How to play Legend of Zelda?

So yeah, I've never played any of the Legend of Zelda games ... ever.

*waits for fanboy/girl rants to die down*

Anyways, I have access to just about every console and handheld right now so I was hoping to finally get started on this mega franchise.

But, I don't really wanna start all the way from the very first Zelda top-down game.

So, if any mega Zelda fan could tell me which games to play to get the most out of the story and gameplay, I'd greatly appreciate it.

So I would say that starting off with Orcarina of Time is the best intro. Probably the best Zelda game in existance and explains most of whats going on, plus has all the standard items that you will find. Now, either play Majora's Mask or The Windwaker next, both are also superb but a little different. After that, try either Oracle of Ages or Seasons. Really after that it doesnt matter, the earlier ones dont really have any continuity and the newer ones can be played with that base without problems. The timeline is here if you are interested

If you want to play them chronologically(Although this is technically impossible since there are three paths) you could start with Skyward Sword as it takes place before Ocarina.

I'd certainly recommend playing Ocarina, although I feel it's a little over-hyped. Windwaker was my favorite, but you should play at least ONE of the others before Windwaker. As for me at least, it feels like it wouldn't have the same meaning if you don't play one of the previous games.

Right, so from the answers I've got so far, I assume I should abso-frigging-lutely start off with Ocarina of Time and then make my way through Windwaker, Majora Mask, Twilight Princess, Oracle of Time and the newly released Skyward Sword?

Thanks a bunch, guys. Time to plough my way through the Zelda franchise.

Windwaker was completely terrible imo. I traded it in at GameStop after less than 10 minutes of gameplay.

While I'm sure less than 10 minutes is an over-exaggeration I would like to point out that most Zelda games don't pick up in terms of story and gameplay until after the first 30 - 60 minutes. Usually the first hour is tutorial and getting link out of his secluded hometown. So dropping it after the first 10 minutes seems rather silly(especially considering you probably haven't even gotten off the first island by that point).

I'm probably being defensive since Windwaker was my favorite in the series, but w/e to each their own.

I say start with Link to the Past on the GBA or SNES. I'm one of the people who didn't really like OoT when I played it a few years ago. I might give it another try soon. You may want to start with it too as it's the most critically-acclaimed title in the series, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

i wouldnt play skyward sword first, mainly because its the newest and it explains the origins of the legend. youd need to understand what it refers to by playing Oot for sure first, then you could play windwaker and twilight princess because they are different branches of the timeline. i would play twilight princess after skyward sword:

because in that timeline, the events of Oot never passed beyond link being a child because he is sent back in time to turn ganon in, thus leading to the events of TP happening almost directly after skyward sword.
