MKV and MP4 are containers. Typically both contain h264 video. If this video is 10-bit it'll need to be re-encoded, but if it's 8-bit it's very likely you can simply remux the video into a mp4 container. You can use MP4Box to do this; or if you need a GUI; Yamb seems to be the go-to program.

With HandBrake, it's extremely simple. You import your .mkv file, have the output set to .mp4, press Start , and you're good to go. ;)

This is usually pointless and degrades quality.

Rather than re-encode, a simple remux would be all that is needed 99% of the time when dealing with 8-bit h264 mkv.

Demux the streams from the mkv, and remux into mp4 using Yamb/MP4Box. Takes all of 5 seconds to complete.

Yamb: http://yamb.unite-video.com/

MP4Box: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/mp4box

Ā

Keep in mind MP4Box is a CLI, while Yamb is one of the many GUI's which utilize it. You don't need both.

CLI's are typically best, but unless you know how to use command-line; you're better off with the GUI.

Thanks!! :D and i don't know how to use the command-lines :/ so i'll get both! :D

Then you don't need to download MP4Box, as it's already within Yamb for it to utilize it.

As for actually remuxing to MP4, first you should demux the tracks you want to remux into mp4 (the audio track you want and the video). Demuxing them helps prevent errors.

Ā

I recommend MKVCleaver these days for extracting stuff from MKVs.

MKV Cleaver: https://code.google.com/p/mkvcleaver/downloads/detail?name=MKVcleaver_v0602.exe&can=2&q=

As you can see, on the right it gives you the options for what you want to extract. You may have to first locate MKVToolNix which can be done with the button above the track list.

Once you're done, you should end up with the separate tracks one in the format of the video and one in the format of the audio. In my example these were a .h264 file and a .aac file.

In Yamb click the "Editing" tab and select "click to join supported files".

Drag n drop your audio & video file into it.

Click next and it'll mux and be done.

Note, it may seem a bit excessive to get setup, but do take note that this method of turning it into mp4 requires NO re-encoding, so nothing has been altered. Encoded from a source that's already been compressed (encoded) only results in quality loss; so it's best not to re-encode unless absolutely necessary. Hence why I recommend the remux.

Download mkvtoolnix: http://www.fosshub.com/MKVToolNix.html

Install it, then in Yamb go to Settings and under the "Extractors" add the path to MKVExtract
