Riku-kun
I couldn't find any topic like this...If there is then well...whatever...I'm a vocalist on a Punk Rock garage band called Unprettier. Most of my life I was into Hip-Hop. Most Portuguese teenagers and children are. We grow up that way. That's all I listened to, sometimes even badmouthing Heavy Metal/Death Metal/Black Metal (so on and so forth) bands for the excessive roaring. I met a skater girl who's sleeping lullabies included Dimu Borgir and Children of Bodom. Eventually me and her became boyfriend and girlfriend and she basically changed my life, making me have a U turn ragarding music. After a while I started to let my hair grow down to have it em style and started to wear mainly black and white clothing, made a lip piercing and started painting my nails black and wearing my eyeliner. Eventually I met up a guy through a friend, and by telling him I wanted to be in a band he asked me to go with him to try out my skills. I couldn't play anything, but my voice suited punk rock, and the Hip-Hop culture I had made it complete. I stayed, and still am today. When we go to places where the local bands meet, people usualy know me from either the street or any local school and call me "Little Piece of Rap-Sh*t" simply because I used to be on a totally different wave.Thing is, Portugal is a very small country, and rock bands don't usually make it, so the competition gets pretty rough between garage bands....But descrimination?Take the 50Cent getting bottled at Reading. (ok...I admit...that was sweet) It was just wrong. What's your opinion on the matter? You think someone who has litened to Hip-Hop all their life does not deserve to be in a Rock band? Because that's the way some particular people make me feel sometimes.
† Emotional Outlet
I'm not really sure I understand what the topic is, so pardon me if I'm going on about the wrong thing.De gustibus non est disputandum.I don't think taste in music is worth hating people for. It may cause some conflict if you're riding in the same car and can't decide what station to turn the radio to, or which CD to pop in, but it's an extremely petty reason to actually justify hating anyone. If 50 Cent decided that he was better suited for heavy metal, more power to the guy if he doesn't suck at it. =P
tiddybear
I always thought it was ridiculous how people separated themselves by what music they listened to. In my high school, it was similar. The people who listened to rock had something against those who listened to rap and the other way around. I tried to avoid doing that, but most of my friends listened to rock and so I earned the dislike of anyone who listened to rap just because of that. I agree with EO. =/
Koby
Considering I like alot of different kinds of music, I have no discrimination personally. I like Hip-Hop, Rap, Rock, Pop, Country, Alternative, and more. Though I have noticed how people tend to hang around with only those who listen to the same kind of music mostly. There was always wars going on at my high school between rap and rock music lovers. My dad for instance is a red neck idiot, who says he likes music but he is so biased he only listens to country and hates everything else period. I on the other hand is the complete opposite of him so we never get along or do anything. I grew up in the city, etc.. so everything was different. =P I always tell him you can't particularly like music unless you can say you listen to more then one genre, other wise you can just say you like that genre. The Welsh Paddy
Well, I'm into most kinds of music, as are quite a few of my friends. Most of us wanting to be accomplished musicians, you'd have to have a wide taste in music, really. While we may not like certain styles, we take the time to listen to them and see what's good and bad about it. However, as for discrimination towards musicians, I think it's wrong. But if you only play a certain style of music, then you gotta be careful where you gig and all. Take Reading for example, a city in the UK. It's a place where most of the youths are metal heads, and you get music festivals there yearly. And these are the type who like nothing but metal. 50 Cent played there, much to the distaste of the people who went there, so he got bottled off, by practically half the crowd, which was huge. Fair play to the guy, though, he carried on for a good while, but went off after twenty minutes of it.Panic! At the Disco played there, and they got bottled, and they ran off straight away.In the UK, we also have this yearly 'Download Festival', which is a music festival, again, for metal heads. This year, My Chemical Romance were headlining the festival. I thought that was a bit stupid and had suspicions that they'd be bottled off. And guess what? They where. While I think this is wrong, I think those cases were a hard-learned lesson. While those bands may be liked elsewhere, if you go and play emo pop/rock, or rap/hip-hop in a place where people expect to hear Metal, prepare to get lots of abuse from the crowd. Kyo
i'll listen to anything once. i love hip hop, rap, rock, metal, techno, you name it. i judge by track not genre. and most artists can produce at least one song i like. my appearance would suggest rocker/metal head/ goth whatever. point is where there is conflict in interest there will be abuse. this goes on everywhere not just in music. discrimination as a whole is petty, not just in the music industry. picking on someone for being a metal head or a hip hopper is as bad as the white kid pickin on the black kid, or vice versa for that matter. † Koga
I like all kinds of music but there quite a few things that annoy me even if I like the genre. For example...rap. Why they hell do a lot of them rap about what they got? Who cares? What? Should I rap on how I got a PS3? Should I rap about what I do with my computer component? Yea, sure..I'm fin to spit some rhymes. v_v"Yea..uh...yo.yo...I PUT THE USB CORD THROUGH THE MOTHA (BLEEP)IN JACK! THEN TAKE SOME HARDWARE (BLEEP) OUT THE MY NI**A'S (BLEEP)IN PACK!!!!!"See, made no damn sense. Do yaw really care that I plugged in a USB Cord? Really, rap about something different. I mean, why do some rap about teh samething? That get on my nerves. And Mike Jones? Why the hell does he have to he have to sat his name every time everytime he's on teh song. "CHYEAH! MIKE JOOOONES!" STFU! Rock? How do they rock their heads like that. I did that for like 5 secs and had s headache. lol..I'm just ranting away. Yea, I'm in a bad mood right now. AaronScythe
You do deserve a little hostility due to your turnabout, after badmouthing one side of things. But that being said, you really have to look at the crowds each draws. They all have the good, and they all have the bad.For me, I listen to mainly metal, have long blonde hair, and own a tripp jacket (ankle length)I have hung out with those from a few different crowds, and can tell you this much.In general:Those who profess love of rap, are striving to be more creative, and often have attention problems, yet are usually docile. Those who profess love of metal, are usually nicer than given credit for, and enjoy their alcoholThose who profess love for punk, are the most gentle people of all - and will only fight for what they believe is right. But those are the mainstays of what you consider for just music.Go to how they style themselves, its the same, exceptThose who are "gangster" are usually over agressive, wanting to be top dog. Those who are "emo" are usually just doing it for the attentionThere are of course exceptions all the time, but thats the way things work.Personally, I love going to metal clubs, where everyone has a good drink, and there are never any fights.I cant say the same for the others however. (Except for raves, which have a close to the same vibe - everyone there for fun nothing else)
