† LimitLess
No, then they'll just think it's for Pervs. However, more mature anime's should convince them, not hentai but seinen type, like Elfen Lied and so on. PinoyRecca
Why does anime have a bad wrap in the public eye? Isn't it like basic human psychology? In general, the internet community especially trolls, don't like what we like Then there's the hate for anything that's really popular/overblown (ie. pop culture) And of course, there's the "band wagoners", who love to hop the bandwagon and join in on the hate or the flame wars, just cause, idk, it gives them a sense of self-satisfaction of joining the winning team. It's the same with the console wars (Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsoft) In general, it's Japan that's the big one, right? Anime is pretty much born from there, but to my knowledge, in Japanese society, anime is viewed as something for kids, and your seen ss being childish if you still watch anime when you get older. Then there's the stereotypes, like Otakus and N.E.E.T.'s that don't exactly help the situation either...
Dragooon
Anime and Manga to the general public is seen either as child's cartoons or porn. So you either get the people that say "Aren't you too old for anime?.." and then the people that say "You watch anime? You mean that cartoon porn?.." My parents think anime is just Pokemon. Though, My little sister has started watching Black Butler, Blue Exorcist and Soul Eater. My parents are starting to slowly see there is more anime than pokemon and dragonball. AdamEve
Elfin Leid is one of the reasons Anime HAS a bad rap. It is terrible, over the top violence with no purpose other than to shock and horrify. There is a LOT of anime that is wonderful, and i think many esp in the west have little idea of the depth of the wide range of anime subjects and the amazing work that goes into most of it. It is a wonderful and huge body of literature that has just amazing things to enjoy in so many ways. It takes time to learn to be able to enjoy subbed anime if you are not fluent in Japanese, but it opens up a vast amount of great content that is not dubbed and never will be probably. good topic, will go back and read more of the comments soon. Edder
I used to be ashamed to say i watch anime, because the classic reaction was "you mean that cartoon porn?" After this the long ass conversation would start to try and educate these poor ignorant souls that there is a big difference between hentai and anime. i think if they would just watch a proper anime series with an open mind they could be shown the light, but of course theses people approach the anime with a negative mind set, so its impossible to convince them most of the time. But as i have grown older, i have been inclined to care less what others think of my hobbies. I will always love and watch anime. i no longer care about saying i watch it in conversation. and sometimes you even get the random person jumping into your conversation when he hears you are talking anime. that always makes my day. I have nothing against any mainstream anime. if i enjoy it, then i watch it. no matter how popular it is. i think we should also show more gratitude towards mainstream anime, as this is usually my go to anime to convert non anime fans into big ass anime fans. iv digressed from the actual question though.... i guess its just seen as something for children. i find this very narrow minded, as there are many cartoons for adults and some anime are definitely not made for children. You're telling me these people haven't watched DBZ. That's like the most popular anime in history(even though most consider it a cartoon)

TRUNKSvsCELL
As lots of you are eluding to, it has to do with not wanting to be called a nerd. That's only because they don't realize a nerd is basically just a high level enthusiast and chances are they are already nerds. They too often mix dorks and nerds up. It's a common misconception. I also believe nerds and geeks to be the same thing. People will always argue with me but thy are basically the same thing. † LimitLess
There are many things that can label you as a nerd. Gaming, math, glasses or porn. Does watching at least one anime make you a nerd? If they think so, then they're nerds themselves cause chances are they've watched DBZ orYu gi oh or pokemon or all three. Just tell them that. That's what I did, they couldn't say shit after that.
