It's a tossup between Sango from Inuyasha, and Winry from FMA.

Reasons? Both of them are strong female characters with well established personalities. Both are often shown to be stronger than the male characters in the right situation.. Even if it is just knocking said male out with a wrench. Both can do things that no one else around them can do as well.

Hmm two which come to mind would be CC from Code Geass and Rukia from Bleach. Without them the series would fall apart imo
