The Note's Requiem, a KALS Short [short story]

“All around the world, people are dying. Nothing new about that, people die every day. What’s special about them? I’m killing them.

There’s only so much of injustice I can take anymore. The only choice I had left was to kill them and myself and no offense, but I’m much more important than them.

Light started this cycle and came very close to ending all the injustice in the world … but then you stepped in and killed him off like a dog.

Now you’ll learn just how wrong it was to try and go up against a God. I’ll be in touch.”

This is an original KALS work. KALS is the group dedicated to renewing and reinvigorating Kametsu's ailing Art and Literature section. We will be posting a wide variety of original shorts. In some cases, if the story is popular we will introduce character sign-ups where you can post your own character for a continuation of the short. So ..... PLEASE COMMENT!

Return of the Reaper [Chap 1 of 7]

Tokyo was quite hot that day. The kind of hotness that led to people repeatedly lift their pants into position and wipe their foreheads every half minute. The five FBI agents were no exception. The interior of the train cabin had an Air Conditioner but there was a certain thing between FBI officers and unknown electronic equipment that led to an anomosity between them. The three senior officers had taken the window seats while the two newbies were going over the deposition.

The youngest one, a red head named Jimmy Lancaster was going over a list of names of people, mostly known criminals who had been found dead a few days earlier -

Romulus Drake

Basack K. Lind

Shinji Nomura

Panjak Patel

James Radisson

Lionel Dudley

Osama bin Laden

"Osama bin Laden?", Jimmy raised an eyebrow.

"Is this serious or one of those inroductory pull-a-prank things you oldies like to pull on freshers?", the other lad, Sean Parker asked.

Jimmy bit his lip. Sean didn't realise who the three legends he had just called 'oldies' were.

"You'll find out soon enough kid.", one of the 'oldies' replied as he pulled out a lighter and a pack of cigarettes.

"Jesus Christ, open the window before doing that, Jack.", another 'oldie' said. This guy looks like he's been around since the Hoover age, Sean thought as gazed at his receding hairline and wrinkly face.

"Calm down, Mikey. You haven't got more than a couple years left anyway.", the third 'oldie' chuckled. He looked the youngest of the three legends but with a face covered with scars, he appeared the most experienced of them all.

"Shut your trap, Harry and have you forgotten the "No Names" rule already?", 'Mikey' snapped back.

"Oh, puh-lease,", Harry retorted. "I've seen people get killed in many ways but dying by having a name written in a notebook? Sounds like something out of a cartoon."

At that point, an announcement came that the train would be arriving at Tokyo in 15 minutes.

"Nearly there ...", Jimmy mused. "Who were we to contact again?"

"Dunno.", Jack said whilst looking out the window. "The only thing the director told me was that it was some genius kid detective who'd gone against this type of thing before."

"DEFINITELY something outta a cartoon.", Harry rolled his eyes.

"I wouldn't say that Harry." Jack turned around and for the first time, Jimmy noticed it - the emptiness in his eyes. So the rumors were true. "It would explain all these deaths, plus I remember there being something similar happening a few years back, near the '12 Massacre' ..."

"I'm surprised someone like you would believe those rumors. I checked it out myself. Those 'agents' never existed. It was probably a cult suicide or something."

"Not necassarily.", Jimmy said. Both Jack and Harry turned around to face the newbie.

"You got something you wanna add, kid?", asked Harry stressing the 'kid' word.

Jimmy blushed a shade of red. "Just that those records can be easily altered. Almost everything is wired completely to the Director's Server and ..."

"And the director shamelessly covered the death of 12 agents whilst not controlling the news. Brilliant deduction, Holmes!", Harry mocked.

"Quit the arguing, we're here.", Mikey said, putting together the dossiers.

"Whatever", Harry picked up his stuff. "This is sure to be some kind of dead end anyways. Notebook that kills people ... puh-lease. Next you'll tell me about 7 balls that grant wishes or eyes that make people do one's will."

They're heeeerre ...

"I know. They won't last long."

Getting overconfident, eh? You know, that's how your predecessor ended up dying.

"Ah yes, you'd know all about that, you killed him after all."

Well, you can't blame me, he'd gotten sooo pathetic near the end, beggi ...

"That's enough!"

Touchy touchy ...

"He made some minor mistakes ... mistakes I don't intend to repeat."

Well, you certainly have one thing he didn't have ... or should I say ... two?

The figure in the shadows smiled as he looked across the people exiting from the train, a bunch of numbers and letters appearing above their head.

"Yes, that too."

Thanks for the comments, guy. I'm on a roll with this one -

The New God [Chap 2 of 7]

"I ... C ... P ... O ...", Harry said slowly to the local Japanese man. "It's one of the most important buildings in this hell hole of a city. How could you not know where it is?"

"Shitsurei shimashita?", the man said.

"I give up.", Harry threw his hands in the air. "Bloody japanese gibberish."

"Lemme give it a shot ...", Sean said.

"Oh great, pretty boy's gonna miraculously start speaking japanes ..."

Sean took out his cell phone and tapped a few keys.

"Um ... Dono ICPO no tatemono e no michi?", he said to the man.

"Ā, chōdo maui-gai kara kaku o magatta.", the man replied.

"Maui Street, is it? Thank you very much." Sean turned back to his comrades who had an amazed look on their faces.

"Google Translate,", he explained. "Never leave home without it."

Jack chuckled. "Seems the newbies are leaving you behind, Harry."

"Yeah yeah, whatever.", Harry fumed. "Where's this Mao street anyways?"

"Maui.", Jimmy corrected.

"Beg your pardon?"

"It's called Maui Street. With a U-I."

"Just ... get in the damn car.", Harry said exasperately as their limos arrived. "I had 2 of them brought up since the Bureau's gonna be paying for it anyways."

"Limos ...?", Mikey stared at the two luxuriously decorated stretch cars in front of them.

"Mike ...", Jack went up to the oldest man and whispered something in his ear that was indistinbguishable to the other three.

Mikey nodded. "Understood". He turned to Sean, Jimmy and Harry. "Jack and I will be going ahead. There's something we need to take care of on the way. Jack, you take these two and get to the contact point."

"BABY SITTING DUTY!?", Harry's eyes widened. "What the ... I refuse!"

"Two to One, motion declined, Harry.", Jack grinned as he got into the first car. "Don't worry. We won't take more than an hour."

And so Harry was on baby sitting duty with the two interns. While it may have been bad for Harry, it was even worse for the two newbies. The lighting in the car possibly made his scars look even more hideous.

"So what's the deal with the sc ...", Sean started to say.

"A little punk asked me what they were for and I beat the crap out of him.", Harry said quickly.

"That doesn't answer the ques ...", Jimmy argued.

"Hush Jimmy. Follow the man's words of wisdom.", Sean stopped him.

"Why'd I get stuck with this anyways? Where are those two idiots at?", Harry mumbled.

"So you were ...", Jack coughed up blood.

"Yep.", the figure in black answered.

"I don't get it ... why?", he said, struggling to keep standing, placing both hands on the walls in the alley.

"I have my reasons ... you should have stayed away, Jack."

Jack coughed up more blood. "You won't get away with this."

"Old friend ... I already have, now that you're dead. I'm sorry it had to end this way."

And with that, Jack Douglas, Age 37 fell to the ground, Cause of Death - Ruptured artery.

Your best friend? If i had to say, I'd say you're even more ruthless than him.

"I didn't want to do it ... But I had no choice."

There are still a few more left, you know.

The figure smiled. "Yes, those will be more easy. Let's go."
