I like to use VLC Player for everything but .rm, .rmvb, .flv, .ivr, and .swf files. It works flawlessly with almost any type of video format as well as.mp3s. The only dowsides are that you can't make automatic screenshots/thumbnails and (in version 2.0 and newer only),when you fast forward videos, it also still plays the sound (whereas in the old versions, it was silent while fast forwarding). Also, when you have movies that have optional subtitles/soft subtitles, you can turn them on or off at any point without having to reset and re-option whether subs are on or off (like MPC-HC makes you do). I only use MPC-HC to take screenshots, and play .swf files. Other than those 2, I use Realplayer only for .ivr and .rm, .rmvb files, nothing else. As for .flv files, I just don't download those. So, to put it simply, VLC is my preferred media player by far, no other player compares to it, in my opinion, but hey...that's just me.
