If they had merged the after story ending with the movie ending both Nagisa & Ushio had died then it would have been the saddest thing ever =(. For the former I would say that Legend of the Galactic Heroes has some of the saddest moments, and as for ending Grave of the Fireflies is up there, but I'll have to hand it to Jin-Roh which I personally prefer.
