Shinato
Title pretty much says it all. Do you read fanfiction of your favourite anime's? Are any of them good? Or are they just made by people with too much time on their hands? Do you read or write fanfiction?Personally, I love to write fanfiction when I'm bored. Sometimes it's only a page and sometimes more.
† Talena Mae
It depends on how well written it is in the end... If it does not feel like it is the real charaters then I will stop reading then and there and never read another by that person. (I am evil like that, but the way I see it if you are writing a fanfic, stick with the personalities of who you are writing about and try not to go overbaord with the characters you introduce.)If the fanfic is like the actual anime then I will keep reading.. That's all I think I need to say, and remember this is my opinion ^.^ one does not have to like it =D
BlackDahlia
Personally, I think it's kind of stupid, but that's because I've yet to read any fanfiction that did the anime/manga any justice. The way I see it is, if you're going to steal an idea and take it in a new direction, at least keep the characters as they were in the original. If you're making it go in a different direction, with the same characters, but different personalities, you might as well go ahead and make new characters. I remember I saw one about Naruto where Sasuke went ahead and got Naruto pregnant and all I could think was "What is wrong with people?" lol I mean, is that really necessary? This person clearly wanted to make a yaoi scenario with characters from a story where there is simply no room for that. Make your own characters if that's what you want to do.Honestly, I've had some bad experience with fanfiction, so I choose to stay away from it. I won't read people's fanfiction if I can help it, it's just not for me. It's a shame too because I'm sure there are some people that would be really good at this. Guess I just love storybook novels, just look at Deviant Art with the things they can do on Naruto's new nine tails form.

Ablamar
I tend to stay away from fanfiction period because none that I have read for any genre, series, books or whatever, did any justice to those in any way.
Nienna
Fanfiction tends to be a mixed bag, a lot of it is garbage but some of it is really good. I started writing fanfiction in my teens as a writing exercise. There's an obscene amount of work involved in creating characters and a world for them to populate so sometimes the best way to hone your writing skills is to play in a pre-built world. Having said that, good fanfiction should never contain the disclaimer OOC (Out of Character) And the rules of the character's reality should be followed to the letter. That's not to say characters can't evolve, but the evolution should be true to both the character and the fandom as a whole. (for instance a 15 year old character will mature by the time they're 20 but they won't radically change their personality type) Finding good fanfiction... now there's a challenge. I can't recount the number of times I've started a fanfiction and said "is that English?" But that's a whole other can of worms.
Bannock
I used to read a fair bit of fanfiction. I can understand the opinion that people should make their own characters if they're going to change their personality or make them do things that aren't at all true to the characters nature, but at the same time a lot of people write fanfiction because they love the characters, but would love them even more if they did whatever the writer imagines. But yeah, male pregnancy fanfiction is a bit weird.
rue669
I don't understand why people would want to write fanfiction? Unless it's to practice your writing, I guess, in a sense, that would help, becuase you're not spending your effort creating an original world and characters but instead you're just practicing writing. That makes some sense to me. I used to write the beginning of FF6 when I was younger. Yeah, but if you're a writer, I say just write your own stories. Nothing wrong with borrowing from anime and video games that you love and are inspired by, as long as give it an original twist.
DestinyBlitz
I LOOOVE writing fanfiction and reading them too! BlackLolitarose
I love writing fanfiction and reading it. Sadly I barely have time for either anymore, but I think it's one of the most fun things a writer can do - an excellent way to blow off what you actually should be writing lol. † poetictragedy
I agree with what most people have said already: Characterization is key. I used to read a ton of fanfiction a few years ago, but got out of the notion. Now as I'm watching new shows, I'm getting back into it again. DrumRoll
99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of fanfiction is utter dross.Sure, there may be the odd gem out there. But theres thousands of brilliant books out there as well, not to mention other anime, films and various other methods of passing time. The trouble is, if someone is brazen enough to write a fanfic, it usually means they are terrible and don't understand the concept of using alternative adjectives. If someone starts "A man walked into the room." I normally stop reading, if's more like "He entered the room with a cautious optimism, but not so much as to shut the door behind him." Of course this is a terrible example, but I am sure you get the idea.

Sometimes it's only a page and sometimes more.I used to read quite a bit of fanfiction mostly for the shipping of characters that have no romance like Bleach etc. And to answer your question, there are some talented writers! It's just that the quantity of these talented writers are heavily disproportionate to the people that just spew cliched or generic plotlines with the supposed characters from the anime. I stopped reading because a lot of people tend to fail with the characterization. I don't blame some of them of course as it can be difficult to do. † RazorDan
I agree with most of the sentiments expressed. It all depends on how close the author sticks to the characters. That's the only reason I'm too cautious to write my own fanfiction, I'm afraid I'll mess up the characters. I breakdown fanfiction into being either bearable, brilliant , an interesting parody or absolute rubbish. Unfortunately, most is absolute rubbish. nickbad1
Depends on how well written. If the story is interesting rather than a coupling story.
Ninjasgetmehot
If the fan fiction is well written and drawn, I can absolutely fall in love with it! I read a lot of online comics and I have soooo many that I absolutely adore. Fan fiction is about the same for me in that sense. I adore it as long as it is well written, and it's my style. Renzourin
i agree with characterization but however ive found a number of anime written by a guy on a site i once knew where he took the characters in a completely different direction in something like a small novel he advanced some 20 years down the road changing and developing the characters further as well as adding complex relationships to it as well i thought it was a rather well done piece
