Okay so last year there were A LOT of great games released but only some of them really measured up what we expected, so here's a place for you to drop a vote and maybe leave a comment as to why you did. I'm going off well known games for this and if I happen to miss one I will add it to the vote so dw if you can't vote for the one you want, just let me know it's missing. I'll be covering both xbox 360 and ps3 so I'm not biased to either.

I put down all the games I think are pretty popular and no pc specific titles, so no diablo 3 etc.

Vote away and let's see what Kametsu rates as the highest =)

Isn't Skyrim last year ...?

Also, personally, most of the sequels were a bit of a disappointment. I went in expecting fantastic/amazing things and ended up getting average/terrible stuff. Darksiders 2, AC3, Resident Evil 6, Prototype 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 were terrible disappointments. And you can include Mass Effect 3 in there as well if I wanna start ranting about BioWare selling out to EA with the ending.

That said, here's a couple games that kinda flew under the radar but were pretty damn fun to play, more so than the ones i mentioned above -

Asura's Wrath

Binary Domain

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

Journey (Can't believe this isn't on the list >.<)

Shoot Many Robots

Sine Mora

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Skullgirls

Legend of Grimrock

Fez

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet

Sniper Elite v2

Street Fighter x Tekken

Diablo 3 (even though I personally hated it)

Starhawk

Dragon's Dogma (OMG! sweet combat)

Ys Origin

Lollipop Chainsaw

Spec Ops: The Line

Kingdom Hearts 3D

Orcs Must Die! 2

Persona 4 Arena

The Last Story

Papa & Yo

Dust: An Elysia Tale (XBLA only for now. damn us ps3 boys.)

Guild Wars 2!

FTL

Torchlight 2

Tokyo Jungle

Mark of the Ninja

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams

Hotline Miama

Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

...

and SO MUCH MORE!

But well, from that list, I'd pick XCOM. I had so much fun in that game. Specially when my hot Vanguard chick would run up to those aliens and delivers two shotgun shells in quick succession. *sigh* R.I.P. Lt. "Hardcore" Kanyakumari.

I usually play games after they've been out for centuries. D:

Same. I'm really slow about picking up new games--it takes me ages to build enough interest in a game to want to begin playing it. Like, Skyrim came out late 2011, and I didn't start playing that until a few months ago, haha. Pretty much the only thing I buy as soon as it comes out are Sims expansions.

I played a little of Torchlight 2 when it came out because it was gifted to me, but I wasn't super into it. I feel like they don't really make games that cater to my gaming style anymore, haha.

I haven't played any of these games, ack. I usually play games after they've been out for centuries. D:

My favorite game that came out this year was Just Dance 4. I actually think it's the only 2012 game I have.

@Nero: I'm intrigued by this game called "Fez."

Just Dance 4 is pretty sweet, even though I highly encourage people to keep me the hell away from it all times to prevent room disasters.

And yeah, Fez is interesting to say the least. The concept of the game, controlling a 2D character in a 3D cube world sounds pretty fun and it's implemented quite well also. I'm a bit jealous of 360 owners cuz of this title which is currently XBOX exclusive as well as of Dust: An Elysian Tale but I hope they at least make it to Steam soon.

I started Skyrim as soon as it came out last year on an *ahem* unofficial-ish version provided by a certain Mr. Skidrow, played for an odd 60 hours, having a shit-ton of fun in an open world while burning everything away and then forgot about it. I recently ended up buying the actual game on Steam along with the Dawnguard DLC but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

And yeah, these days the big companies are focusing a lot more on the "general" fanbase which seems to be made out of mostly competitive shooters. I recommend trying out Giana Sisters and Mark of the Ninja, if you can. I played them around a month back and they were the most fun games I've played all winter.

Giana Sisters has this kick-ass platforming mechanic where you can switch between two personas of a girl at any time to gain access to a variety of movesets - a cute twirling one and a bad-ass firebombing one. The best part comes in the BGM which switches seamlessly between electric guitar and piano everytime you switch characters. A real throw-back to the classic platformers.

Mark of the Ninja is my dream game finally come to life. It's what I always wanted a proper Ninja stealth game to be and it delivered. The animations are fluid, there's multiple ways to get through levels and the A.I. makes Dishonored wanna jump in the ocean. (No offence to Dishonored, it's a great game and all but that A.I.'s just ridiculously retarded. I punched a guy once and hid down an alleyway and he followed me till the alley and then buggered-off.)

Yeah Skyrim was last year, Now 11th, so close to the end of the year I guess I forgot. Also as I said I only put in popular titles. I didn't include pc titles because there's too many and I only did the xbox 360 and ps3. I'll remove Skyrim and throw up Just Dance 4 instead, since it was a pretty cool game and I despise dancing haha.

@Nero The list you threw up does have some pretty fun games on there, I picked up most of them in the steam christmas sale or one of the previous ones lol. I'd make a pc game of the year poll but I get the feeling that may turn out horribly messed up since I'm not really up to date with pc, imagine the skyrim mishap but 20 times lol. Maybe an idea for you? You seem to know all the pc titles and whatnot

Granted that I haven't played most of these, from what I have played Mass Effect 3 was my favorite.

To be honest, I don't think 2012 was a good year for games at all. And some I was actually hyped up for! T_T

I don't think as Nero said, many of the sequels that there was a lot of hype about lived up to what the community expected and where a bit of a letdown. It still had some good games though, I thoroughly enjoyed far cry 3

I like dancing games, but no one ever wants to play them with me and it's weird to play them alone, haha. Maybe I'll start this year, just to spite the cats. I also got DDR for my Wii, sooooooo...

Make Java play with you or your room mate, force them with your womanly powers. You know, I'll kick you in the crotch if you dont DANCE WITH ME RIGHT NOW! and all that lol :P

D: I bolded a few of the games that I thought peaked my interest that Nero mentioned. A lot of the games this year really were let downs because I was expecting so much more out of them. I guess nothing special happens for my highschool graduation year =C The Last Story however imho has AMAZING artwork. If anything; games with beautiful artwork deserve more spotlight then they ever get. Edited by Kasoivc

I picked up Sleeping Dogs for X360 to give my brother for Christmas on Black Friday. $24ish and it came with DLC I believe. He played it and told me it was like Saints Row :/ I don't really care much for Sandboxy / Grand Theft Auto kind of games very much because I think they're always lacking. When I bought it, I thought it was going to be a torch bearer and successor to Shenmue... T_T God damn, they need to shell that out. SEGA FFS, YOU'RE STILL FLOATING OUT THERE, MAKE IT ALREADY. MAKE IT THE GOTY OF 2013.
