Anime+Live Action=Failure?

The only live-action adaptation I've liked so far is Blood: The Last Vampire. I haven't liked any others, whether they were made by Hollywood or in Japan. To be honest I'm not looking forward to seeing any of the rumored upcoming Hollywood projects either, simply because the right people aren't involved to make the adaptations faithful to the source material. If it was Peter Jackson maybe, but the current people? Hell no.

Why Peter Jackson?

Because he directed a great movie based on Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and also a remake of King Kong. So yeah he's probably good at adaptations.

Yeah but the both of them were American adaptations(Don't flame me but i think the movies were better than the books). And granted that even not all American adaptations are good either(Eragon), I can't think of anyone who can capture the essence of Japanese shounen anime.

I mean the movie version of Goku was almost like a replica of the Karate Kid rather than the Saiyan he was in the anime.

I enjoyed that one more than the Anime movie, maybe more than the TV series or about the same. Although I wasn't really much of a fan of the TV series and I completely hated the Anime movie. =P Wasn't the live-action film made in the UK though? I may be wrong but I could have probably swore that was the case.

Honestly I think to make a good Anime to Live-Action conversion, one needs to actually have seen the source material, and try not to change character personalities or backgrounds. I can see possibly changing from Japan to Manhattan for example on some things but you can't go changing every single that that made the series what is was.

Also you can't just say this Anime was popular in the US so lets make a Live-Action film about it. I think they really need to sit down and see if it's possible to portray all aspects of the Anime correctly. Dragon Ball Z just really isn't a good choice to do. Between gravity defying hair, all the ki shots, flying etc.. More slice of life series or ones a little more realistic would do far better in the conversion.

Not really because in Death Note, the police are quick to assume a super natural phenomenon and actually believe that people are being killed by their names written in a book - something which would never work in America.

If they really wanna go into making a live-action adaptation, I'd think something more along the lines of Genshiken

You're missing the point. They originally went into this investigation because they felt that someone was "killing criminals from a far off place using powers that were unknown to man simply by knowing their name and face".

That kind of thing would never be accepted in the CIA/FBI which would be two of the most ideal replacements for the ICPO.

From all the crime shows i've seen, they will never accept even the possibility of supernatural phenomenon and most likely won't even think of them as murders. And even Death Note has a shounen aura about it that Hollywood can't deal with yet.

Like Koby said, they should start with Slice of Life anime.

Also,if they were to adapt Death Note they should make it into 3,2-hour films. The first film should end at about the time when Misa is introduced or when L introduces himself to Light and end on a cliffhanger. The second should end just after L has died and Near and Mello are introduced. The third film should of course end with Light's death and should have Ryuk return to MU (Shinigami realm, but you probably knew that).

i like how this turned towards the death note idea. I say this as i have nothin but contempt for death note. People praise it for all it's wonders and mystery, but in truth it is crap...imo.

What koby said is true...Slice of life style animes would be a better idea...but in sayin that...what the hell is the point? Hollywood has enough shitty/crappy/slice of life films as it is. Me, I'd prefer different series' that are more realistic (I mean by anime terms). Requim for a Phantom would be a fricking kick ass adaption, with it's Bourne Identity-esque feel, as would something like Baccano. Hell, Valkyria Chronicles would be absolutly brillant if they made it into a film franchise. Valkyria is realistic (tis a psuedo WWI/WWII series, which relies on some more religious/mystic background, and ends up with

some super powered ladies and a kick ass finale, involving plotting generals and their envy for said super powers

)

Don't suppose anyone here as seen the Gundam "Live action" film. It's canadian, and had a very low budget...but even so it was pretty good. It managed to capture, vaguely, the essence of Gundam; deep plotlines surrounding violence, and a kinda deep character profile. If it had been a Hollywood film, with input from sunrise and a big budget (something along the lines of the Batman or Ironman films) it could have been an epic american adaption of teh japanese metaseries.

I think the alcohol is speaking to me now, but still...I stand by my view and believe with the right cast and production crews, Hollywood could make Anime great.
