† L4ugh
Just wanted to see peoples thoughts on all the tablets that have been coming out lately, or will be released this year. While I'm not a fan of Apple, I have been waiting for tablets to become a reality since I was a little kid watching Star Trek TNG. Now that rivals are finally bringing something to market that can compete with the ipad. I'm trying to narrow down which one I might want to purchase. I was really interested in the epads that Asus has been working on, but they seem to be taking forever to release. Now that I've seen the new Motorola prototype, I really don't know what to think. I'm interested in your thoughts on tablets in general, and any you may be thinking of, or have already, purchased. I'm posting a link to the video I just saw for the prototype below. It uses Android Honeycomb as its OS and seems to be incredibly thin.Motorola Prototype

† L4ugh
The tablets I'm referring to are the ones like the Apple ipad. It's basically a touch screen with computer built in. They are being promoted as an ereader you can also watch movies or play games on. Apple iPad was the first one designed to be keyboard free, but the tablet pc has actually been around a while. Like the Motion Computing ones that were in the Stargate Atlantis series. I'm interested in them because I would like something small and portable I could use to read scanned comic books, as well as my manga, books, and even watch mkvs.
Asch
Hmm......I guess tablets are a success in coming time,I own a Archos 7(o) , and its really a boon, technically, for internet surfing, and as a PmP, we had this concept with MiDs like Nokia 900, its just evolution of it, they are cheaper than Ultra-Portables out their, and are better than cells in terms of internet surfing, or media playing capabilities, also, their cost factor, cost is nearly same as a high end cell for now, makes them ideal replacement(not for cells !!!) realmzmaster
I always ask the question, Why do you need it? What purpose will it serve? I have zero use for one. Therefore it is not on my radar. The applications I run simply will not work on a tablet. It is interesting technology, but it will not replace my laptop or my desktop for sheer power. My desktop can play any game maxed graphics. I like my all in one machine here. It's not very portable but I don't really talk to many people or have any use to carry around a little tablet limited to a lot of things.
† L4ugh
Well CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is almost over now, and tablets were a hot item this year. Anyone that is interested in these tablets should be able to check tech review sites for info on some of the top products. The Motorola tablet I posted about in my original post now has a name, and managed to win some awards at the show. The name of the tablet is the Motorola Xoom but I haven't found a price yet.As for those who still don't know or understand what tablets are intended for, I will try yet again to explain. They are not desktop computers, and are not intended to compete with them in any way. The only computer they even come close to would be a netbook, because some use similar or identical hardware. What they are is a cross between a smart phone and an ereader. They have the size of an ereader and the same ability to display ebooks, but they also have an OS similar, or the same, to smart phones. They also offer downloadable apps like smart phones and will play music, videos, and offer games. The games are not the same ones on your PC, they are platform specific like the ones on smart phones. I understand not being interested in them because you have no use for anything smaller or less powerful then a desktop/labtop, but comparing tablets to desktops is like comparing bicycles to motorcycles. All it really does is misinform people who aren't sure exactly what the technology is or what its intended use is.As for a purpose other then the ones mentioned in my second post, you could use it as a substitute for carrying around a 60 pound backpack to all your college classes. There are also tons of task in the corporate, medical, and academic fields that these devices could be used for as well. In all honesty I would get use to seeing these things, because once they get the bugs worked out of them you're going to start seeing them pop up everywhere. † The Joker
I personally hate tablets. While I can see they're appeal, I would rather have a standard desktop to work from.
Renzo
I'm gonna bump this topic, due to the influx of tablets i've seen being placed on the market in the past few years. I see them everywhere at my job of many different makes and models. I own the new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 32GB, I like to read, so it's good for me rather then having to carry around different books and the selection is massive. Also, the manga and comic book selection is quite impressive. So, i'll probably start buying and reading more manga. The graphics are the best I've seen on a tablet before.. except for maybe the iPad. I haven't got the chance to play around with it much, in regards to movies and other media and apps. But, as soon as i get the opportunity, i'm gonna see what it can do. The processor is pretty fast even when i had a bad internet connection it was still quite speedy. I bought an "origami" protective case/stand that's attractive and holds up the tablet nicely. Anybody else out there have tablet? Or has anyone else joined the hype? Oh, and I forgot to mention that i LOVE my tablet and am very happy with my purchase (although pricey)

† L4ugh
Wow, I didn't even think this was still floating around. Anyone happen to know where Asch ran off too? My nephews have the original kindle and it seemed like a pretty decent little machine for the amount of power it came with. I still haven't bought one yet myself, I always find a way to talk myself out of buying one at the last minute.
Renzo
I love it. It's a little pricey though, because it's still new to the market. It took me a while to finally coming around to buying it. I had it in my shopping cart on amazon for a few months before i actually bought the thing. But, I'm glad i did. If you buy one, make sure you get it without advertisements. Otherwise, on your home screen you'll constantly have advertisements for this and that. Unless you want that sorta thing. I use it everyday, it's great for reading. I've always been partial to physically having the book, comic book.. manga.. because i like the feel of the paper (weird i know). But, the tablets really nice because you can have all of your books on one unit and switch back and forth between books, or you can go right in to the second book. Or, you can take a break from reading and watch a movie or something, or surf the web. It's got a built in dictionary, so you can long click on a word and it'll bring up the definition instantly. You can change the page colors, text colors, text style, you can high light phrases if you're taking notes and much more.
Dark Lucario
Tablets are only good for watching videos and some other things. I rather stay with my computer and laptop they have more power.
slick1109
A few years ago "Netbooks" were all the hype ..... and look what happened. People cant even give them away. I figured tablets would be the same. However they have proved to last a few years now which has surprised me. In my opinion, a Tablet will never replace a laptop, and at least for me, a laptop will never replace my desktop. Just to be clear, I am talking about IBM Compatible PC's ...... not Apple computers and all their limitations. I admit, I did jump on board with the Apple craze and pickup an Ipod touch. Although considering I can download almost any app on it, I would never buy an iPad. If I were to even consider a tablet, it would probably be something like the Galaxy tab 10.1". However I am still unsure if Tablets as a whole are going to last or not.
Ranma-kun
They are useful for playing games or checking your email on the go but they aren't a full PC replacement.
Krispin16
I believe tablets are a good idea as long as it doesn't have anything else to compete with. If your main computer is a desktop, then a tablet is great since it's your "home away from home", but planning to purchase a tablet while also owning a laptop is not the best idea since you're probably only going to take one when you move from place to place. It's the same thing (in my opinion) with smartphones and tablets. When you have both and both kind of run the same apps, you're just going to lean towards one side.
