CCCP vs CoreAVC vs MadVR

Hey guys! I'm doing a comparison for you guys on these three popular decoders for the H.264 codec. I have all three decoders installed on my computer, so I thought I might as well test it and see which one is the best.

From what I noticed CCCP (FFDShow), CoreAVC and MadVR are almost same in terms of quality, if you are outputting the file at its native video file resolution. As seen here:

For the 480p to 720p upscale you can notice a slight difference with MadVR (more sharper) and while CCCP and CoreAVC looks the same.

Wow I had a lot of issues uploading it to screenshot comparison >.> I hope you guys find this useful! Hopefully this will help you guys decide which decoder is the best to use. If you ask me, it doesn't really matter. It's all up to personal taste, since the difference between them is quite small in terms of quality. I'm sticking with CoreAVC for now (since it is a lot faster than FFDshow), but will use MadVR when upscaling. I'm keeping CCCP as well, because when I installed MadVR I didn't install audio decoders or any of those other stuff the MadVR needs since CCCP already offers them and I had it installed long before MadVR or CoreAVC.

Jeez it's like 3am here >.>

When I switched to madVR I was blown away by the color, and how sharp the blacks were compared to VLC.

Of course you would be.. considering VLC doesn't even play HD to start with...

Anyhow, CoreAVC isn't a free program. However with 8-bit it played quicker allowing crappier PC's to play HD files that couldn't handle them in the other renders. However with 10-bit CoreAVC is actually slower and not recommended at all. It's crap when it comes to 10-bit. It might look good, but it's causes extra un-needed load on the cpu.

MADVR was recommended at first over CCCP for 10-bit, however the reason for doing so has been solved and now there is absolutely no reason to bother with extra installation steps or confusing n00bs. The easiest method is still simply to install CCCP.

As for the sharpness, that can actually be adjusted in the settings as well.

By the looks of it, it seems like madVR is just a tiny bit more sharper than either CCCP or CoreAVC. But you could hardly tell the difference cause it's not by much.

But how did you manage to install all three on the same PC, I could have sworn they said you must clear out all the other decoders before installing either.

edit, Koby said it, the easiest to install is CCCP it's just a simple click, click and your done. Unlike madVR but it's worth it in the end.

Oh really? I didn't know that about CoreAVC, but most of what I have are in 8-bit so CoreAVC is more of a better option for me. MadVR does allow you to use different filters for sharpness, I will experiment with those and CCCP also offers extra settings through FFDShow. I should also note that I installed the latest version of each and all were with default settings, with only a few settings changed to allow me to take screenshots.

True, but you generally tell the difference between them if you upscale a lot more than what I did. And for installing three on the same computer, it is quite easy to do and very possible, those guides are for newbies so they tell you to uninstall all codecs so it won't conflict with each others. But if you know what to do, you can set each player to use a specific filter, it isn't a hard thing to do. I used FFDShow audio decoder with each of those and they were installed from CCCP.

I should note, this is really old shit here. This comparison was a test for people who installs and don't tweak settings. I don't think the images work anymore and also there has been a lot of changes to CCCP and a lot of improvements to MadVR.

Personally I just use MadVR + xy-VSFilter + FFDShow Audio filter and MPC-HC as my media player.

Ok see now im lost. I though the best video player is vlc. Its got all theses little tweeks that make using it nice. but i didnt like mpc since it wouldnt read subtitles all that well. So i read about it and apparently vlc is shit compared to a MPC-HC with madVR. I just wanna know how i can make it feel like VLC.
