon to convince him.

and then the ME2 choices -

gaining the loyalty of your crewmates, upgrading your ships and doing certain quests would determine who would die and who would live in the final mission.

I have yet to see a game which provides as many choices as this game. But that aside, the thing that impressed me the most was this -

BIOWARE DOES NOT GIVE ANY CANON FOR THIS SERIES.

This is something I haven't seen in ANY game out there. Even Dragon Age has a certain canonic sense to it.

In Mass Effect, even with all the novels, none of it clashes with the stuff you do in the games.

In this way, every person who's done something different in the game will have his or her own ending and saga.

There may be a Shephard who never did a bad thing in his life. There may be a Shephard who died in all three games in the end. There may be a Shephard who was too drunk all the time to tell one lady from another.

And the fact of the matter is -

WE DO NO KNOW WHICH SHEPHARD IS CANONIC BECAUSE THERE IS NO CANON.

So then, will you - the player choose to carry on your save file from ME2 or will you play it safe and do the digital comic choices like were available in ME2. Do you trust everything you did in the last two games enough to let the fate of the world be decided by you and you alone or will you go 100% paragon in the comic and then play ME3?

For me, as much as I want a happy ending with Shephard and Tali finding someway to be together and killing off the Reapers, I don't wanna do the comic and then feel like I don't know my crewmates anymore.

Biotics guy's name was Kaidan :D. I saved Wrex and Ashley but let Kaidan die..

Yeah I agree it's a very unique game and also up there in the top 5 favourite saga's. As for me I am a paragon player, I don't have the heart to do cruel choices unless I am bored and willing to do an entire playthrough of it like in Star Wars KOTOR.

I haven't played ME2 yet unfortunately, I don't have the time for it and what time I do have I usually do other stuff. Perhaps soon I will. Nevertheless I would be confident in my ME2 profile enough to continue on with that in ME3.

I still need to play the second. I deleted my account from ME1 for some stupid reason. will that matter much?

well, if you have your save files from ME1, it automatically fills in the choices you made in it for ME2.

However, if you haven't but remember most of it, then there is an "interactive comic" option in which it asks you what choices you made at certain points so you can still have your character from ME1.

There is a huge Plothole in Mass effect 2 though I guess it could count as a flaw. Anyone remember "Hey let's go on an unnamed mystery mission and jam everyone into the shuttle even though we only normally take 3 and leave the Normandy completely defenseles, won't want anyone to be left behind in case a collector ship finds us." that always bugged me.

My shepherd is mostly a renengade though, in one I was a full paragon, the Renegade options are just much more appealing in two I never could pass up the opportunity to tell that ship repair guy "You're working too hard."

A surprising amount of people died for me in the suicide mission though, I didn't do Zaeed's mission, I failed Thane's mission and lost Miranda's loyalty in her argument with jack. That cost me, Kasumi, Thane, Miranda, Grunt,Zaeed and Garrus. Garrus hurt me the most though, he got carried of by the swarms..a pretty undiginifying way for such an awesome character to die.

Also Part 2 fixed my main gripe about 1, no romance options for Tali..seriously she has the best voice.

hm, ME3 will be pretty damn good. But I don't know if I understand what your saying iki. Mass Effect has canon, two novels a comic book series....the works. So either I'm not understanding what you saying or your using the word canon wrong...

Ah yeah, it does get a bit confusing. We actually had this as a class discussion once.

Well, to phrase it properly, by no canon, I mean that Mass Effect truly lets you role play as a Commander fighting an alien forces. The choices you make in the game affect you and you alone. Sure, the novels may be there but we have this huge BioWare fanboy in class who's pretty much read, seen and played everything related to Mass Effect and he assured us that even in all the novels and stuff, they don't directly talk about what you're doing in the games since the author doesn't know what choices people made. As a result, every single Shephard out there can be fit into those novels to make sense. BioWare has never released a statement saying that destroying the Council was what the CANON Shephard did. There are a thousand Shephards with a thousand endings and all of those endings belong to the people who carved out their Shephards. I hope that makes as much sense as I think it does.

Ouch. The same happened to a buddy of mine who just wanted to breeze through the game and didn't get any of the Ship Upgrades or do any Loyalty mission. Generally though, for the highest success rate for all people alive, I'd say to do this -

1) Get the upgraded Shields and Weapons for the ship.

2) Do as many loyalty missions as possible, or at least the ones for Garrus, Legion, Samara and Tali.

3) Leave for the Omega 4 Relay as soon as the crew gets kidnapped. If you don't half the crew will be "processed" by the Collectors by the time you get there and you'll lose Kelly Chambers.

4) When you reach the Relay, get Garrus to lead the firefight (Jacob works too but Garrus is more awesome) and Tali to go up the vent (cuz i romanced her. I wanted her to be of some use. Legion can do this too and his commentary is epic)

5) Use Garrus for the second firefight again and get Samara to be your force field user. (Jack works here too but don't use her unless you've done her loyalty mission)

6) When the crew needs to be returned, just make sure that you use a LOYAL member to escort them for zero casualties. I always send Jacob since he has nothing better to do.

TA-DA! All people have survived, if you managed to make sure Tali/Legion don't fry in the vents, that is.

Also, yeah, even I was kinda pissed that I took all that time making a strong ass team and I could only take two for the final boss.

yeah, I sent legion down that vent and some of the stuff he comes out with is priceless. Samara as forcefield...check. I had jack do the escort and she worked finely. Garrus on the first, jacob on the second. No loss of life.

I must admit tho, the end choice kinda annoyed me, and the fact that everything gets blown to smithereens....meh. I think taking over control of the collectors might've been a better idea, if it was possible of course.

Anyhoo, ME3 is out very soon, so I think I'll go and replay ME and ME2

I'm going to do that too, but I don't know if I'll have the time too finish them both. I'll probably buy Mass Effect 3 on release day and it will stay unopened until I finish the other two.

I have to make a completely new game, because I played multiples games with the same character in ME1, so my choices were all messed up when I started ME2.

I have the same problem. I've got about 3 characters on ME1, a soldier, a tech and a biotic. On ME2 the list is huge, and I've done loads of characters, of all types, sexes and personality. Although as I have for all of the others, I'll start with a soldier....easiest character for me to play with and often has some shit hot weapons....lol

Well, I finally pre-ordered the N7 edition on Origin today although I would've preferred Steam. Can't have everything, I suppose. I'm also slightly pissed that the "Pre-order ME3 and get BF3" scheme applies only in the U.S. and Canada.

Anyone getting this game on the PC besides me? If not, try out the multi player demo. It oughta be enough to convince you.

Spoiler: It's a LOT like the Hoard mode from GoW.

Also, I think I'm gonna go Solider for my first play through (I love the Adrenaline Rush when everyone freezes up for me to take the perfect head-shot.) and then go Vanguard for my "Ashley" playthrough.
