Koby
http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/emachines-el1200-05w/4507-3118_7-33399101.html I've added an extra 1GB of RAM. So it's got 2GB total. Though someone stated that there were updated drivers that fixed that or something. Although that is about about a slightly different version as it states 06w instead of 05w. However the parts they mentioned seemed to be the same specs. Windows XP is pretty much near the end of it's lifespan. A lot of things coming out no longer will work for it or support it. I've got other computers with Windows Vista or Windows 7, but this particular PC (which happens to be my weakest) is the main one I use for internet usage and I figured I should update it if possible to take advantage of newer things. I'm curious though as to if Windows 7 will run as well as XP on this weak of a computer or if I'd be better off leaving it with just XP. I know 7 uses a bit more resources and I don't want the OS bogging the PC down too much. Do you think I'd likely experience more freezes and such? † L4ugh
I'd stick with XP if you intend to actually buy the new copy of windows. That old of a computer isn't really worth spending anymore money on. Just run it into the ground and move on, maybe after a short prayer. I would probably pick 7 over vista, but that's my bias opinion. I use to run the beta on my EEEPC 1000HE, and I was able to use aero on it. It wasn't the fastest thing in the world, but it really wasn't any faster when XP was on it. Some of your hardware might not be supported during installation, but a hardware update should be offered afterwards. Hopefully you won't have to dl a nic driver to get it to connect like I did. If 2 GB is your total max ram, then you'll probably have the same speed issues I did. I'm not sure if 2 GB would even do much good on vista. If you really want to get the best out of that old hardware though, I'd try a linux distro. I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but windows would be bloat for something you just use for surfing the net.
GeekyAlex
Stick with XP, even if Microsoft is ending support in 2014. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP Edited April 14, 2013 by GeekyAlex
Jªvª
Well 7 should run fine, but anything additional like gaming and etc I def stay away. Vista I would stay away due to its huge memory consumption. XP or Linux would probably be best for this rig Edited April 14, 2013 by Jªvª
GeekyAlex
You could also do Linux. With WINE 1.5 being pretty stable, more and more Windows programs will run under it. You could try Linux Mint, as some forum posts on other forums say some people run it on 1GHz processors and it goes pretty fast.
Dae314
If you're just using it to surf the internet, I also support getting some type of Linux on it. Edited April 14, 2013 by Dae314
shadowtheman
Win7 32 bit should fit just fine. Never ever use vista on anyting with 2gigs of mem or less. Heck never use vista at all.
abarbarian
Why not try out a couple of GNU/Linux distros running of a usb stick. Porteus runs from ram and is fast as stink. Same applies to Slacko a very nice pup. Or for a hd install Kanotix is a good choice. All three are user friendly with pretty good community support and helpful wikis.Spend half an hour at the Porteus site reading up on its use, stick it on a stick and use it. You'll forget all about microwat in a very short time. http://www.porteus.org/ http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puppy53 http://www.kanotix.com/changelang-eng.html Edited May 13, 2013 by abarbarian
