Random Question: Lifeboat

Eh, a Random hypothetical question, because I'm bored.

So, you're in a situation where, say, among a small group of people it is obvious that either one person must be chosen to be sacrificed or else everybody will die. Doesn't matter what the situation is, its a hypothetical question.

It could be that after a plane crashed in shark infested water, you find a small lifeboat but you soon discover that there is a hole in the boat, but when there is less weight in the boat (I.E. if somebody were to be thrown to the sharks) that the boat would stay inflated long enough to hit land and the rest of the group would survive. Or you could be on a space station as one of 10 people where there is some kind of accident and there is only enough air to support 9 people until rescue arrives.

The question is, on what basis do you choose who must die, or there is the option for the entire group to die.

Will you choose the weakest, the dumbest, the oldest, draw straws (assuming some are available), or what?

Personally I'm against throwing anyone to the sharks so if it really came down to that and only 1 person needed to be cast out in order for the others to survive....I'd probably just sacrifice myself so the others can live..unless there's a complete asshole such as a wifebeater or some scum I'd toss him over >.>

It really depends on who those people are. If they're all strangers.. they're all getting tossed out. Well I'll probably keep one cuz I'll get bored. Whoever is the most optimistic and can laugh about it despite being in a bad situation lol Oh god, I'm evil.

If I know those people, then.. the most annoying one. In case I would be the most annoying one, then it's the runner up

I guess I have two priorities: First, Kill the asshole. You know who I am talking about. There's always one no matter where you are. Some stupid dickhead who's very existence is nothing but trouble for other people. I say kicking him would be the best. Second, On the unlikely chance that no one's an asshole, the elderly. Now if you got a grandma/granddad on the boat and end up saving them only to find that they got a heart attack the second they reached the shore, then that'd be just a face-palm! Logically speaking, these people have gotten through the prime of their life and it'd be a waste to sacrifice someone who needs to live in place of them. That's my pick on it.

That's a really hard one, well i would first conduct a survey of the people on the boat ask questions like.

1. If you manage to survive what are you going to do?what is your goal in life?why do you want to live so much?

2. What do you do for living?

3. Find out about the responsibilities the hold?e.g family, the world in general

4. If you had to make a wise what would it be?

Depending on there answers, hopefully there is one who has no life and before tossing him/her out ask them one thing that the would want me to do for them.

Asking questions is no good as people will lie to save them selves. Suddenly everyone has 10 kids, are a scientist just about to cure cancer and is working to bring about world peace.

I absolutely agree. Everyone will first be tempted to kill the person who seems like the scum of the earth. But I would first see if there was a way where it was possible to save everyone. Ex hole in boat so we strip one person and shove their clothing in the hole so itll last till we get to shore. But would still strip the asshole, or maybe the pretty girls

I pretty much agree with this and It also depends on if I know these people are not, and I'm gifted with seeing who a person is at a glance I don't know them completely but the aura's never lie. If it was my friends I would die for them. If it was strangers I would judge them and figure whither or not these people or wroth dying for or if someone deserves to die.

In the case of the ship example, I'd kill the fat guy. It might even give us a higher success rate in bringing the life boat to shore. In the case of the space ship. I'd go for the ass hole.
