Winds of Gaia

My Final Fantasy fever has never been as high as it is right now. I've been re-playing FF-IX lately and i've come up with an original Fantasy story.

The world it's set in will be a combination of several worlds from the Final Fantasy series. I won't be using any Final Fantasy characters since this is an original story.

Hence, like the other stories, i'll be using the system of character sheets (yes Rune, I copied yours ;D) :-

Name – Pretty standard.

Race – The races in this world are diverse and include : Human, Elf, Dwarf, Beast, Humanoid Bots, Divine Beasts and Moogle. Feel free to add a new race if you wish but give a small description of it, like it's characteristics that separate it from the rest. No hybrids, please.

Class – The various classes available in this world are : Warrior, Black Mage, Thief, Red Mage, White Mage, Blue Mage, Monk, Ninja, Summoner, Black Belt, Paladin, Mime, Dragoon, Samurai, Chemist, Necromancer,Ranger.

Phew, that was a long list. Anyhoo, you can take your pick.

Status – Choices are : Royal, Middle-class, Slave, Merchant, Bandit, Traveller, Sailor, Pirate, Worker, Rebel.

And now, time for a small prologue …

Prologue – The Clouds of War Stir …

The world of Gaia had been at peace for several centuries now. The last great war had concluded with many bodies covering the battlefields and all kingdoms desperately low on supplies.

However, the pride of those royal lineages went deeper than their loyalty towards their subjects and the war continued raging, until one day …

No one knew his name or description. The only news that ever reached villages was that a mysterious figure ravaged across the battlefield late at night and utterly massacred all soldiers present..

This went on for many weeks and finally came to the notice of the Royal families when reports came of the figure being sighted near all 3 kingdoms at the same time.

Who was this person? Was he man or beast? Was he the devil himself come to rampage on Gaia for their heretic behavior?

Whoever he be, this person was the reason why all soldiers were recalled from the battlefield, thus putting an end to the conflict.

Peaceful negotiations were held and treaties signed up to ensure that war never struck again … or was at least postponed for a while.

No one knows who the mysterious being was … just that he was the one responsible for the end of their war. Now, peace reigns over Gaia but the bones of the fallen warriors grow restless under the ground and the pride of the new Royals threaten to destroy the peace that has been kept for all this while.

The Clouds of War gather …

Here's a little something to start things up, give you guys an idea of the story.

Chapter 1 : Just another day …

“Come on, ya maggots!”, the instructor of Alexandria High bellowed at the 53 students struggling to cross a tar pit. “How the hell are weaklings like you ever gonna protect the kingdom!”

His long wavy beard, which was white as snow rustled in the wind. They were in the obstacle course of the Battleyard, where the newest batch of trainees were undergoing their first of many physically exhausting tests, to ensure that they would be able to uphold the law of their great nation.

Some students were finding it harder than others to cross the great pit, which covered 3 miles in length and 35 feet in depth. The students had to use the full force of their strength just to keep from sinking into the deep abyss, let alone getting to the other side.

The first casualty occurred 20 minutes into the test – A young boy, no longer able to keep his body moving, succumbed to fatigue and began to slowly sink …

“DAGNABIT!”, the instructor swore. He had been hoping to get one batch through this year without getting his clothes dirty.

He walked slowly towards the edge of the pit, his robes dragging on the floor behind him. He lifted his staff towards the sky and then brought it down towards the ground with force, aiming the tip at a small circular hole.

The tar in the pit began to vibrate, and the waves emanating became larger and larger until …

SPLASH!!!

A giant whale of a creature emerged from beneath the surface at the edge. The creature was almost 20 feet long, with scales covering its body and gills along it's side. It resembled a common salmon fish in every sense except one – At the place where should have been it's fins, there were giant bear claws and in one of those claws was the student, his eyes wide with astonishment.

“Stupid Reya!”, the instructor yelled, wiping the tar from his face. “How many times do I gotta tell ya to bank at the other side!? Now the little bastard has to cross all over again.”

The boy shook himself free from the creature – Reya's claws and spat at the instructor's feet.

“Screw this!”, he growled. “I'm leaving. You can take your precious kingdom and shove it right up your …”

Before he could finish his sentence, a shout came from the other side and the instructor looked across in amazement. Five of the students had already crossed over. He had in all his life as a teacher never seen any newbie cross the Tar Pit in under 2 hours.

The boy took advantage of the old man's distraction and sprinted towards the “Gate”.

The Gate was the only way out of Alexandria. The entire kingdom was surrounded by mountains on the East and West side and the ocean on the North side. The borders were always under strict guard and the children had only dreamed of what lay beyond them … for when they grew up, it was mandatory for them to choose a trade as a merchant or a solider.

Today however, the guards at the Gate were slacking off. Both of them weren't standing guard. They had probably decided to take a leak at the same time and had left the Gate unguarded for those precious few minutes during which the boy ran towards them with all his might, ignoring the ache in his bones, desperate for escape …

The instructor turned his eyes back to the boy, ready to give him a strict lecture, when he saw him halfway towards the Gate and his eyes widened.

No one was allowed to go beyond it for good reason.

The man shouted after the boy, yelling at him to stop but the boy didn't listen. The man gave chase. Despite his old age, his physical health was better than most middle-aged men. He had almost caught up to the boy by the time they reached the Gate.

The Gate, with all it's grandeur stood mightily in front of the training guild. With it's gold adornments, it was ironic that it held such terrors beyond it.

“NOOOOOOOO!!!”, the old man yelled in agony, arriving just a second too late. He had almost caught the lad before the boy gathered his last reserves of energy and tore through the Gate.

There the old man stopped for he knew what lay beyond and what would happen to those who crossed it.

He looked at the boy with almost pleading eyes but the boy ignored him and walked away from the accursed home where he had always felt trapped.

That night, when everyone had gone to sleep, the old man stayed by the Gate with the 2 guards, hoping that the boy would return safely.

All that they received was a howl that echoed across the valleys, followed by a scream of agony. Then ... silence.

With that, the old man returned home, the knowledge in his heart that he was still out there. The “Messenger from God”, the “Lord of Demons”, the “Arbitrator of Heaven”, the man who had slaughtered countless people many years ago was still out there.
