What kind of Viruse is is?

I have an old computer that I used to use, but it got a viruse, we sent it to get fixed, but they did not kow what kind of viruse it was, I was wondering if anyone here can help me figure it out.

What is wrong with your computer, if at first every now and then it has porn adds poping up and random web pages about buying stuff, even if you are not on the internet.

then once it has been a few months since it has done that, it has been working fine since then, when you turn the computer on, the screan is black with random numbers on the screan standing still, then the screan turns blue with a bunch of random numbers scrolling down the screan.

What kind of Viruse is that?

Sounds like it could be any form of Malware (specifically because of the ads) as well as something like a trojan horse. Are you still wanting to use this computer? if so then I would install AVG and Malwarebytes, scan the system and hard drive with both, remove anything that they detect and then go from there :)

Run malwarebytes, when it's done, run the free version of Hitman Pro.

Those two in conjuction will guarantee whatever it is, is removed and gone.

Otherwise, check your task manager for suspicious processes and google them to see what it's about. If it's a virus, kill it, search for the file and destroy it. If it doesn't let you delete it, then rename it instead then restart your pc and delete the file.

Either way, it'll be gone if you follow these steps.

Reinstalling OS usually helps. I suggest running  virus-scan utilities right after OS reinstallation. DrWeb CureIt works fine, but I'd advise to scan your system with several utilities just to be on the safe side.

More radical approach requires wiping all you hard drives and whatever portable storage devices you plug into this PC. Then do a clean install of OS

Don't forget to run your PC in 'Safe Mode', that tends to help most virus scanning programs I've run.

True, although in some cases I found that the "virus" doenst get run then because windows only loads the essentials. However the opposite has also happened and in some cases it has been removed :)

I would definitely call that a last resort!! Nothing better than that though.

Still, it's the only 100% guaranteed way to get rid of viruses. Anything short of secure wiping the drive leaves a chance for viruses to manifest themselves again.

LOL exactly!! Hence why I said that there is nothing better than doing that :P

One more thing I think I need to add, while it was blue with numbers scrolling down, right after it shut itself off, and won't turn on, it just stays a blach screan with the on button glowing.

Does that work on most versions of Windows XP?

Hmm still sounds like it could be the cause of the virus/malware doing that... sounds like the PC goes into hibernation?

Malwarebytes should work with any version of XP (see here down the left hand side under operating systems) and the same with AVG (see here down the left hand side under operating systems)

Sigh. Get a live CD of some Linux distro and backup your files. Then reformat. It will fix all of your problems.

Exactly this. Sounds like your computer got messed up big time, it will be easier for you just to wipe it and restart. Also if you aren't familiar with Linux, get a Ubuntu or Lubuntu live CD. They are a touch more user friendly

I agree with johnflower and llama, but I would add the step of creating an image of the entire drive with clonezilla first if you can. This will allow you to come back to it again if you ever realize there is something you forgot to copy. PartedMagic would usually be the go to distro I would recommend here, but the creator has started requiring a donation to download the distro. It's worth the price, but you could use any live distro that comes with gparted, and clonzilla.

Windows XP is also nearing end of life, so you may want to consider installing linux instead of re-installing XP. There are a few desktop environments that look similar to XP, so you should be able to find something that feels close to what your use to. As for which distro to install, I'd probably start with a buntu based distro if you're new to linux. The lubuntu that llama mentioned is a pretty decent distro, and xubuntu could also be worth a look. The Mate and Cinnamon versions of Mint are another two you may like. Out of the four I've listed, Cinnamon would be my preferred, but xubuntu may be a better option. You can find links to all of them and many others at distrowatch.com.
