Dude888
Today, I figured out that my Samsung TV can browse a USB stick or external hard drive for Videos, music and pictures. That is so awesome, I don't need to connect my pc with a HDMI cable anymore or to use an obscure method using networking and/or my Xbox. The TV software can even switch between the two audio tracks from a file. YES! MKV IS SUPPORTED!!!!!But there is a downside (as usual), not every video or audio codec are supported. There are some videos that I can't play at all and other that don't have audio. Right now I am trying to encode some episodes that didn't work earlier. If your TV has a USB port, you should definitely try to play videos. ZeroPenguins
Lol no surprise these days, newer TV have media centre in them and they support MKV. I still think the best media centre is plugging in a computer to your TV and using it.

I still think the best media centre is plugging in a computer to your TV and using it.Second this, because the TV plays MKVs now, but what about the future? What new media formats will be released? With a computer, you can install new codecs, but you can't with the TV.

lemmingllama
I prefer to just use a RGB cable and an audio cable to run my TV as another monitor. Its much easier to do and the only real problem is that MPC-HC tends to crash when moving from monitor to monitor
Cello
Mine can as well, yet for some reason it can't read my 500GB portable hard drive that I keep all of my Anime on, so I resort to using my hacked Wii.It's probably because I have it partitioned into different drive types and the TV can't read it.I did fix my hard drive the other day though, so it might work now. RikuoAmero
You can! My TV supports Software-updates via HD : )Probably firm-ware updates from the manufacturer and I wouldn't rely on them myself if I wanted my TV to be able to play new formats. The manufacturer may stop releasing updates. At least with a computer connected to the TV, you can install as many codecs as you want.

I have been struggling for days with my tv trying to get it to play the videos on my iPod =)No, unfortunately not. It's a HDTV with USB ports, though I imagine with a smart TV you could have it connect to a wireless household network connected to your PC and stream the files that way. I have no experience with smart TVs though, so i'm just talking out my rear at this point.I know there's TV boxes that can do that though, smart TV or not. Xanodus
I see. Because lately I've been trying to get my Blu-Ray dvd player to play videos from my iPod (it has an iPod connection thingo). But I need some sort of AV4 or HDMI cable. I think I am hoping for a miracle. Although, this tv seems like a great idea if I transfer my iPod videos to my USB. Reptoholic
I can play only off of my usb. Not from my hard drive. I plan on getting a new hard drive and I am hopping it will play off of it, if I set it right.

thegenius05
Connect the TV to your home network and install Serviio on one of you PC to host your media. Serviio can be configured to encode the video on the fly if your TV does not support it.
