I read this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/install-windows-7-on-emachine-el1200/b7fd6167-8f1e-40b1-a252-c2e4069448e5

It seems to suggest Windows 7 will work albeit with slight issues about the Aero theme and the GFX card. Though someone stated that there were updated drivers that fixed that or something. Although that is about about a slightly different version as it states 06w instead of 05w. However the parts they mentioned seemed to be the same specs.

Windows XP is pretty much near the end of it's lifespan. A lot of things coming out no longer will work for it or support it. I've got other computers with Windows Vista or Windows 7, but this particular PC (which happens to be my weakest) is the main one I use for internet usage and I figured I should update it if possible to take advantage of newer things.

I'm curious though as to if Windows 7 will run as well as XP on this weak of a computer or if I'd be better off leaving it with just XP. I know 7 uses a bit more resources and I don't want the OS bogging the PC down too much. Do you think I'd likely experience more freezes and such?

I'd stick with XP if you intend to actually buy the new copy of windows. That old of a computer isn't really worth spending anymore money on. Just run it into the ground and move on, maybe after a short prayer.

I would probably pick 7 over vista, but that's my bias opinion. I use to run the beta on my EEEPC 1000HE, and I was able to use aero on it. It wasn't the fastest thing in the world, but it really wasn't any faster when XP was on it. Some of your hardware might not be supported during installation, but a hardware update should be offered afterwards. Hopefully you won't have to dl a nic driver to get it to connect like I did. If 2 GB is your total max ram, then you'll probably have the same speed issues I did. I'm not sure if 2 GB would even do much good on vista.

If you really want to get the best out of that old hardware though, I'd try a linux distro. I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but windows would be bloat for something you just use for surfing the net.

  • 4 weeks later...

Why not try out  a couple of GNU/Linux distros running of a usb stick. Porteus runs from ram and is fast as stink. Same applies to Slacko a very nice pup. Or for a hd install Kanotix is a good choice.

All three are user friendly with pretty good community support and helpful wikis.Spend half an hour at the Porteus site reading up on its use, stick it on a stick and use it. You'll forget all about microwat in a very short time.
