Dsl modem problem

I have a Dsl modem(6350-A4-200 model) this one is really old. My problem is that the modem is not connecting to my computer. My computer said the modem was initializing to my computer ,then it cut off on me. The modem kept doing this on my computer and then the modem's ethernet light turn off on me. I plug in everything correctly but the modem still kept doing this.

this happened to me but it turned out my dad had forgot to pay the internet bill lol

so thats all i can think of, sorry

either Part of it is fried or you need to have them come out and look at "Their Equipment" cause it could be the wire is bad too.... never know

@ RazorDan my dad still pays the internet. Thanks though. I might fix the modem myself.

well it has nothing to do with paying the internet bill lol. I can tell you the light is just an indication that the modem has conductivity with the ethernet cable.. try a different Ethernet cable 1st if that doesn't work then your modem is probably in bad shape. If it is old as you say replace it time for upgrade anyways..

did you check in the back at the terminals of the modem in your ethernet section? (the brass looking metal stripes which you should see 8 prones of) if one is missing that could be your problem if it isn't then you have an internal problem and should just replace rather than too repair it.

If you have tried a different ethernet cable and it is still not connecting you can also try pinging it to see if any packets are getting through. You can do this by opening Command Prompt and typing "ping ###.###.#.#" without the quotes and replacing the #s with the IP address on the bottom of your modem. Typing "ipconfig" or "ipconfig /renew" are other options you can try. IPconfig will show you your current network settings like IP address, subnet mask and default gateway and the /renew resets your network adapters. If none of these have helped, you can also try resetting the modem itself. There should be a small button on the back probably something that would require a pen or something similar to push in. Just make sure you have any passwords/user name information written down first, because I know my modem requires these to connect and they have never been saved when I did a reset.

Hope this can help.

I did everything you said but it still doesn't work. The modem was trying to connect then it shut off and did it again. The modem ethernet light turn completely off on me.

This part of what your talking about L4ugh is just having to do with the DSL & Internet light indicators not the ethernet light..

socom_hunter if you are still trying to solve this issue, I'll try to offer more help then I did in my last post. That post was basically meant verify there is a problem and then offer a rather half ass solution to it. I will admit that I'm not a professional of computers by any means, but I would like to say that I atleast know enough to offer something more then buy a new modem. In the networking class I took, like some 8 years ago, I learned to take problems like this in steps. Step one verify the problem, step two isolate the problem, step three troubleshoot problem, and step four solve problem. My original post really did nothing more then verify that your computer isn't actually talking to you modem. From the "My computer said the modem was initializing to my computer" quote, I assumed that you were using some kind of quick installation wizard to install the modem. If this is wrong and you still want my help with this, please try to explain how you are trying to initialize the modem.

As far as my above post goes, the ping command does have to do with ethernet because it is used to check the connection to your modem over said ethernet connection. All that really does is just verify there is an issue. The ipconfig which does what I explained in the first post, will tell you if you have an IP address already. This can help because if your computer has an address that is conflicting with the modem IP address they will not be able to communicate. A conflict of addresses would be both the PC and modem having the same address or the two having addresses that aren't compatible like a modem address of 192.186.1.1 and a pc address of 191.168.2.2.

If you are using a quick install program to install the modem you may just need to install it manually by entering the IP address on the bottom of your modem into your web browser and inputting the required info. If you still have documentation on the modem, then it should have a manual with "how to" instructions for manually installing your modem. If not, you can try going to the modem manufacturer's website and see if they have a pdf version you can download.

I wouldn't just go out and buy a new modem though, because there wasn't anything that a read in the original post that isolated the problem to the modem itself. If you still want my help you can also PM me and I'll try to help that way. If you think I just need to go take a ride on the short bus then just tell me to fck ff and I'll wash my hands of this, but I really don't see the need to spend money on a new modem until you have atleast isolated the problem to it.

Hmm.....see their, are two lights with the Ethernet post, which one goes out, or both goes out ?

And, problems also arise, when Ethernet ic on motherboards dies, that might the problem.

P.S. Some modem have inbuilt router capabilities that may create ip conflicts, but this one is too old for that.
