MCV Says Next Xbox Won’t Feature A Disc Drive, Launching Next Year

Although it’s not strictly Nintendo related news, MCV is reporting that the next Xbox console won’t come equipped with a disc drive, and will launch sometime next year. If true then the next Xbox will be the worlds first console to forgo a disc drive in favour of downloadable games. I’m sure GameStop and GAME won’t be too pleased with this news.

The briefings have been issued under what MCV’s source describes as “the strictest NDA” they have ever encountered.

Although the console will not include a disc drive, it will offer compatibility with some sort of interchangeable solid-state card storage, although it is not known whether this will be proprietary or a more standard format such as SD.

Furthermore, a 2013 launch date for the hardware has been confirmed. What is less clear, however, is the intended timing of Microsoft’s announcement.

Well, They will lose their entire third-world client base as our internet is very slow and expensive. Not to mention the first question every gamer always asks about a new console is: "is it backwards compatible?".

I hope they do do this so they can get hit hard and Sony can again take their rightful place as undisputed #1. :D

It will go down if they do this. The backwards compatibility wouldn't really be possible without a disc drive, though. Otherwise, they would only have support for what you could actually download on the Xbox and X360, which isn't even 1/4 of all games released on either console. Another flaw with this is that the people getting it would be REQUIRED to have XBOX LIVE, whether they wanted to pay for it or not. With how the economy is in the US, at least, it wouldn't last long at all, before Microsoft would have to either add a disc drive and offer free replacements OR pull out of console gaming for good. Many people can't download such large games (internet connection speed), may not have internet access, etc. There is also the problem with space. For those that like getting a lot of games for systems, the person would have to download the game to the storage device and have to keep buying new storage devices to store the games they get, which you don't have to worry about with discs, since the majority of the data is on the disc. When it does install data from the disc, you can delete it, usually with no problems with lost progress, and re-install it when you want to play it again. With a totally online market for gaming, they would probably have to make it to where you could only download one copy of a game after paying for it and any additional downloads would cost full price again. That would prevent piracy and the like with a solely online distribution system, but would be bad for the consumer.

How would it prevent piracy? All one would have to do is download it the one time, and jailbreak the console. Be very careful about throwing around phrases like "prevent piracy", it simply can't be done. At best, you can delay it, but only with extremely anti-customer DRM. The very fact that the data needs to be copied at some point means you can't 100% prevent someone from copying it in an unauthorized fashion.

its a lie. the 360 is to be a ten year console. this was said many times. so 2014 is when we might c word of a new console.theres no market for a new console anyway. also i would trust Nintendo news with 360 info.

must agree with kashem here. Microsoft has mentioned new consoles to XBM and the likes, but they have never mentioned it having no disc tray as far as I've seen, and have always said sometime after the last quarter of 2013....so early 2014 would be the earliest. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with in truth, and how they'll integrate the kinect system into the gaming function....meh, guess we'll have to wait and see.

That sentence is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.

Oh yay! ^_^ That's good. There were unreliable rumours floating around that the next xbox will be released like next year and be just as good as the ps3, forcing Sony to do a rush-job on their next console. Now I feel better.

Anyway, I also don't think Microsoft would be that thick. And it's good to know America's also having problems. It sometimes feels like American companies forget about the poor countries. Like the PS Vita's 3G function is practically useless here, as well as its promoting of inter-vita communication. Too few ppl can afford it. In fact, I only know like 5 people irl other than myself that have a ps3!

Btw, am I correct in saying the psp-go was download only?

The PSP-Go was download only, but they learned their lesson after that. They haven't made a download-only system since then and have no desire to.

It's too early for download only games not everyone's internet connections are up to that standard and SD cards are going back in time imo.

SD Cards are going back in time for space limits, but I think they actually mean SSD, which still has less capacity than a regular hard drive, but much faster and more expensive.

This, I have also heard that the 360 was to be a 10 year console. I have heard reports that the new console will likley be release or announced 2015. I know 2014 would be more likley but I read somewhere awhile ago about a 2015 date. And the idea of not having a disc tray would suck, sure it wouldnt affect me to greatly seeing as I have good internet and get a lot of downloads per month, but for those who have no internet, slow internet or very minimal downloads per month would find getting games over xbox live horrible and microsoft would lose a great deal of support.

I don't believe it, most of the world is not ready for a discless platform. Broadband internet is not available in many locations and those that do often have caps in place. Even the folks at Microsoft are not stupid enough to realize this or ignore failure that was the PSP go.

I don't really believe it either, but that could just be the hope I have that it's not true. Call me old fashioned, but I always prefer owning physical copies of books, games, etc. rather than digital, and the reasons vary by medium. Books, for example, I like being able to sit down and read without straining my eyes (as all the ereaders and computer software I've tried make me do after a while), plus I just like the feel of the book as I read. Games, I actually like reading the manual that comes with the games (perhaps my biggest disappointment as far as Arkham City goes was the lack of one) before playing, and during load screens (or waiting on pals to hop on the game to play).

So yeah, I'd prefer all consoles to have a way of playing physical games. It almost feels like digital only things punish people that don't have a good (or any) internet connection :P I'd probably end up grabbing one that didn't, simply for any exclusives that may come out (assuming there are any that interest me, otherwise I'd pass) but to be honest it'd probably end up in the same shape as my 360: Lying in the corner unused.

I agreee with you on that in so many ways. I always buy proper copies of what ever I'm playing, or reading etc. I really don't like having to resort to piracy most times, partly because of my indecent internet connection. If it did come true about the whole sans disc tray then microsoft will lose one of their longest standing customers...and my faith. Please, no psp go fiasco, especially not with a homr console.

One thing they could do to make it backwards compatible without a disk drive, and without making you pay for all of your games again.. integrate a barcode scanner. You scan the barcode for your older game, it begins downloading a free copy to that system's emulator, when it's done, you play ^_^

Personally though, I think this is just Nintendo trying to get more customers to buy the next Wii thing instead of the next Xbox thing.
