How to correctly downmix 5.1 audio to 2.0?

Hello, so I've got this 5.1 track that I'd like to downmix, since I'm only going to listen to it through stereo headphones, how should I do it?
Is there a standard method?

It depends how loud you want the "background" sounds to be.  Some ideas here;

Download eac3to (its cli based but there are some GUI's around) and use the following command (adjusting for file names and extension types of course):

eac3to input.ac3 output.ac3 -downStereo
