2BfUBXQ.jpgThe 12th and final episode of Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) aired on Friday ended with an announcement that a second season for the anime series is in production. The new season is planned for a 2020 premiere.

Yakusoku no Neverland adapts Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu's fantasy thriller manga of the same title, which began its serialization in Weekly Shounen Jump in August 2016. Shueisha published the 13th volume on March 4. The manga has a cumulative 10 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation worldwide.

VIZ Media released the first three chapters of the manga in English in their digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, at the same time as Japan, as a part its Jump Start initiative before adding the series to its regular lineup. The company's new Shounen Jump service now publishes the manga simultaneously with its Japanese release digitally. The eighth volume went on sale on February 5, with the ninth volume scheduled for an April 2 release.

Yakusoku no Neverland was nominated consecutively in the 10th and 11th editions of the annual Manga Taisho award, as well as the 22nd Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and won the 63rd Shogakukan manga award for shounen manga last January. The series also placed first in male readers category in the 2018 Kono Manga ga Sugoi rankings.
