Science Experiment

The No-sleep experiment

I've got some spare time since it's the holidays, so I am going to make a science experiment (or more, if I have nothing to do).

Goals:

1. Know how much time I can stay awake.

2. Note the symptoms of sleep deprivation.

Starting tomorrow (January 5th 2012) I will note the time I woke up and I will make a text log that I will partially post here during the experiment (not every hours because it would be full of the same things). The complete log will be posted at the end. Since I want the "exact time" i will fall asleep (and maybe because I'm stupid) I will create a small program that will log what i do at every hour or so, and if my computer goes to sleep, it will know it (I'm not sure if I will be able to do that last part). That way, if my computer is asleep, I will need to give a reason why. I will also note the time I wake up the next day.

I know there may be health problems related to this (I don't really care), but I won't try to beat the world record (11 days). I will not push it too far.

Expectations:

- I will stay awake for 48 hours or more.

- I will probably have hallucinations (No big deal, I even have some when I'm awake sometimes)

- I will probably sleep for more than 12 hours after the experiment

Details (May be updated):

- All times are Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5:00)

Edits to first post:

- started

- Stopped

Started

If you have any comments, suggestions or if you want more details, feel free to say it.

This is a terrible idea personally. This has lots of bad side effects. Let me list a few copied from wikipedia

Generally, sleep deprivation may result in:[6][7]

aching muscles[8]

confusion, memory lapses or loss[9][10]

depression[9]

hallucinations[9]

hand tremors[11]

headaches

malaise

sensitivity to cold

bloodshot eyes

periorbital puffiness, commonly known as "bags under eyes" or eye bags

increased blood pressure[12][13]

increased stress hormone levels[13]

increased risk of diabetes[13]

increased risk of fibromyalgia[14]

irritability[6]

nystagmus[disambiguation needed ] (rapid involuntary rhythmic eye movement)[15]

obesity[13]

temper tantrums in children[6]

yawning[6]

symptoms similar to:

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)[6]

Psychosis[16]

Basically, you will start to shut down and eventually you will begin to have microlapses, where you will fall asleep for split seconds. that is your brain telling you to sleep or else really bad stuff might happen. So enjoy catching up on your gaming or anime though :P I wish you luck

Wrong, this list is the one from sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is when you do not sleep enough everyday, or a couple of days, but you sleep a little bit. Symptoms could be similar or not, and I said I'm not going to push it too far.

thanks for the warning tough.

wishing you good luck on you experiment

recently i stayed awake for 1 and a half days (exam time) didn't like the experience.

symptoms include

headache for sure

acidity

double to triple vision

restlessness (actually you will feel like you can wage war on the whole world and win "initially atleast i.e., some 20hrs later")

continuous yawning

body pains especially neck and shoulders

walking like you are drunk

short tempered

lol I went for 36 and realized that it began to lose it's thrill, all nighters are still fun but after about the 26 hour mark my thinking becomes completely derailed where I can't focus on one thing too long or I begin to fall asleep, everything begins to seem too boring to do, I hear things that didn't make any noise and I don't hear what other people are saying half the time. If i'm too tired to enjoy things, i just go asleep. Anyways good luck staying up so long, i know I can't.

I did that before (not the longest possible but).

On my birthday 2 years ago, I tried staying up all day and all night, I think i did 36 hours or so.

And last summer I had 2 jobs and one of them had night shifts sometimes and I stayed up for like 26 - 30 hours.

Now back to programming that stupid application.

Lol longest I ever stayed up was for 4 days straight, but I did have a lot of energy drinks, after that I felt shit and went to sleep. Woke up the next day still feeling worse as ever and it lasted for a few days, my sleeping order was all screwed up and it took me a few weeks before the effects of caffeine wear off.

I don't drink energy drinks and I don't plan to. As for my sleep order, it's screwed up since the beginning of the holidays, lol.

Update: I am now alone in the house, my brother went to play hockey and to get some food. Since I plan to make other experiments I'll probably need to build things (maybe). So I said that "We're gonna need a blowtorch, and some more peanut butter". (Bonus points if you can identify the TV Show of that quote)

My parents just arrived to this house (We have 2) and didn't bring peanut butter! Now I'm screwed, it's the only thing i said to my brother: "Bring back some peanut butter". I also told my mom I was doing this experiment (she didn't know) and she told me: "No you are going to sleep tonight". I responded: "too late the experiment has started".

The No-sleep experiment

Status: Ended

The Experiment Ended at: [ 1/6/2012 ] 5:50:38 PM

I fell asleep at: [ 1/6/2012 ] 9:59:34 AM

Total Time without sleep: 24:50

Goals:

1. Know how much time I can stay awake.

2. Note the symptoms of sleep deprivation.

Results:

1. 24:50. This is not my personal best, I was able to stay awake for 36 hours during summer.

2. Symptoms I experienced:

- Yawning.

- Eyes Itching.

- Cold Feet and hands.

- Irritability.

- Headache (small, when i woke up).

- Sweating (I don't no if this has anything to do with not sleeping but I felt hot when I woke up)

- Periorbital puffiness, commonly known as "bags under eyes" or eye bags

The phone woke me up just now.

Ending experiment

No Sleep Time: 24:50

[ 1/6/2012 ] 5:50:38 PM | Experiment Stopped

[ 1/6/2012 ] 5:50:44 PM | Program closed

Conclusion

I did not stay awake until I passed out, I was so exhausted and angry at myself for trying this experiment that I went to sleep only 24 hours later.

All of my expectations did not happen, I didn't stay awake for more than 48 hours, I didn't have hallucinations. I only slept for 7 hours after the experiment, but that is due to the phone which rang for long before I answered it because I thought I wasn't alone in the house. Before going to sleep I was angry and very cold, some of the symptoms copied from wikipedia by lemmingllama were true. From now on, until the end of the holidays, I will go to sleep whenever I feel a bit tired and will see how this works out.

Please send me more science experiment ideas by private messaging, preferably none that put my body to the test.
