Anime's fanservice, necessary?

For me this is the biggest problem of the animu nowadays.

Why? Now the studios are focused on selling, and what sells? The fanservice. I do not why, but actually the people (in japan, of course) prefer those things instead of good plots.

That's the reason of animus like HSOTD and K-On (this is moe, another cáncer) are popular at ridiculous levels. No offense for them fans.

So, what do you think about this?

P.S.: I'm studiying english, so, if i did some mistakes, please tell me. I'm Latin American.

Hey, I like Fanservice as much as the next guy but i gotta agree sometimes they take it to ridiculous levels.

Highschool of the Dead is a good example of Fanservice gone waaay out of control but K-ON is pretty much on a decent level on Fanservice.

The problem with this is that they focus so much on the butt and boob shots that even in the more serious parts of the story, you can't help but think "what a bunch of bull ..."

hopefully, they'll be able to find the right balance of fanservice sometime soon ohterwise they might as well start airing hentai on TV

well...I don't really mind copious amounts of fan service because I like to masturbate to animated pictures of scantily clad school girls. Now, that piece of sarcasm aside, my real opinion of Fanservice, if it's there, I won't complain, if it's there in large amounts I still won't complain. You see, I'm not really that picky when it comes to anime, I'll watch almost anything, for instance, to me a great meaningful story and character development isn't that important, if I cared about those things that much I'd read a novel, but if they're there anyway, I'll consider it an added bonus, same with fanservice, no point in being picky and complaining about it really, just enjoy it, though I'll admit I do enjoy it a bit more than the average person, but that's my opinion which hopefully made sense.

P.s that was actually some pretty good english you got there.

fanservice isnt neccesary at all. i dont mind it but i do think that the amount of fanservice in animes is increasing. hotd had huge potential but those middle eps with so much fanservice ruined it for me. dont know about you guys but i enjoyed k-on. it was a decent anime. no fanservice and just a lot of fun. for me, fanservice is getting old and predictable, i mean its used in the same way in most animes! however like i said, i dont mind it but i can get why people are so pissed over it.

@ idl12

that was some awesome post there man! lols

as for the topic Fanservice, i kinda like it in most of the animes that i had watch. but it depends on the mood of the story itself. fanservice is a good way to make a comic relief out of a very hard and serious episode. like this example:

One Piece episode 409 - it's a family jewel!

i also like animes with too much ecchi stuff but still not in way to make the audience to be much more perversive. (too bad there is an approved bill about this kind of animes)

I just won't watch anime that has too much fanservice. There are plenty of sane animes out there to watch so you can't blame anime itself.

I still ended up watching HOTD and worst of all, Seikon No Qwaser.

Freezing falls into the same category as HOTD if you ask me. The you have that new Oniichan....... whatever but the difference is that the ecchiness is the plotline so it passes for me.

Fan Service? How should I put it, it makes animes MORE INTERESTING and keeps the viewers on watching the series. Personally, I don't despise it but anything that is excessive is bad. Therefore, excessive fan service, I don't like it. But a decent amount is always welcome! The only problem is, a person's criteria for judging whether an anime has excessive or decent fan service.

Fanservice is good but only in some instise i for one thought that Highschool of the Dead had just the right amount of FS to gore and it has a strong story to help it to but when FS is all you have to offer then ie. eiken the manga was good granted there was still a lot of FS but it at least had a story to tell and FS has become a part of anime culture

OMG its because all these Fanservice that kept me from watching all these new anime. Plus all the new anime is about girls and big boobs. I mean im not saying i don't like big boobs or anything but they are annoying when trying to watch a serious anime and then your friend come over and see u watching it and they think its porn or some crap...

Necessary? Well of course it's not necessary. The cushions on your couch aren't necessary. But, they enhance your couch sitting experience and make you a lot more comfortable.

Particular animes know who their audience is, and how they can appeal to them. Shows like HSOTD and K-On aren't trying to be some bastions of art and epitomes of storytelling. They are both based on manga aimed at young men who like boobies. Everyone likes boobies. I wouldn't say the fanservice ruins anything in the anime. You grow accustomed to it and should go in expecting it with certain shows.

Fan service isn't just ecchi or moe, either. Those gratuitously long Gundam transformation sequences and outrageously over-the-top, planet destroying attack scenes from Dragon Ball Z are also fan service of a different kind. Animes just want to appeal to the market.

No it's not necessary. But I don't mind it, and sometimes it's even good depending on the situation or if that is what I feel like watching. I mean I'm a man so I'm not gonna deny enjoying it from time to time.

Anyway, everyone watches shows for a reason. Some people watch to see huge tits. Some watch for an intricate plot. Others watch for action, and so on. Just because YOU don't like a specific genre or theme type does not mean it's bad or should be banished so to speak. I'm not a fan of mystery. So, should I complain about mystery anime being made or the use of it as a sub-genre in other anime I like? No, that's silly. When you start a series you should check it's genre and theme types before you watch it. If you don't like fanservice THAT much then don't watch shows with fanservice in it. It's as simple as that. If you can't find shows without fanservice you are not looking hard enough. There are a lot of good shows out there waiting to be watched.

I dont mind, and i welcome it if the plot gets too boring. Maybe producers put fan service into anime more now, since they get to put more steam and leaves and bats and do creative censorship into the tv version and make people buy their dvds just to get a glimpse of the bouncy stuff in all their glory on dvd.

Its just another trick to sell the dvds and other merchandise.

Fan service can be funny, and even if its overboard, if it's tastefully done, I don't mind it. Certain animes take it a bit too far, in my opinion. I just finished watching HOTD, for instance, and while the fan service in that was hilarious sometimes, in several episodes it was at the expense of story and plot development, and just way over the top.

My first experience with fan service was in Neon Genesis, back in the day when it first came out. Only, that fan service was usually effed up. Especially in the Death and Rebirth movie. Also, when I was a teenager, I thought the big boobs were awesome (duh, I was a hormonal teenager), but when I became an adult, I started to want shows that reflected more real to life women, who are more than big breasts. I worry sometimes now, in my dotage, that this emphasis on the chest is at the expensive of the personalities of real women. We need to see women as more than legs or boobs, and part of that begins with how we portray them in fiction. Oh well...
