Manifesto
When I upload(or use url) the quality of the avatar becomes bad ...how do I avoid that ? what format should I save my avatars as?
Renzourin
try png or bmp and make sure that the avatar fits the specifications exactly when the forum has to shrink or enlarge the picture it distorts it
Koby
None of my avatars have ever changed quality.
AaronScythe
You can save it in any number of formats, just try to avoid jpg (its a compression method so it will degrade quality) and gif (it drops out certain colors on some pictures)bmp in general is old hat and you shouldnt waste time with it, go PNG all the way for quality preservation. (Bmp holds quality for bitmap images only, PNG holds it for either bitmap OR vector - and theres a growing number of vector images available for use as avatars and the like)

†Shazi
jpg kills the quality of your avatars, in fact, the last time i used jpg was when what i was using didn't support png.... which was AGES ago
throwaway319fg
I'd save it as png, and crop or resize the photo to a reasonable size. There is a certain dimension or file size that you can refer to if you want your avatar to look as neat as possible. Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 40.0 KB (whichever is smaller).
ウェン゠Leki
I always use PNG. Jpeg messes up when you upload and gives you white backgrounds.
Koby
I always use PNG. Jpeg messes up when you upload and gives you white backgrounds.Only if there is transparency as only gif and png support transparency.I use jpg often because it DOES support high quality despite the popular belief and for a fraction of the filesize that png calls for. I only save in png when the situation calls for it on rare occasions or if I absolutely don't want quality loss or if the filesize will stay small.I do not want 2 MB PNG banners.. lol.. So I save with JPG and they can be 200 KB.

Koby
Here is an avatar from that image if you'd prefer it over just the image being shrunk. I've added some sharpening and some lighting. As well as cropped it to make the height and width the same and added your username.
