What type of anime titles do you prefer, the ones where the name is the main character, like Naruto, or where the name closely relates to the anime, like One Piece, or where the name has little relation to the anime, like Ghost in the Shell.

Personally, I prefer when the name is closely related, since most of my favourite animes fit in this category and then I dont have to pronounce funky japanese names as much.

Hey, the name Ghost in the Shell has fair amount of relation to the anime. Even though I have not, yet, checked out the series, but the name is, in my judgement, apt and appropriate to the movies. Oh, and I also prefer when the name of the anime is in relation with the anime. I'm not particularly a fan of a name like "Naruto" because, well, it causes trouble when you're actually searching for the character on the internet and you eventually get yourself the anime's results.

Ghost in the Shell is never really mentioned in the anime. They occasionally make reference to it, but it is never a real part of the plot or affect the characters.

Hmmmm, if I remember correctly, wasn't it like ghosts (like souls) trapped inside a shell (a body) or somethin'? At any rate, that was my dilemma. Beh, I don't remember exactly as I didn't pay much attention to the movie plus I was watching too much stuff back then.

Yes, however the whole thing about ghosts and souls is never actually used in the anime, except for a concept of downloading ghosts onto the internet. So it doesnt really relate to the anime much

Actually your wrong on that. Ghost in the shell is a symbolic reference made to the entire concept that makes the first movie. I can imagine that when the produced the movie they didn't know that it would be that popular other wise they would have named it something more easy like "Section nine" or "Cyborg 9". If you watch the original movie you see what I mean. Stand alone complex leaves some of the original cannan behind so the title loses some of its meaning.

In the original show Motoko was never human she was and always is a machine. "Ghost in the shell" is a reference to ghost as in soul and shell as in machine. The show depicts the struggle of Motoko's self identity and a great humanization and emphasis of self awareness. Despite all odds I think there for I am.

But you shouldn't take me on that, you should watch it for yourself if you haven't already. Its a great movie.

As far as I know all animes have some meaning withen the title that relates to the show, even if we don't know it. Take Durarara, the name comes from Dollars the name for them was chosen from "dara dara" (meaning "no use" or "not doing anything") pretty sneaky huh

doesnt much matter to me, titles are titles

the show makes the title

not the title makes the show.

I pretty much just agree with this.

Admittedly I do find a sense of joy in decrypting a title to uncover its actual relevence with the anime, but the title isn't of much importance to me other than to make the anime identifiable somehow, as is a title's main purpose I guess.
