Daniel Hunt is a genius. Plain and simple. Many people see him as kind, warm, good looking and popular. This belies his cold, calculating and ruthless nature that saw him become Military Tactical Adviser of Balamb at the age of 15, despite being a poor orphan. However, the corruption and appalling attitude of the Balamb government and royal family to the people, led him to quitting just a year into the job. The Chinese invaded and overthrew Balamb and now a group of ex soldiers have seeken out Daniel, who is still only 18, in hopes that he will lead them to a glorious rebellion over the vast power of the Chinese. However, there is one problem. Daniel has no interest in their plans. This short will follow Daniel as various people try to persuade to take on the role of a resistance leader.

This is an original KALS work. KALS is the group dedicated to renewing and reinvigorating Kametsu's ailing Art and Literature section. We will be posting a wide variety of original shorts. In some cases, if the strory is popular we will introduce character sign-ups where you can post your own character for a continuation of the short. So..... PLEASE COMMENT!

Sheng Fei [Chap 1 of 7]

Daniel was bored. Class had finished for the day and he had nothing to do. He ran a hand through his spiky black hair before looseing his tie. It was a warm day with little breeze and Daniel was feeling the heat. He was good looking, tall with fierce brown eyes.

On the outside, he appeared to be just a normal high school student but in reality, he was a cold and ruthless genius and former military tactician, though none of his friends knew about that. He had quit that job, the politics and corruption disgusted him.

Now he was just looking to finish his studies and go to a good university, providing the Chinese let him. The Chinese pissed him off even more than the leaders of Balamb. Thinking they can just stroll in and do whatever the heck they want. It was the fault of Malcolm Brunt, the man who had replaced him as tactician. Incompetent idiot, thought Daniel.

He was completly not concentrating on where he was walking, and walked into a group of mildly drunk Chinese soldiers. One of them cursed loudly.

" You bline stupih?!" he shouted, in broken English. Daniel cursed. This wasn't good. He had heard rumours of how Chinese soldiers took great pleasure in oppressing their fallen enemies. However, the heat had already annoyed him and left him impatient and frustrated.

" You shouldn't be drinking during the day, you stupid smug prick," he said to the soldier, in French. Nodding his head in apparent apology, he began to move past the soldiers.

" Halt!" called a sober looking one. He was dressed differently to the others, signalling that he was probably their superior. Upon seeing the man, the soldiers' eyes widened.

" Master Sheng Fei!" they said, bowing. They spoke Chinese but Daniel understood them anyway, since he was fluent in the language. Daniel froze. Sheng Fei was the name of the legendary military leader who was the brains behind the invasion. What was worse, they had fought each other once before when China had attempted to capture some Balamb land.

" Boy! You are in your late teens right?" asked Sheng Fei, looking at Daniel, speaking perfect english.

" Yes sir, I'm 18" answered Daniel. Sheng Fei frowned.

" Why did you not fight in the war?" he said. Daniel smiled, Sheng Fei had failed to identify him.

" Well-"

" Sir!" interrupted a young soldier before Daniel could answer.

" Yes?" answered Sheng Fei.

" There's been a breakout, members of the A Squad have escaped!" blurted the young soldier.

Sheng Fei cursed. He gestured to the soldiers.

" Come, we have work to do."

The Chinese exited with Daniel forgotten.

Interesting, mused the teen. Not even A Squad can do anything though, it'll be futile in the end.

What he didn't notice, was the man sitting in the cafe opposite. The man took out his phone and dialled a number.

" Yes?" answered a voice.

" I've located Daniel. Sheng Fei is on the way to investigate,"

" No matter, A Squad has been secured," said the voice on the end of the phone. " Keep observing Daniel. We'll make a move soon."

" Yes sir" answered the man, before ending the call.

Ooooh, intriguing! I wonder who this mysterious stranger is, and what he has in store for Daniel next chapter.

As a writer, I also say kudos. An interesting setup that kind of reminds me of Ender's Game. It sounds like it has lots of room to develop and evolve into what I'm sure will be a very interesting story. Prose could use a bit of cleaning up, but still good work.

Danger [Chap 2 of 7]

Sheng Fei wasn't happy. Not because of the fact that A Squad escaped, that situation was nowhere near big enough to pose a threat, no, he was bothered by the young man he had encountered earlier. There was something about him. Something familiar. He took a sip of the glass of wine he had in his hand. It was probably nothing but he didn't like feeling unsure. There was a knock at the door of his office. He had taken the office from the Balamb tactician, a fool of a man who hadn't worried Sheng Fei in the slightest. It was a nice office though, large, spacious, clean and tidy. A huge flatscreen T.V was directly opposite the desk with a feed of CNN playing on mute. There was a vast number of books, stacked onto four shelves, mostly containing information on the history of Balamb.

" Come in!" he called, in Chinese. A soldier entered, saluting.

" Sir! The Chinese Embassy was attacked!" blurted the soldier. Sheng Fei raised an eyebrow in reply.

" So? We own the whole of Balamb, the third largest country in the world. The Embassy is useless, an abandoned building," he said, calmly.

" But sir! It could've been the A Squad," said the soldier.

" Again, so what? It doesn't matter how could they are, we will crush them easily. If you have nothing more to say, leave me," replied Sheng Fei.

The soldier tensed, he was hesitating and Sheng Fei was irked.

" Spit it out boy!" he roared, causing the soldier to jump.

" S-Sir! Captain Cheng ordered that a large number of our weapons be stored there." mumbled the soldier. Sheng Fei frowned, he was getting a bad feeling.

" Which weapons? he asked.

" Well um, you see-" stammered the soldier.

" WHICH WEAPONS?!" bellowed Sheng Fei. The soldier cast his eyes downwards.

" 40% of the weapons used to take over the country. About 20 Tomahawk missles, countless firearms and ammo, tons of various grenades, 6 machine gun turrets and 3 Gen Shin cannons."

Sheng Fei gasped. The Gen Shin Cannon was a unique high magnetic energy cannon that was the only one of its kind in the world and, as far as he knew, it was unique to China. It had 20 times the power of the explosives used in the world wars, and though it wasnt as strong as a nuclear weapon, it was much easier to control and you could use it any number of times providing it was charged. He took a deep breath before speaking.

" Call Cheng, Mui, and Lei to my office at once," he waved the soldier away dismissively. The soldier bowed and began to leave, but stopped at the last second.

" Sir, the Captain also told me to give you this note." said the soldier. He handed Sheng Fei the note, before exiting the room.

Sheng Fei opened the note, and his blood ran cold upon reading it's contents.

PROJECT I MAN IN DANGER OF BEING FOUND OUT. PROTO STORED IN EMBASSY.

Sheng Fei composed himself, before picking up his phone and dialling a number. He would need his best men for this.

Daniel exited his house and locked the door. He needed some food and didn't feel like cooking. He turned into a narrow alleyway but despite the late hour, he wasn't too worried. That was his big mistake. A figure appeared in front of him, stepping out of the shadows.

" Come with me," it said. Daniel was surprised. It had the voice of a woman and the Chinese didn't allow women to join the army. Who did this person belong to then?

" Who sent you here?" asked Daniel. The woman seemed to hesitate, but she was wearing a face mask so he wasn't sure.

" The Chines-" she began.

"Please, don't treat me like a fool. You are a woman, your chinese is a giveaway and I'm not stupid. Your command of the language may be good but you have a western accent." sighed Daniel.

" They told me you were clever, now come with me," said the woman, switching to english.

" I don't think so," replied Daniel, calmly. In response, the woman pointed a gun at him.

" Come now," she ordered.

Daniel smiled slightly, before dropping his head in apparent defeat. The woman took the bait and lunged forward. Daniel quickly sidestepped before throwing a right jab at her face. He caught his assailant by surprise and she reeled back. Daniel pressed home the advantage, quickly ending the short fight by sweeping away the woman's legs and pinning her down with his body. She dropped the gun and it bounced out of reach.

" Now, tell me who sent you," growled Daniel. He yanked off her mask and gasped.

" Hello again sir," grinned the now unmasked woman.

" Jennifer! But why-" Daniel stopped talking as he felt a gun press into the back of his head.

" Now, come with us," whispered a male voice from behind him. As Daniel began to turn around to see the man, he was hit on the back of the head with the butt of the gun. The last thing he saw was Jennifer's face, before he blacked out.

Interesting. Looks like things are starting to happen. I'm excited to see more.

That said, I must admit, I kind of lol'd when I read that the cannon was the only one of it's kind in the world, despite there being (at least) three of them. Not really an error, and I understand what you meant, but it felt a bit contradictory when I first read it. Might change it to something like "the technology was unimitated throughout the world." ^.^
