[Guide] How to block those annoying ads on MyAnimeList.net

Recommended Posts

So MyAnimeList.net has decided to bombard their userbase with untested advertisements (up to as much as 7 advertisements on some pages), many of which are video ads and/or play obnoxious and intrusive audio. While others go outside of your browser window width and cause you to have a horizontal scrollbar.

While adblock plus does actually block the ads, it doesn't do anything for the annoying boxes that pop up in place of most of the ads trying to convince you to disable your blocker. As a result, I've come up with filters that will block those boxes so you can view the site without anything obnoxious/intrusive.

Just add these to your filter list:

myanimelist.net##.mauto
myanimelist.net##.right_top_ad
myanimelist.net##.left_bottom_ad
myanimelist.net##._unit

Now, MyAnimelist.net may change their code up to make it display again for those blocking it this way, so if this stops blocking them, or you notice any issue, let me know and I'll update it.

^How about making a new filter for Nyaa? They decided to use their ad images file names as www- which is the same as their other images on the site.

I already did and posted it in another topic somewhere.

|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-4*.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-5*.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-6*.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-70.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-71.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-72.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-73.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-74.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-75.png

|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-77.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-78.png
|http*://files.nyaa.**/www-79.png

This will block them on http and https and on both .eu and .se tlds.

Alternatively, you could just do www-7*.png and whitelist the www-7.png file, but I didn't look up at the time how to add an exception so I just added the individual numbers instead. The www-7.png image is the download button on topic listing view so you want to not block it else you'd have to go into the torrent page to download which is a hassle.

Ah thanks, was too lazy to find all the ads.

@Koby @ZeroPenguins

For a more Stylish approach:

Install the Stylish addon for Firefox or Chrome.

Then install a theme for MAL or NYAA that blocks ads. :)

You can also search Userstyles.org if you don't like the ones I linked.

My Mal and Nyaa:

Edit: I also have the School/Romcom background/render pack installed on my MAL page. :D

Personally, not really a big fan of installing too many addons, but good option for other people who likes to customise CSS of a site.

What's too many? I'm only running 20 extra besides the default ones that come with Chrome.

No cookie management, userscripts, login manager or enhanced popup blocking? Damn, your web browsing must be painful.

All cookies are blocked unless I want them, no use in userscripts, don't need a login manager, and I don't get popups anywhere I go. So IDK what you're on about. You don't need to bloat your browser with stuff it's capable of doing already on it's own.

Neither Firefox nor Chrome effectively manage cookies. You can block them all, but then you're stuck manually editing your whitelist like a chump.

Use Vanilla Cookie Manager (or Self Destructing Cookies for Firefox). You can thank me later.

no use in userscripts,

A userscript's sole purpose is to be useful. They make websites more tolerable. Example: YouTube Center. I can understand if you cant find a use for them though.

Do you use secure, individual passwords for each site you visit?

Firefox has better popup blocking than Chrome, so Chrome needs an extra addon to get what the built in blocker doesn't.

If you were seriously concerned about bloat, you wouldn't be using Adblock Plus.

A web browser might be able to do all you password and cookie management, but it certainly doesn't do it well. But if you're content with it then I guess there isn't much I can say.

Well if anyone is curious; I have a password manager, cookie manager addon, ublock origin, flashblock, greasemonkey, enchanced steam and magic chrome actions for youtube on my browsers. I wouldn't call most of them bloat, in my opinion bloat is shit you don't need.

Adblock Plus is a piece of shit compared to ublock origin... Way less resources used on ublock origin.
