livereflection
How do you guys feel about pay to play MMOS like WOW, EVE, or FF14? Been wanting to play WOW and FF14 for a while (my friends tell me I'm not gonna have a life if i start WOW though). Can't rly justify paying 13 or so bucks a month too play one game though. Already pay for XBL but thats only about 5-6 bucks a month and it's not just for one game. Anyone play pay 2 play games? Worth it?
Koby
I refuse to pay any sort of subscription to play games. Especially since they already charge you for buying the game in the first place. If they want a subscription they should give you the actual game for free, lol.Anyhow if I want to play an MMO I play free ones or on private servers. Speaking of which I was recently told of a new WoW private server where you can play for free.
lemmingllama
Paying to Play is a huge scam. If you pay 60 odd dollars just to have the game, you shouldnt pay another 15 a month just to continue playing it. Plus the fact that most pay to play games arent worth playing for more than four months unless you want to become addicted. As a side note, private servers have existed for many pay to play things. WoW has had them for years, you just need to know where to look for them
mitsuhashi
Subscription-based service is OK if you're going to put in many many hours every month, since you can justify the cost as 2 visits to the moviees.Pay-2-play-adverse gamers should look into Guild Wars if you haven't already. Kasoivc
If It's a subscription service like Xbox, Hulu, or Netflix. My reasons are justified simply because of it being price-worthy. Now all of us have a different opinion of what is price worthy considering the fact that we all have different values/opinions and financial situations.I pay $30 a year for Xbox live whenever the Fall Season comes around because of Black Friday and Christmas Deals. Money saved. $30 to play online, shrugs. It's only $30, I'm not being held at gunpoint to hand over $200 just to play my video games or talk to my friends while I play them.My family pays for cable and I've excluded myself from the bill by telling them that I don't watch television enough to justify paying for it. If one can't afford $30 for a yearlong service, something has got to be done about their financial situation.Internet Bills alone for one month are easily over $30, I can live on maybe a minimum of $20 a week of food. And alas, many of us have cellular devices, easily $50 right there on the spot per month for the wireless service. Bam, so don't give me the "I don't have the money for it" Bs . It's just poor budget management imho when someone complains they can't afford a yearly subscription fee to xbox live when they pay for all these other outrageous bills.@Koby's Point, Easiest way to get around paying $60 for a brand new game is to just wait a week or shop around. Mildly used copies crop up everywhere for 10-15$ on games, and if not discounted that much, places like Gamestop offer store discounts of their own on used games/accessories under various programs. The only thing I wouldn't wait around to buy used would simply be EA published games considering the stupid "Online Play Pass" Codes that they've been including in all of their multiplayer-enabled video games because of their greedy mofo' ways of wanting money.Amazon and Toy's R Us are places my brother and I shop around on, we quite often get $10-20 Gift Cards for our next video game purchases, Gift Cards being valid for over a year I believe.Hulu & Netflix, self explanatory considering the ridiculous pricing of cable and satellite television these days.----------------** Now if we're talking about MMORPG's that are P2P; they're are usually not worth my time considering the fact that private servers crop up pretty often. P2P I tend to stave away from, and even Donation/Shop Games I tend to even exempt from ever playing. I used to P2P for international-Ragnarok Online, then I quit. Now it's free, but it's a donation-heavy game; and that's assuming it's not infested with bots everywhere.I will say this though, P2P MMO's - you'll generally meet nice people and form very cool friendships when you get into Guilds/Clans/Alliances just because you meet some cool people, unlike meeting jerks or even unfaithful scammers on a private server. My effort is my effort and if I play an online game, I sure as hell would be pissed if I lost all my progress on a private server, and even more completely drowned in anguish if I were to lose my progress on P2P Server. J-Lord
I can't devote myself to a game to really make it worth paying for it online wise. I do have xbox live but that covers hunderds of games that I can play anytime I want and when I get bored I just swap from one game to another and still have access to XBL, as for MMO games its just not worth it for me, seeing as you have to pay to play online and that just for one game. seirachan
I used to play WoW, but I finally got out of it it's not worth your time or money in the end in my opinion. I've heard the game is also dying since the last expansion. If you want to start up WoW now it's gonna cost you a lot there's 3 expansions you have to buy to progress right and on top of the expansions you got the game itself. I don't even wanna look up the price of that. Would be kinda cool if I could sell my old WoW account... lol If I was caught though it's illegal. I stick to free MMO's and games you buy once and got em for good. There's actually a lot of good free MMO's out there I have a few on my computer right now me and my friends move from games way to much. The free MMO's stay alive because of nice cash shops but I refuse to buy anything limited by time. APB Reloaded(kinda like GTA and Saints Row, I like it.)Vindictus(I LOVE this game It's an action game, you have to do all your own attacks and move the fuck out of the way, you don't just stand there all day swigging a sword in one place like WoW. Mid-evil Fantasy-like)DragonNest(didn't play it very much but really not a bad game Nexon company like Vindictus)DC Universe Online(Super Hero Style game, I really like it)Rusty Hearts(heard it's good never played it)Spiral Knights(I like this game but it's hard to explain it you'd have to look up a youtube video)and Team Fortress 2(Funny Shooter Game)So that's 6 right there and there's tons more then that out there. Kasoivc
Ten years ago, P2P MMO's were the shit, not going to lie. The only game I can think of that people really played a wohle lot without P2P might've been like, Diablo 1&2/Starcraft/Warcraft. And people still play them to this day, asides from the crazy super mods that have been floating around the net."Free2Play" MMO's didn't quite exist then, except for maybe the occasional text-based/brower-based MMORPG, but nobody was really interested in those games. Nowadays (2010+), games are taking the approach towards cash shops and other ways of leeching money from it's players. If people really want it, they'll have money to back their wants and it's a strategic idea because either way, they win. The developer still gets money for their game as a result of hardcore fans and rich nobodies, as well as increasing it's popularity by being "free."P2P MMO's were most likely worth it back in the early 2000's, but it is 2011 now; They're not really worth it anymore. That's why companies went to the drawing board and introduced cash shops.
